In the Coopers' old mansion, Lorie, Roger, and his family were initially angered by Hannah's sarcasm, but they suppressed their resentment. Jane's absence was noted; had she been present, her fury would have been undeniable. However, after her recent humiliation, Jane was confined to the house by Roger.
An awkward silence settled over the room. Miguel, stepping in as peacemaker, quickly interjected, "Let's leave the past behind. Their late arrival stemmed from an incident at Oscar's house. I advised them against rushing back. Thanks to the Wells family's generosity, we received ample bride price without offering a dowry, and now the children have returned with more gifts. They're incredibly kind."
At that moment, the maids entered bearing gifts, surprising Lorie and Roger, who maintained their composure. Lorie smoothly shifted the conversation, saying, "I'm not here to argue. I have something important to discuss."
"Please speak," Miguel replied, his respect for his mother evident. However, Lorie's domineering nature, fueled by Miguel's filial piety, was well-known. In the past, Hannah had unquestioningly obeyed her grandmother, much like her father, but this time, her obedience faltered. She remained impassive, observing her grandmother's next move.
Lorie wasted no time, announcing in a commanding tone, "I've brought Mary here. Mary will be working at Cooper Group tomorrow, replacing Jane. Jane is in no condition to work."
The announcement felt like a verdict. Hannah found the situation absurd; Lorie's assumptions were breathtaking. Aware of Jane's ruined professional and personal life, Lorie was attempting to support Mary. Miguel clearly had reservations about this arrangement, as Jane had worked at the company for over a year and was finally proficient in her role. Replacing her with the inexperienced Mary felt unjust.
"Okay," Hannah said simply.
Miguel was stunned, turning to look at Hannah, expecting a refusal based on her usual dislike for Mary. Lorie and Roger were equally shocked. They had meticulously planned to coerce Hannah or Miguel into accepting their decision, anticipating resistance from one or the other. Hannah's immediate agreement left them disconcerted. Her uncharacteristic behavior fueled their suspicion. They wondered if she was harboring a hidden agenda.
Hannah was fully aware of their thoughts. She chose not to argue with her grandmother, recognizing Lorie's preparedness and the futility of resistance. Allowing Mary into the company would render their objections moot.
"It's inappropriate for Jane to be in the public eye now. Since Mary is willing to help, we shouldn't disappoint her," Hannah stated with dignified generosity. "Dad, wouldn't you agree?"
Miguel nodded. "Yes, since Mary wants to help her sister, we'll support her. You can join your father and brother at the company tomorrow."
"Thank you, Uncle Miguel, and thank you, Hannah," Mary replied, surprised by the ease of her ascension. A subtle smile played on her lips. The thought of replacing Hannah next crossed her mind.
"Jane's job is settled. Uncle Roger, have you considered Jane's future?" Hannah inquired solicitously.
Roger braced himself for another sarcastic remark. Jane's affair with Charles, Hannah's former fiancรฉ, had been a public disgrace.
"Jane will reflect on her actions," Roger replied defensively, his expression embarrassed.
"While I don't believe Jane is solely at fault; it takes two to make such a decision. Charles bears significant responsibility. Uncle Roger, haven't you considered holding him accountable?" Hannah gently reminded him.
Roger, stunned, hadn't considered it. He focused solely on his daughter's shame, overlooking any potential recourse.
"On my wedding day, learning of their affair, my anger was intense. For years, I believed Charles loved only me. My reaction was excessive, fueled by a desire for justice. But now, calmer, I see that if Charles and Jane are in love, why not let it be? Their union would be a compelling story, silencing the gossip." Hannah explained, her words carefully chosen.
Roger, touched but suspicious, remained silent.
"This is also for my own sake. After marrying Oscar, I've faced rumors. Charles and Jane together would bring a happy ending, ending the gossip." Hannah added.
"You always find the best solution." Roger responded, acknowledging the desired outcome while unwilling to admit it.
Hannah ignored his comment. "In fact, I want to thank Jane and Charles. Their relationship led to my marriage with Oscar, revealing true love. My feelings for Charles stemmed from childhood attachment. I sincerely hope we all find happiness."
Her calculated kindness swayed Roger.
