Chapter 925: The Outbreak of War (1)

Three days after Hannah left, Oscar departed for business interviews abroad. The night before his departure, he spent considerable time with Una. His reluctance was evident, not escaping Lillian's notice.

This wasn't a new development. Since confessing his breakup with Hannah, his behavior had changed dramatically. He actively engaged with Lillian, showing genuine interest in her life, even smiling at her. Lillian found herself captivated by his smiles.

Upon seeing her at Una's door, he offered another gentle smile, his smiles always quickening her pulse. Maintaining her composure, she asked, "Are you leaving tomorrow?"

"So I'll miss you two," Oscar replied.

"I'll take good care of Una," Lillian promised.

"Hmm," Oscar nodded. "But the thought of being away for three days makes me uneasy."

His words stirred her, wondering if he suspected something.

"But I trust you," he added, laughing lightly.

His trust felt immense, yet conflicted Lillian. She battled internal doubts, clinging to a fragile hope for their future, a future where they could be together without destroying each other. Silently, she endured her heartache.

He rose from Una's bed and approached her, each step making her heart pound.

"It's late," he said. "Why aren't you sleeping?"

"I can't sleep knowing you're not," she replied.

"You don't want me to go?" A smile played on his lips.

Lillian couldn't resist his charm. She nodded silently. His warm hand gently stroked her hair, her breath shallow as he leaned towards her.

But he stopped, abruptly halting before their lips met. Lillian closed her eyes, her unspoken expectations overwhelming her. She even tilted her chin, anticipating his kiss. After a long pause, she opened her eyes, surprised to find a tender smile and loving gaze.

"Wait for me," he said.

Lillian frowned, her disappointment clear. Her desires ignited, only to be abruptly extinguished.

"I'm leaving early," Oscar said seriously. "I fear you might think me irresponsible." He explained that a shared intimacy tonight would necessitate an immediate departure, potentially upsetting her.

"It doesn't matter," Lillian stated plainly. She knew this was likely their last chance.

"It does matter. It's important," Oscar insisted.

Lillian pursed her lips. She knew his emphasis underscored her importance to him, yet the future remained uncertain.

"Be good," he murmured, his voice soothing. "Go to bed early and wait for me at home."

His gentle words were enchanting. He kissed her forehead. "Remember to think of me."

"Mm-hmm," Lillian nodded.

As she watched him leave, tears blurred her vision. Who could she trustโ€”her father or Oscar? Would Oscar truly remain with her?

Back in his room, the smile vanished. He was a different man. He picked up the phone.

"Theodore."

"Here."

"Are you ready?" Oscar asked coldly.

"Ready as can be."

"Good," Oscar nodded, a cruel glint in his eyes. "Tomorrow, we catch our prey!"

"Understood!"

Oscar hung up. Tomorrow would bring the final reckoning.

The next morning, Oscar departed by car, Lillian watching from behind. She knew her father would act immediately. His supposed business trip was a ruse; Rowan had secretly struck a deal with another country, using Northfield's interests to secure Oscar's assassination upon his arrival.

His entry into the country would be his death sentence. Lillian's eyes welled.

She'd thought her father merely sought to control Oscar, not eliminate him entirely. Yet, this ensured their future security; she couldn't dissuade him.

But what of her hard-won relationship with Oscar? The thought filled her with reluctance.

Lillian stood at the door, her phone vibrating incessantly. She hesitated to warn Oscar, fearing it would endanger her father. The agonizing moment was broken by a ringing phone.

Startled, she answered.

"Father."

"Did he leave?"

"Yes, a few minutes ago."

"Follow our plan, take Una with you. I'll send people to meet you."

"...Alright."

"Listen, Lillian. I know it hurts, but trust me, I do this for our family." Rowan pressed, sensing her hesitation.

"I see."

"I won't say more. You're smart. You know what to do."

"Okay, Father."

Rowan trusted his daughter.

Hanging up, Lillian felt gloomier. She returned to the room, holding Una. Their plan was to take Una, removing her from Oscar's reach and providing a safeguard should their plans fail.

She felt guilty using her daughter. As she prepared to leave, her phone rang again. Hesitantly, she answered.

"Oscar?"
