Chapter 950: Farewell Forever
Lillian picked up the remote, saying to the nearby Winston, "Winston, leave."
She wished only to be buried with Hannah, needing no one else. Winston stared at her, the sincerity of a personal bodyguard sometimes hard to fathom.
"Go!" Lillian shouted, seeing his inaction. Winston's eyes reddened. As a professional, he suppressed tears, but Lillian's request broke through his composure.
Following her command, Winston leaped from the yacht and swam away. Lillian watched his cold, deliberate departure. Hannah remained silent.
"Hannah, aren't you afraid of death?" Lillian asked.
"Everyone fears death."
"Then why are you so calm?"
"I know you won't let me go. Since we're dying anyway, why not enjoy it?"
"Well said," Lillian sneered.
"But do you want to die?" Hannah countered. "Oscar never intended you harm. You can still live, watch Una growโฆ"
"Shut up!" Lillian's agitation flared. "Do you think a few words will sway me? You underestimate me! Since my family's betrayal and Oscar's hurt, I've given up on this world. My life is a tragedy!"
Hannah tried to speak, but Lillian cut her off sharply, "Say nothing more!"
Hannah's lips tightened.
"I haven't pressed the button yet; I'm waiting for Winston to get further away."
"You're not as cruel as you think. You let Una and Winston go."
"That doesn't mean I'll spare you!" Lillian retorted coldly.
Hannah remained silent. Lillian laughed mockingly. "My family is pathetic."
Hannah was bewildered.
"Oscar cared deeply for Una. If my father had used Una to trade for Oscar, he would have won. But he underestimated Oscar, and died by his own hand," Lillian said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
She considered her father's life a miserable, deserved tragedy. "Hannah, I owe only you in this world."
"I can't forgive Oscar and you, nor accept your happiness, so I'm taking you with me."
Hannah understood. She chose to sacrifice herself for Una and Oscar.
"In the next life, hopefully we won't see Oscar again!" Lillian laughed, a laugh of release. She pressed the button.
One second. Two seconds. Three seconds.
The yacht exploded. A massive fire blazed on the sea.
Oscar had returned to shore, holding Una. Theodore waited, certain Oscar would return. He saw Oscar approaching, a surge of excitement washing over him.
Then, a boom. Fire erupted on the sea. Theodore saw Oscar freeze, his head averted.
"Oscar!"
No response.
"Oscar, don't scare me!" Theodore approached cautiously.
"Theodore," Oscar finally said, dazed. Una cried out in fear. Oscar didn't look at her.
"I give up Hannah," he whispered.
Theodore was shocked, realizing Hannah was on the yacht. He felt the weight of his debt to her, regret welling in his eyes.
Oscar coughed, blood staining his lips.
"Oscar!" Theodore reached for him.
"Don't touch me!" Oscar weakly commanded, his authority still evident.
Theodore obeyed. "Carry Una," Oscar ordered.
Theodore complied. As he lifted Una, Oscar collapsed.
No one dared approach. Tears and blood streamed down his face. He lay staring at the brightening sky. Dawn broke. But Hannah's smile, tears, and indifference were lost to him forever.
Oscar closed his eyes, the world silencing around him. If there was an afterlife, he wished only to be a silent observer of her happiness, yearning for a world where Hannah lived.
