Chapter 165 AURORA
The journal lay open before me, its old pages still faintly glowing with the residual magic that had broken Reedโs enchantment.
My fingers trembled slightly as I turned another page. Reading my motherโs words felt almost intrusive, but I couldnโt stop.
Her voice seemed to echo in my head as I traced the delicate symbols, their meaning unraveling effortlessly before my eyes.
Her warnings about the Nameless were vivid and terrifying, but there was a hope woven through them, a belief that she had left tools for me to fight back.
A soft knock at the door broke my focus.
โCome in,โ I called, my voice steadier than I felt.
Evander stepped in, his face looking dull.
His usual charm was absent, replaced by the sharp intensity that had defined him since he started leading missions for me.
He looked like he hadnโt slept in days, completely worn out. โI just got word from my team,โ he said, going straight to the point.
โWeโve narrowed the Namelessโs lair to a region in the mountains, but it will take more than just scouting to confirm.โ
My heart raced at the news, but I forced myself to stay calm. โHow dangerous are the wards?โ
Evander crossed his arms, leaning against the wall.
โWell, my dear, itโs strong enough to kill anyone who gets too close without the right protection. The Nameless isnโt leaving anything to chance.โ
โThen weโll need to act quickly,โ I said, closing the journal and rising to my feet. โWe canโt let him strengthen those defenses any further.โ
His expression darkened. โYouโre not seriously thinking about going yourself.โ
I met his gaze.
โOf course, I am. Who else would go? This isnโt just about strategy, Evander. Itโs about Dane. If thereโs even a chance I can weaken the Namelessโs hold on him, then so be itโฆโ
โDonโt,โ he cut in sharply, his voice low. โDonโt make this about him. Not entirely.โ
I flinched at the edge of his tone but refused to back down.
โThis is about all of us. About the pack. About stopping the Nameless before he destroys everything weโve built. But yes, itโs also about Dane. Iโm not going to apologize for that.โ
Evanderโs jaw tightened, but before he could respond, the door opened again, and Trajan entered. He took one look at us and sighed heavily.
โWhat now?โ he asked, his voice filled with anxiousness.
โEvander has news,โ I said, stepping back to give him space.
Trajan raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms as he waited.
Evander filled him in on the lairโs location, the wards, and the challenges weโd face getting close.
By the time he finished, Trajanโs expression had gone from annoyed to dull as well.
โAnd Aurora wants to go alone,โ Evander added, his tone biting.
Trajan turned to me, his expression a mix of frustration and concern. โAurora, noโฆ Absolutely not.โ
I crossed my arms. โI didnโt realize I needed permission.โ
โYou donโt,โ he said, his voice softening. โBut this isnโt like the traps youโve set before. This is the Namelessโs stronghold. If you get caughtโฆโ He trailed off, his jaw tightening.
โWe canโt afford to lose you.โ
โIโm not planning on getting caught,โ I replied, rolling my eyes.
โYou think thatโs enough?โ Trajanโs voice rose, frustration boiling over. โYou think your plans and your magic and your good intentions are enough to keep you alive against a god? You have no wolf, Aurora. You canโt keep relying onโฆ.โ
โThatโs enough,โ I snapped, my voice cutting through his.
The room fell silent.
โI know the risks,โ I said, my voice steady but firm. โI know what Iโm walking into. But I also know whatโs at stake. This isnโt just about me. This is about the entire pack, the twins, you, and yes, itโs about Dane. So unless you have a better idea, I suggest you stop trying to talk me out of it and start figuring out how to make this work.โ
Trajan stared at me for a long moment, his frustration warring with something else, something deeper.
Finally, he exhaled, running a hand through his hair.
โIโll go with you,โ he said at last.
โNo,โ I said immediately. โI need you here. If something happens, the pack needs its Beta.โ
Trajanโs expression hardened. โAnd the Luna?โ
โThe Luna will come back,โ I said, forcing a small smile. โShe always does.โ
It was a lie. I didnโt know if Iโd come back. But I couldnโt let them see my fear. Not now.
Evander shifted, breaking the tense silence. โIโll go,โ he said.
I turned to him, startled. โWhat?โ
โYou need someone to scout ahead, to check for weak points in the wards,โ he said. โIโm your best option. Let me handle this.โ
I hesitated. Evander was right, he was the most experienced, the most capable. But the thought of sending him into that danger made my stomach twist.
โAre you sure?โ I asked quietly.
He nodded, his expression resolute. โThis is what I do, Aurora. Let me do it.โ
I swallowed hard, then nodded.
โAll right. But you donโt go alone. Take two of the best with you. No unnecessary risks.โ
A ghost of a smile crossed his lips. โWhen have I ever taken unnecessary risks?โ
I raised an eyebrow, but he was already heading for the door.
Trajan stayed behind, observing me. โYouโre playing with fire,โ he said quietly.
โWell, let me give you a heads up, I know that already,โ I replied.
โDo you?โ His gaze was piercing. โBecause if youโre wrong, if this goes sidewaysโฆ weโll lose more than just Evander. Youโre the glue holding this pack together, Aurora. Donโt forget that.โ
I looked away, the weight of his words settling heavily on my shoulders.
โI wonโt forget,โ I said softly.
But as Trajan left the room, I couldnโt shake the feeling that I was already losing pieces of myself to the fight.
I turned back to the journal, running my fingers over its worn cover. My motherโs words had guided me this far. Maybe they would guide me through this, too.
As I opened the book and began to read again, a faint whisper brushed against my mind, a warning, or perhaps a promise.
The Nameless is watching.
I shivered but didnโt stop reading.
I couldnโt afford to stop.
Not now.
Not ever.
