Chapter 165 AURORA

The journal lay open before me, its old pages still faintly glowing with the residual magic that had broken Reedโ€™s enchantment.

My fingers trembled slightly as I turned another page. Reading my motherโ€™s words felt almost intrusive, but I couldnโ€™t stop.

Her voice seemed to echo in my head as I traced the delicate symbols, their meaning unraveling effortlessly before my eyes.

Her warnings about the Nameless were vivid and terrifying, but there was a hope woven through them, a belief that she had left tools for me to fight back.

A soft knock at the door broke my focus.

โ€œCome in,โ€ I called, my voice steadier than I felt.

Evander stepped in, his face looking dull.

His usual charm was absent, replaced by the sharp intensity that had defined him since he started leading missions for me.

He looked like he hadnโ€™t slept in days, completely worn out. โ€œI just got word from my team,โ€ he said, going straight to the point.

โ€œWeโ€™ve narrowed the Namelessโ€™s lair to a region in the mountains, but it will take more than just scouting to confirm.โ€

My heart raced at the news, but I forced myself to stay calm. โ€œHow dangerous are the wards?โ€

Evander crossed his arms, leaning against the wall.

โ€œWell, my dear, itโ€™s strong enough to kill anyone who gets too close without the right protection. The Nameless isnโ€™t leaving anything to chance.โ€

โ€œThen weโ€™ll need to act quickly,โ€ I said, closing the journal and rising to my feet. โ€œWe canโ€™t let him strengthen those defenses any further.โ€

His expression darkened. โ€œYouโ€™re not seriously thinking about going yourself.โ€

I met his gaze.

โ€œOf course, I am. Who else would go? This isnโ€™t just about strategy, Evander. Itโ€™s about Dane. If thereโ€™s even a chance I can weaken the Namelessโ€™s hold on him, then so be itโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDonโ€™t,โ€ he cut in sharply, his voice low. โ€œDonโ€™t make this about him. Not entirely.โ€

I flinched at the edge of his tone but refused to back down.

โ€œThis is about all of us. About the pack. About stopping the Nameless before he destroys everything weโ€™ve built. But yes, itโ€™s also about Dane. Iโ€™m not going to apologize for that.โ€

Evanderโ€™s jaw tightened, but before he could respond, the door opened again, and Trajan entered. He took one look at us and sighed heavily.

โ€œWhat now?โ€ he asked, his voice filled with anxiousness.

โ€œEvander has news,โ€ I said, stepping back to give him space.

Trajan raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms as he waited.

Evander filled him in on the lairโ€™s location, the wards, and the challenges weโ€™d face getting close.

By the time he finished, Trajanโ€™s expression had gone from annoyed to dull as well.

โ€œAnd Aurora wants to go alone,โ€ Evander added, his tone biting.

Trajan turned to me, his expression a mix of frustration and concern. โ€œAurora, noโ€ฆ Absolutely not.โ€

I crossed my arms. โ€œI didnโ€™t realize I needed permission.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t,โ€ he said, his voice softening. โ€œBut this isnโ€™t like the traps youโ€™ve set before. This is the Namelessโ€™s stronghold. If you get caughtโ€ฆโ€ He trailed off, his jaw tightening.

โ€œWe canโ€™t afford to lose you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not planning on getting caught,โ€ I replied, rolling my eyes.

โ€œYou think thatโ€™s enough?โ€ Trajanโ€™s voice rose, frustration boiling over. โ€œYou think your plans and your magic and your good intentions are enough to keep you alive against a god? You have no wolf, Aurora. You canโ€™t keep relying onโ€ฆ.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s enough,โ€ I snapped, my voice cutting through his.

The room fell silent.

โ€œI know the risks,โ€ I said, my voice steady but firm. โ€œI know what Iโ€™m walking into. But I also know whatโ€™s at stake. This isnโ€™t just about me. This is about the entire pack, the twins, you, and yes, itโ€™s about Dane. So unless you have a better idea, I suggest you stop trying to talk me out of it and start figuring out how to make this work.โ€

Trajan stared at me for a long moment, his frustration warring with something else, something deeper.

Finally, he exhaled, running a hand through his hair.

โ€œIโ€™ll go with you,โ€ he said at last.

โ€œNo,โ€ I said immediately. โ€œI need you here. If something happens, the pack needs its Beta.โ€

Trajanโ€™s expression hardened. โ€œAnd the Luna?โ€

โ€œThe Luna will come back,โ€ I said, forcing a small smile. โ€œShe always does.โ€

It was a lie. I didnโ€™t know if Iโ€™d come back. But I couldnโ€™t let them see my fear. Not now.

Evander shifted, breaking the tense silence. โ€œIโ€™ll go,โ€ he said.

I turned to him, startled. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYou need someone to scout ahead, to check for weak points in the wards,โ€ he said. โ€œIโ€™m your best option. Let me handle this.โ€

I hesitated. Evander was right, he was the most experienced, the most capable. But the thought of sending him into that danger made my stomach twist.

โ€œAre you sure?โ€ I asked quietly.

He nodded, his expression resolute. โ€œThis is what I do, Aurora. Let me do it.โ€

I swallowed hard, then nodded.

โ€œAll right. But you donโ€™t go alone. Take two of the best with you. No unnecessary risks.โ€

A ghost of a smile crossed his lips. โ€œWhen have I ever taken unnecessary risks?โ€

I raised an eyebrow, but he was already heading for the door.

Trajan stayed behind, observing me. โ€œYouโ€™re playing with fire,โ€ he said quietly.

โ€œWell, let me give you a heads up, I know that already,โ€ I replied.

โ€œDo you?โ€ His gaze was piercing. โ€œBecause if youโ€™re wrong, if this goes sidewaysโ€ฆ weโ€™ll lose more than just Evander. Youโ€™re the glue holding this pack together, Aurora. Donโ€™t forget that.โ€

I looked away, the weight of his words settling heavily on my shoulders.

โ€œI wonโ€™t forget,โ€ I said softly.

But as Trajan left the room, I couldnโ€™t shake the feeling that I was already losing pieces of myself to the fight.

I turned back to the journal, running my fingers over its worn cover. My motherโ€™s words had guided me this far. Maybe they would guide me through this, too.

As I opened the book and began to read again, a faint whisper brushed against my mind, a warning, or perhaps a promise.

The Nameless is watching.

I shivered but didnโ€™t stop reading.

I couldnโ€™t afford to stop.

Not now.

Not ever.
