Chapter 266 DANE
Aurora stood frozen outside the hallway. She looked disturbed.
Iโd had enough. The whispers, the sideways glances, the tension rippling through the packโit all pointed to one name: Alina.
Slamming the training roster onto my desk, I stood abruptly. โThis ends now,โ I muttered, the frustration bubbling over as I stormed out of the packhouse.
I found her by the gardens, plucking weeds with a near serene expression, as if she hadnโt been the root of every problem that had plagued us. โAlina!โ
She looked up, her facial expression unchanged. โYes, Alpha?โ
โWhat game are you playing?โ I asked, my voice merciless and razor sharp.
Alina cocked her head, pretending to be confused. โGame? I donโt understand what you mean.โ
โYou know exactly what I mean,โ I said, closing the distance further. โRowan. The fire. The whispers in the pack. It leads to you.โ
Her laughter was light, nearly condescending. โYouโre deceiving yourself, Dane. You arrested Rowan; now you are coming after me? For what? Breathing?โ
โYou have been playing with their heads,โ I told her with fisted hands. โStop pretending to be innocent with me.โ
Alina stood, brushing dirt from her hands. โIf you had proof, Alpha, you wouldnโt be here questioning me. The truth is, you donโt. Youโre grasping at shadows because youโre afraid to admit you donโt have control.โ
Her words stung more than I wanted to admit. โMark my words, Alina. If I find out youโre behind this, there will be no mercy.โ
Aurora was pacing her office when I got back. โSheโs slippery,โ I said, slumping into a chair.
โI know,โ she murmured, lost in thought. โBut sheโs made mistakes. Everyone does.โ
She pulled out a stack of papers, her eyes scanning them with laser focus. โWhat am I looking for?โ
โPatterns,โ she replied. โConnections. Alinaโs smart, but sheโs not flawless.โ
After scanning the records for hours, Auroraโs face finally lit up.
โHere.โ She pointed to a series of supply logs. โEvery time something has gone wrongโmissing resources, unexplained damageโAlina has always been there.โ
I leaned over to study the papers. โThis is something.โ
โItโs not enough to prove her guilt outright,โ Aurora admitted, โbut itโs a start. If we follow this trail, weโll find the truth.โ
I saw Trajan and Joclyn sitting by the hearth, their voices low but urgent.
โSheโs been using Rowan,โ Trajan said, his jaw tight.
โEvery action heโs taken has only served to cause chaos,โ Joclyn nodded.
โAnd she is brilliant, never implicating herself, always letting another take the blame while she pulls the strings.โ
โHow did we miss this?โ Trajan asked, frustration evident in his tone.
โSheโs a master of being in the background,โ Joclyn replied. โBut we know now, and there we can act. This needs to go to Aurora and Dane.โ
Meanwhile, while tensions increased, Piper and Warrick had been really helpful as they were working like crazy to hold the pack together.
โWe need to reduce the rumors,โ Piper said, arms crossed, facing a small congregation of wolves. โWeโre stronger together, but this division will tear us apart.โ
Warrick nodded. โIf you have concerns, bring them to Aurora or I directly. Spreading whispers only helps whoeverโs trying to destabilize us.โ
One wolf, a young male, raised his voice shyly. โBut what if Rowan really didโฆโ
โHe didnโt,โ Piper cut in firmly. โAnd even if he makes mistakes, we deal with them as a pack. Together.โ
There was the exchange of a pair of uncertain wolf glances, then Warrick stepped forward, firm but encouraging: โTrust our leaders, trust in each otherโthatโs how we get through this.โ
Deep into the night while I was strolling, I noticed that Alina was speaking to a wolf near the edges of the village.
Their voices came low, and it would be impossible not to note a catch. โYou are positive Rowan wonโt say anything?โ he asked, his tone edged with doubt.
Alinaโs smile deepened, her confidence unflappable. โHeโs too lost in his guilt to see the truth. Rowan thinks heโs to blame for everything. Thatโs what makes him useful.โ
The wolf shifted uneasily. โBut what if he talks? What if Aurora gets through to him?โ
Alina let out a soft laugh, the sound cold and dismissive. โAuroraโs kind heart is her weakness. Sheโll want to believe him, to save him. But Iโve left enough doubt in her mind to make sure sheโll hesitate. By the time she figures out whatโs really happening, itโll all be over.โ
The wolf frowned, his skepticism written across his face. โAnd what of Dane? He is not the sort of man to sit and do nothing while things burn down around him, either.โ
The eyes of Alina flashed, razor sharp. โDaneโs power is his weakness: too straightforward, hence predictable. Heโll come out at me quite sure Iโm the only game in town. Little does he know how far ahead I am walking.โ
The wolf rubbed the back of his neck; a feeling of unease slowly crept over him. โThis feels really risky, Alina. What if the pack turns against you?โ
โThey wonโt,โ she said confidently. โBy the time they see the cracks, theyโll be too fractured to fight back. And when the dust settles, theyโll need someone to guide them.โ
She took a step closer, her voice dropping to a near whisper. โThat someone will be me.โ
The wolf hesitated, then asked, โAnd what about Rowan? What happens to him once youโveโฆ achieved what you want?โ
Alinaโs expression only darkened somewhat, her smirk still twisting her lips. โRowanโs purpose is almost served. Heโs a pawn, and like any pawn, heโll be sacrificed when the time comes. Until then, Iโll keep him where I need himโlost, confused, and under my control.โ
The wolfโs jaw clenched, and he shifted uncomfortably. โAnd if he breaks free?โ
Alina cocked her head to one side; the smirk twisted into something almost cruel. โHe wonโt. But if he triesโฆ Well, accidents happen.โ
The wolf cast a glance in the direction of the village. Conflict etched itself across his face. โThis is a dangerous game, Alina.โ
โAll games are dangerous,โ she returned smoothly. โBut thatโs what makes them worth playing.โ
For a moment, the wolf seemed as if he wanted to argue, but he kept quiet. Alinaโs eyes shone bright in the frail moonlight as she stepped backward; her tone was final.
โTomorrow, I go to see Rowan in his cell. I have one last piece to play.โ
As the wolf vanished into the night, Alina stood there a moment longer, her smile slowly icing into a chill. She whispered, โEverything is falling perfectly in place.โ
