Chapter 266 DANE

Aurora stood frozen outside the hallway. She looked disturbed.

Iโ€™d had enough. The whispers, the sideways glances, the tension rippling through the packโ€”it all pointed to one name: Alina.

Slamming the training roster onto my desk, I stood abruptly. โ€œThis ends now,โ€ I muttered, the frustration bubbling over as I stormed out of the packhouse.

I found her by the gardens, plucking weeds with a near serene expression, as if she hadnโ€™t been the root of every problem that had plagued us. โ€œAlina!โ€

She looked up, her facial expression unchanged. โ€œYes, Alpha?โ€

โ€œWhat game are you playing?โ€ I asked, my voice merciless and razor sharp.

Alina cocked her head, pretending to be confused. โ€œGame? I donโ€™t understand what you mean.โ€

โ€œYou know exactly what I mean,โ€ I said, closing the distance further. โ€œRowan. The fire. The whispers in the pack. It leads to you.โ€

Her laughter was light, nearly condescending. โ€œYouโ€™re deceiving yourself, Dane. You arrested Rowan; now you are coming after me? For what? Breathing?โ€

โ€œYou have been playing with their heads,โ€ I told her with fisted hands. โ€œStop pretending to be innocent with me.โ€

Alina stood, brushing dirt from her hands. โ€œIf you had proof, Alpha, you wouldnโ€™t be here questioning me. The truth is, you donโ€™t. Youโ€™re grasping at shadows because youโ€™re afraid to admit you donโ€™t have control.โ€

Her words stung more than I wanted to admit. โ€œMark my words, Alina. If I find out youโ€™re behind this, there will be no mercy.โ€

Aurora was pacing her office when I got back. โ€œSheโ€™s slippery,โ€ I said, slumping into a chair.

โ€œI know,โ€ she murmured, lost in thought. โ€œBut sheโ€™s made mistakes. Everyone does.โ€

She pulled out a stack of papers, her eyes scanning them with laser focus. โ€œWhat am I looking for?โ€

โ€œPatterns,โ€ she replied. โ€œConnections. Alinaโ€™s smart, but sheโ€™s not flawless.โ€

After scanning the records for hours, Auroraโ€™s face finally lit up.

โ€œHere.โ€ She pointed to a series of supply logs. โ€œEvery time something has gone wrongโ€”missing resources, unexplained damageโ€”Alina has always been there.โ€

I leaned over to study the papers. โ€œThis is something.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not enough to prove her guilt outright,โ€ Aurora admitted, โ€œbut itโ€™s a start. If we follow this trail, weโ€™ll find the truth.โ€

I saw Trajan and Joclyn sitting by the hearth, their voices low but urgent.

โ€œSheโ€™s been using Rowan,โ€ Trajan said, his jaw tight.

โ€œEvery action heโ€™s taken has only served to cause chaos,โ€ Joclyn nodded.

โ€œAnd she is brilliant, never implicating herself, always letting another take the blame while she pulls the strings.โ€

โ€œHow did we miss this?โ€ Trajan asked, frustration evident in his tone.

โ€œSheโ€™s a master of being in the background,โ€ Joclyn replied. โ€œBut we know now, and there we can act. This needs to go to Aurora and Dane.โ€

Meanwhile, while tensions increased, Piper and Warrick had been really helpful as they were working like crazy to hold the pack together.

โ€œWe need to reduce the rumors,โ€ Piper said, arms crossed, facing a small congregation of wolves. โ€œWeโ€™re stronger together, but this division will tear us apart.โ€

Warrick nodded. โ€œIf you have concerns, bring them to Aurora or I directly. Spreading whispers only helps whoeverโ€™s trying to destabilize us.โ€

One wolf, a young male, raised his voice shyly. โ€œBut what if Rowan really didโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHe didnโ€™t,โ€ Piper cut in firmly. โ€œAnd even if he makes mistakes, we deal with them as a pack. Together.โ€

There was the exchange of a pair of uncertain wolf glances, then Warrick stepped forward, firm but encouraging: โ€œTrust our leaders, trust in each otherโ€”thatโ€™s how we get through this.โ€

Deep into the night while I was strolling, I noticed that Alina was speaking to a wolf near the edges of the village.

Their voices came low, and it would be impossible not to note a catch. โ€œYou are positive Rowan wonโ€™t say anything?โ€ he asked, his tone edged with doubt.

Alinaโ€™s smile deepened, her confidence unflappable. โ€œHeโ€™s too lost in his guilt to see the truth. Rowan thinks heโ€™s to blame for everything. Thatโ€™s what makes him useful.โ€

The wolf shifted uneasily. โ€œBut what if he talks? What if Aurora gets through to him?โ€

Alina let out a soft laugh, the sound cold and dismissive. โ€œAuroraโ€™s kind heart is her weakness. Sheโ€™ll want to believe him, to save him. But Iโ€™ve left enough doubt in her mind to make sure sheโ€™ll hesitate. By the time she figures out whatโ€™s really happening, itโ€™ll all be over.โ€

The wolf frowned, his skepticism written across his face. โ€œAnd what of Dane? He is not the sort of man to sit and do nothing while things burn down around him, either.โ€

The eyes of Alina flashed, razor sharp. โ€œDaneโ€™s power is his weakness: too straightforward, hence predictable. Heโ€™ll come out at me quite sure Iโ€™m the only game in town. Little does he know how far ahead I am walking.โ€

The wolf rubbed the back of his neck; a feeling of unease slowly crept over him. โ€œThis feels really risky, Alina. What if the pack turns against you?โ€

โ€œThey wonโ€™t,โ€ she said confidently. โ€œBy the time they see the cracks, theyโ€™ll be too fractured to fight back. And when the dust settles, theyโ€™ll need someone to guide them.โ€

She took a step closer, her voice dropping to a near whisper. โ€œThat someone will be me.โ€

The wolf hesitated, then asked, โ€œAnd what about Rowan? What happens to him once youโ€™veโ€ฆ achieved what you want?โ€

Alinaโ€™s expression only darkened somewhat, her smirk still twisting her lips. โ€œRowanโ€™s purpose is almost served. Heโ€™s a pawn, and like any pawn, heโ€™ll be sacrificed when the time comes. Until then, Iโ€™ll keep him where I need himโ€”lost, confused, and under my control.โ€

The wolfโ€™s jaw clenched, and he shifted uncomfortably. โ€œAnd if he breaks free?โ€

Alina cocked her head to one side; the smirk twisted into something almost cruel. โ€œHe wonโ€™t. But if he triesโ€ฆ Well, accidents happen.โ€

The wolf cast a glance in the direction of the village. Conflict etched itself across his face. โ€œThis is a dangerous game, Alina.โ€

โ€œAll games are dangerous,โ€ she returned smoothly. โ€œBut thatโ€™s what makes them worth playing.โ€

For a moment, the wolf seemed as if he wanted to argue, but he kept quiet. Alinaโ€™s eyes shone bright in the frail moonlight as she stepped backward; her tone was final.

โ€œTomorrow, I go to see Rowan in his cell. I have one last piece to play.โ€

As the wolf vanished into the night, Alina stood there a moment longer, her smile slowly icing into a chill. She whispered, โ€œEverything is falling perfectly in place.โ€
