Chapter 280
The moon was low in the sky, casting a thin sheen over the meeting point. My heart skittered with anticipation as I stepped out into the clearing where trees whispered ominous nothings all around. Calla leaned against a tree, her smirk slicing through the tension.
โRight on time,โ she said, her voice a silk-lined dagger.
I halted a few feet away, crossing my arms to keep them from shaking. โWhat is it that you want now?โ
Calla pushed off from the tree, each movement smooth and purposeful. โOh, Lila, donโt be so indignant. We both know why you are here.โ
I cut her off, clenching my jaw to avoid showing her how she affected me. โGet to the point.โ
Callaโs smile grew. โWell, Rowan. He has been doing so well, hasnโt he? Closing in. Drawing nearer. But heโs gotten sidetracked.โ
Something in her tone twisted my gut. โRowan is no danger to the pack,โ I said, harder than I intended.
Calla cocked her head, concern twinkling in her eyes.
Chapter 280 (Continued)
โOh, sweet Lila. Itโs not about what Rowan is or isnโt. Itโs about what he represents as an opportunity.โ
โWhat opportunity?โ I asked.
โNo,โ I said, firmly, though my voice shook. โIโm done with this. I wonโt betray the pack.โ
Callaโs eyes slitted, the smirk gone. She took another step closer, her voice going low, almost deadly in its whisper: โYou think you can just walk away? Like itโs that simple?โ I didnโt back down, but my legs did shake.
โIโve done everything you wanted, kept quiet, played along, and I wonโt anymore. Rowan doesnโt deserve this, neither does the pack.โ
Calla cocked her head. Her face was impassive. โHow noble of you,โ she spat. โBut let me remind you of something, Lila. You owe me. Without me, you wouldnโt even be here.โ
I clenched my fists. โAnd for how long do you think thatโll faze me? The pack has enough suspicions concerning me, Calla. And once you drive a bit furtherโโ
Calla let out a low, cutthroat laugh. โSweet Lila. Really think theyโd believe you and not me? Youโre but an outsider with the group; every single moment of this packโs survival, you always will be.โ
Those words cut much deeper than I was willing to admit, but I didnโt back off. โMaybe Iโm an outsider, but at least Iโm trying to belong. What about you? All you do is destroy.โ
That smirk was back, sharper than before. โDestroying is a lot easier than building. You ought to know that by now.โ
Before I could say a word, footsteps behind me froze us both. I turned to see Piper step into the clearing, her gaze flicking between Calla and me.
โWell, well,โ Piper said, her tone rife with sarcasm. โThis looksโฆ interesting.โ
Calla was quick on the rebound; her smirk gentled into a more neutral curve. โPiper, howโฆ unexpected. Nobody told you that trying to put your ear in other peopleโs business is impolite?โ
Piper lifted a brow, folding her arms. โI wasnโt eavesdropping. I was following. Big difference.โ She kept her keen gaze on me. โAnd you? Whatโs this all about, Lila?โ
My throat was dry, the words wrestling with each other in my brain. โIโโ
โSheโs just confused,โ Calla said smoothly, pushing in front of me, as if to block me. โYou know how tough pack life is sometimes when someoneโs still settling in.โ Piper wasnโt buying it.
โTough enough that they hold secret meetings in the middle of the night? Yeah, right. Again.โ
Chapter 280 (Continued)
Calla dramatically huffed, as if Piper was some disturbance she put up with. โHonestly, Piper, youโve been everywhere exhausts me. If you spent a little more time minding your own business, you wouldnโt have to go poking around in other peopleโs affairs.โ
Piperโs eyes narrowed. โAnd if you werenโt being so shifty, I wouldnโt have to.โ
The silence between them was electric with tension; I could hardly breathe. โStop,โ I said, my voice much louder than I intended. They looked at me, their glares cutting.
โIโฆ I didnโt mean for any of this to happen,โ I stammered, glancing between the pair. โI only wanted to help the pack.โ
โHelp the pack?โ Piper repeated, her tone honing like a razor. โBy sneaking around with her?โ She pointed at Calla.
Calla snorted, clearly thrilled by the conflict. โItโs adorable, really, how protective you are. But donโt you think youโre overreacting just a bit?โ
Piper ignored her, moving closer to me. โLila, if youโre keeping something from us, nowโs the time to spill. Otherwise, Iโm not helping you.โ
The sincerity in her voice broke something in me, but before I could utter a word, Callaโs voice cut through.
โEnough of this, Lila doesnโt owe you an explanation, and if anything, you owe her an apology for your baseless accusations.โ
Piper laughed, a sound devoid of humor. โBaseless? You mean like the way youโve been manipulating everyone around you? How long do you think you can keep this act up, Calla?โ
Piperโs words wiped the smirk off Callaโs face; her eyes had gone ice. โLong enough to outlast you, Piper.โ
โTry me,โ Piper shot back.
The air was thick with tension, and I felt torn between two storms. Every fiber in my body screamed to run, yet this was something from which I could not escape.
Piperโs face softened as she looked at me again. โLila, if youโre in some sort of trouble, I can help. Just tell me the truth.โ
Calla leaned in, her words a whispered threat. โSpeak very carefully, Lila. Consider what you could lose.โ
Their words whipped against me like ropes, lashing at my face. My chest felt the heavy weight of choice, and in a nanosecond, I forgot to breathe.
It was the first time that Piper hesitated; a shade of doubt passed over her features. โWhatโs going on?โ
Venom dripped from Callaโs voice; her smile grew wider. โOh, Piper, so righteous and yet even the righteous have secrets of their own. I wonder how the pack is going to take it when they find out about him.โ
Chapter 280 (Continued)
I felt my stomach drop. โCalla, donโtโโ
She raised her hand, silencing me. โYou arenโt running things here, Lila. You never were.โ
Piper took another step closer; her voice was shaking with pent-up anger. โYouโre bluffing.โ
โAm I?โ Callaโs smile twisted cruelly. โOne little whisper, Piper, and everything youโve worked for comes crashing down. The packโs trust, Warrickโs loveโฆ all gone. Do you want to take that risk?โ
Piperโs fists clenched at her sides, her breathing uneven. For a moment, I thought she might rush at Calla. Instead, she turned to me, her eyes imploring. โLila, is she telling the truth? Does she really know something?โ
The weight of their gazes pressed upon me, threatening to shatter me. โPiper, Iโฆโ
Calla cut me off, an acid undertone in her whisper. โChoose wisely, Lila. The next move could determine everything.โ
