Chapter 280

The moon was low in the sky, casting a thin sheen over the meeting point. My heart skittered with anticipation as I stepped out into the clearing where trees whispered ominous nothings all around. Calla leaned against a tree, her smirk slicing through the tension.

โ€œRight on time,โ€ she said, her voice a silk-lined dagger.

I halted a few feet away, crossing my arms to keep them from shaking. โ€œWhat is it that you want now?โ€

Calla pushed off from the tree, each movement smooth and purposeful. โ€œOh, Lila, donโ€™t be so indignant. We both know why you are here.โ€

I cut her off, clenching my jaw to avoid showing her how she affected me. โ€œGet to the point.โ€

Callaโ€™s smile grew. โ€œWell, Rowan. He has been doing so well, hasnโ€™t he? Closing in. Drawing nearer. But heโ€™s gotten sidetracked.โ€

Something in her tone twisted my gut. โ€œRowan is no danger to the pack,โ€ I said, harder than I intended.

Calla cocked her head, concern twinkling in her eyes.

Chapter 280 (Continued)

โ€œOh, sweet Lila. Itโ€™s not about what Rowan is or isnโ€™t. Itโ€™s about what he represents as an opportunity.โ€

โ€œWhat opportunity?โ€ I asked.

โ€œNo,โ€ I said, firmly, though my voice shook. โ€œIโ€™m done with this. I wonโ€™t betray the pack.โ€

Callaโ€™s eyes slitted, the smirk gone. She took another step closer, her voice going low, almost deadly in its whisper: โ€œYou think you can just walk away? Like itโ€™s that simple?โ€ I didnโ€™t back down, but my legs did shake.

โ€œIโ€™ve done everything you wanted, kept quiet, played along, and I wonโ€™t anymore. Rowan doesnโ€™t deserve this, neither does the pack.โ€

Calla cocked her head. Her face was impassive. โ€œHow noble of you,โ€ she spat. โ€œBut let me remind you of something, Lila. You owe me. Without me, you wouldnโ€™t even be here.โ€

I clenched my fists. โ€œAnd for how long do you think thatโ€™ll faze me? The pack has enough suspicions concerning me, Calla. And once you drive a bit furtherโ€”โ€

Calla let out a low, cutthroat laugh. โ€œSweet Lila. Really think theyโ€™d believe you and not me? Youโ€™re but an outsider with the group; every single moment of this packโ€™s survival, you always will be.โ€

Those words cut much deeper than I was willing to admit, but I didnโ€™t back off. โ€œMaybe Iโ€™m an outsider, but at least Iโ€™m trying to belong. What about you? All you do is destroy.โ€

That smirk was back, sharper than before. โ€œDestroying is a lot easier than building. You ought to know that by now.โ€

Before I could say a word, footsteps behind me froze us both. I turned to see Piper step into the clearing, her gaze flicking between Calla and me.

โ€œWell, well,โ€ Piper said, her tone rife with sarcasm. โ€œThis looksโ€ฆ interesting.โ€

Calla was quick on the rebound; her smirk gentled into a more neutral curve. โ€œPiper, howโ€ฆ unexpected. Nobody told you that trying to put your ear in other peopleโ€™s business is impolite?โ€

Piper lifted a brow, folding her arms. โ€œI wasnโ€™t eavesdropping. I was following. Big difference.โ€ She kept her keen gaze on me. โ€œAnd you? Whatโ€™s this all about, Lila?โ€

My throat was dry, the words wrestling with each other in my brain. โ€œIโ€”โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s just confused,โ€ Calla said smoothly, pushing in front of me, as if to block me. โ€œYou know how tough pack life is sometimes when someoneโ€™s still settling in.โ€ Piper wasnโ€™t buying it.

โ€œTough enough that they hold secret meetings in the middle of the night? Yeah, right. Again.โ€

Chapter 280 (Continued)

Calla dramatically huffed, as if Piper was some disturbance she put up with. โ€œHonestly, Piper, youโ€™ve been everywhere exhausts me. If you spent a little more time minding your own business, you wouldnโ€™t have to go poking around in other peopleโ€™s affairs.โ€

Piperโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œAnd if you werenโ€™t being so shifty, I wouldnโ€™t have to.โ€

The silence between them was electric with tension; I could hardly breathe. โ€œStop,โ€ I said, my voice much louder than I intended. They looked at me, their glares cutting.

โ€œIโ€ฆ I didnโ€™t mean for any of this to happen,โ€ I stammered, glancing between the pair. โ€œI only wanted to help the pack.โ€

โ€œHelp the pack?โ€ Piper repeated, her tone honing like a razor. โ€œBy sneaking around with her?โ€ She pointed at Calla.

Calla snorted, clearly thrilled by the conflict. โ€œItโ€™s adorable, really, how protective you are. But donโ€™t you think youโ€™re overreacting just a bit?โ€

Piper ignored her, moving closer to me. โ€œLila, if youโ€™re keeping something from us, nowโ€™s the time to spill. Otherwise, Iโ€™m not helping you.โ€

The sincerity in her voice broke something in me, but before I could utter a word, Callaโ€™s voice cut through.

โ€œEnough of this, Lila doesnโ€™t owe you an explanation, and if anything, you owe her an apology for your baseless accusations.โ€

Piper laughed, a sound devoid of humor. โ€œBaseless? You mean like the way youโ€™ve been manipulating everyone around you? How long do you think you can keep this act up, Calla?โ€

Piperโ€™s words wiped the smirk off Callaโ€™s face; her eyes had gone ice. โ€œLong enough to outlast you, Piper.โ€

โ€œTry me,โ€ Piper shot back.

The air was thick with tension, and I felt torn between two storms. Every fiber in my body screamed to run, yet this was something from which I could not escape.

Piperโ€™s face softened as she looked at me again. โ€œLila, if youโ€™re in some sort of trouble, I can help. Just tell me the truth.โ€

Calla leaned in, her words a whispered threat. โ€œSpeak very carefully, Lila. Consider what you could lose.โ€

Their words whipped against me like ropes, lashing at my face. My chest felt the heavy weight of choice, and in a nanosecond, I forgot to breathe.

It was the first time that Piper hesitated; a shade of doubt passed over her features. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€

Venom dripped from Callaโ€™s voice; her smile grew wider. โ€œOh, Piper, so righteous and yet even the righteous have secrets of their own. I wonder how the pack is going to take it when they find out about him.โ€

Chapter 280 (Continued)

I felt my stomach drop. โ€œCalla, donโ€™tโ€”โ€

She raised her hand, silencing me. โ€œYou arenโ€™t running things here, Lila. You never were.โ€

Piper took another step closer; her voice was shaking with pent-up anger. โ€œYouโ€™re bluffing.โ€

โ€œAm I?โ€ Callaโ€™s smile twisted cruelly. โ€œOne little whisper, Piper, and everything youโ€™ve worked for comes crashing down. The packโ€™s trust, Warrickโ€™s loveโ€ฆ all gone. Do you want to take that risk?โ€

Piperโ€™s fists clenched at her sides, her breathing uneven. For a moment, I thought she might rush at Calla. Instead, she turned to me, her eyes imploring. โ€œLila, is she telling the truth? Does she really know something?โ€

The weight of their gazes pressed upon me, threatening to shatter me. โ€œPiper, Iโ€ฆโ€

Calla cut me off, an acid undertone in her whisper. โ€œChoose wisely, Lila. The next move could determine everything.โ€
