Chapter 287

โ€œHow could you? I donโ€™t know how much more of this I can take,โ€ I said, pacing in the clearing behind the packhouse. Warrick leaned against a tree, arms crossed, frustration etched on his face. Heโ€™d called me to speak, but I couldnโ€™t stand him, not after what Iโ€™d seen. Though I felt hurt, I shouldnโ€™t show it.

โ€œPiper, please,โ€ he said, his voice strained. โ€œIโ€™ve apologized a hundred times. What more could you possibly want from me?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not about the apology, Warrick!โ€ I spat, spinning to face him. โ€œItโ€™s about trust. You broke it, and nowโ€ฆ now I donโ€™t even know who we are anymore.โ€

His jaw hardened. For a moment, he said nothing. Then his voice gentled, almost imploring. โ€œI made a mistake, Piper. I know that. But I love you. Doesnโ€™t that count for anything?โ€

I shook my head. My chest tight, I managed, โ€œLove isnโ€™t enough when I canโ€™t even trust you.โ€ The silence that followed was a chasm between us.

Finally turning away, I muttered, โ€œI need to get my head sorted,โ€ and walked off.

โ€œPiperโ€ฆ baby.โ€ I heard Warrick calling, but I didnโ€™t turn. I didnโ€™t know which way to go, but my feet carried me toward the training grounds.

I passed Rowan, sparring with a circle of younger wolves. โ€œPiper?โ€ he questioned, concern furrowing his brow.

โ€œI need someone to talk to,โ€ I whispered, halting.

He nodded and walked to a nearby bench. I followed, and we sat. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€ he asked softly.

I fumbled over words; my brain felt like a jumbled mess. โ€œItโ€™s Warrick. Everything just seems soโ€ฆ shattered. And maybe not worth saving anymore.โ€

โ€œRelationships suck, I know. But you are strong, Piper. Youโ€™ll figure it out.โ€

โ€œWill I?โ€ I said, forcing a bitter laugh. โ€œBecause right now, it feels like drowning.โ€

He leaned over and placed a reassuring hand on mine. In his quiet voice, he said, โ€œYou are not alone. Youโ€™ve got people who care about you.โ€

Blunt as the words were, they felt like a lifeline. I found myself leaning toward him; his warmth was everything.

I smiled, even as I felt confused. Warrick kept screwing up, and Rowan kept being so great. I wasnโ€™t sure what I wanted anymore.

With my eyes locked on Rowanโ€™s, he leaned closer. โ€œPiper,โ€ he whispered, his tone unsure. โ€œYou know youโ€™re important to me, right?โ€

My breath caught, and in that instant, I couldnโ€™t tear my eyes away. The space between us seemed to shrink, and in one swift moment, we were leaning in. But at the last second, I drew back, my heart pounding. โ€œI canโ€™t,โ€ I whispered, then stood abruptly.

Rowan looked as shaken as I felt. โ€œPiper, Iโ€™m sorโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI need to get going,โ€ I hastened to say, turning away before either of us could utter another word.

I returned to the packhouse; Warrick was waiting by the door. I ignored him and walked inside. I sat in my room while he remained by my door. Rowan also arrived from the direction of the training grounds, a frown on Warrickโ€™s face.

โ€œWhat the hell were you doing with her?โ€ Warrick thundered. He was loud enough that several wolves stopped and stared.

Rowan stiffened, eyes unyielding. โ€œWe were talking, Warrick. Thatโ€™s all.โ€

โ€œTalking?โ€ Warrick jeered, taking a threatening step closer. โ€œIt didnโ€™t look like just talking to me.โ€

โ€œWarrick, stop,โ€ I said, rising to my feet, but he didnโ€™t hear me.

โ€œYouโ€™ve been sniffing around her for weeks,โ€ Warrick growled, fists clenched. โ€œYou think I donโ€™t see it? You think I donโ€™t know what youโ€™re trying to do?โ€

โ€œWarrick, thatโ€™s enough,โ€ Rowan said, firm and controlled.

โ€œOh, now youโ€™re telling me what to do?โ€ Warrick sneered, stepping into Rowanโ€™s space. โ€œYou think youโ€™re better than me? You think you can just take her?โ€

Warrick was older than Rowan, making him look bigger and intimidating. But I and Rowan were just age grades.

โ€œIโ€™m not trying to take anyone,โ€ Rowan said over him, his voice rising. He glanced my way, and I pursed my lips. He continued, โ€œBut perhaps if you were treating her with the respect she deserves, you wouldnโ€™t feel so threatened.โ€

Murmurs stirred, all glancing between them in the corridor.

โ€œRespect?โ€ Warrick spat. โ€œHow dare you speak of respect.โ€

โ€œOh, then cease acting the jealous fool,โ€ was all Rowan returned. I gulped; I couldnโ€™t find the strength to ease the tension.

โ€œEnough!โ€ Auroraโ€™s voice cut through, and she stepped between them. โ€œThat is enough. Both of you.โ€

Warrick glared at Rowan one more time, chest heaving, before whirling and stalking away. Rowan held my gaze for a second, then turned to leave, leaving me with the weight of it all pressing on my chest.

Warrick stopped, whirling with a snarl. โ€œYou really think this is over, Rowan? Youโ€™re just a failure, crawling on your hands and knees to try to get places you donโ€™t deserve. Her.โ€

Rowan clenched his fists, pausing as he growled. โ€œSay what you will about me, Warrick, but knock it off with bringing Piper into it.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t get to talk about her,โ€ Warrick snapped, his voice cracking with anger and frustration. โ€œYou donโ€™t know her like I do.โ€

โ€œAnd yet here you are,โ€ Rowan said evenly, โ€œaccusing her of things she hasnโ€™t done, pushing her away because you canโ€™t handle your own guilt.โ€

โ€œEnough,โ€ Aurora repeated coldly. Stepping between the two men, she let her sharp eyes hold, unrelenting. โ€œThis pack doesnโ€™t have time for petty fights. If you cannot settle this like adults, then I will see both of you accountable.โ€

โ€œI am sorry, Luna,โ€ Rowan said, bowing slightly, then giving me one more gaze before walking off.

Warrick laughed harshly. โ€œPetty? You think this is petty, Aurora? Heโ€™s trying toโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWarrick!โ€ Auroraโ€™s voice rose above the din. โ€œIf you cared for Piper the way you claim, youโ€™d stop embarrassing her in front of everybody.โ€

Warrick faltered, his gaze flicking to me. His anger softened, replaced for a moment by something like regret.

โ€œIโ€™m not trying to embarrass anyone,โ€ he muttered.

โ€œThen act like it,โ€ Aurora said, firm but unkind.

The people finally dispersed, but the whispers lingered until Aurora turned to me: โ€œPiper, come with me. Now.โ€

Warrick would have reached for my arm, but I pulled away, my chest tight with the weight of it all.

โ€œNot now, Warrick,โ€ I managed, my voice firm though my body shook with emotion.
