Chapter 298

AURORA

I needed air, a minute free from the weight of decisions weighing me down. The afternoon sun filtered through the trees, casting shadows along the ground. My mind circled back, as it eternally did, to Dane, to the frail outline of his body in my memory.

โ€œLuna,โ€ Rowan called, his voice breaking into my thoughts. I turned to see him coming, Lila at his side; she seemed hurt, limping and with a bandage around her head. I didnโ€™t bother to ask her how it happened. Nerves were betrayed in every angle; his eyes flickered from mine down toward the ground. โ€œI need to talk to you.โ€

โ€œDoes it involve more bad news?โ€ I asked, my voice sharper than I had intended.

Rowan flinched but stood his ground. โ€œNo, not bad newsโ€ฆ At least, I hope not.โ€

Lila prodded him forward with her elbow, nudging him onward.

โ€œWeโ€™ve been looking into the contacts that Calla had,โ€ Rowan said, his voice firming up. โ€œLila and I have been researching the archives, hoping weโ€™d find something to help us in strengthening pack defenses.โ€

I crossed my arms, raising an eyebrow. โ€œAnd?โ€

Rowan was slower to continue. โ€œWe found some old maps and documents that suggested Calla may have been in league with a rogue network, working close to our borders.โ€

My eyebrows shot up. โ€œYouโ€™re sure?โ€

Lila spoke this time, her tone even and soothing. โ€œThe evidence is strong, mentioning key locations and names we have heard before.โ€

I watched them closely. Nobody showed hesitation; nobody looked uncertain. โ€œAnd what, precisely, do you plan to do with this information?โ€

Rowan stepped forward. โ€œWe will strategize and use this to protect the pack.โ€

I let out a sigh, my face softening. โ€œYouโ€™re trying to prove yourself to the pack, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œNot just to the pack,โ€ Rowan said, correcting my tone with softness to his voice. โ€œTo myselfโ€ฆ come with us, we will show you in the archives.โ€

My curiosity getting the better of my doubts, I followed them to the archives. The room was covered with aged paper and dust, record after record from battles, alliances, and treasons lining every shelf. Lila and Rowan moved efficiently, their focus in one place, until they stopped.

โ€œHere,โ€ Lila said, pulling out a worn map. โ€œItโ€™s this region; it matched one of the coordinates from the files.โ€

Rowan was leaning over her shoulder, his face darkening. โ€œThis is where sheโ€™s been recruiting,โ€ he muttered.

โ€œRowan,โ€ I said, my voice cutting through their focus. I looked at him, and a glint of pride in his eyes, as though he felt like I would just forget all he had done. I cleared my throat and said, โ€œThis information is well and good, but it doesnโ€™t erase your past. You need to tread carefully.โ€

He looked up, his eyes finding mine. โ€œIโ€™m not trying to erase anything, Luna. Iโ€™m trying to push forward. And maybe, maybe help you do the same.โ€

My breath caught. โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve been shouldering the weight of Daneโ€™s illness and the burdens of the pack alone,โ€ Rowan said, his voice low with sincerity. โ€œThis is me trying to take some of that weight off, even if itโ€™s just a little.โ€

I blinked in surprise. Before I could utter a word, Lila chimed in. โ€œRowanโ€™s coming from a good place, Luna. And this find could prove to be a game changer.โ€

The more they worked, the further back I stepped, watching. There was just this silent understanding between them, a quiet rhythm, almost to how they worked off each other.

โ€œYou two, you donโ€™t even need me in here,โ€ I half-joked, but somehow, the words sliced into a grain of truth.

Rowan turned to me then, his expression unreadable. โ€œWe need you more now than ever, Luna. You have kept us stuck together.โ€

โ€œEven when I feel like Iโ€™m falling apart?โ€ I whispered.

โ€œEspecially then,โ€ Rowan said, his tone unwavering.

I smiled for the first time in what felt like days. โ€œYouโ€™ve changed, Rowan.โ€

โ€œI had to,โ€ he said matter-of-factly.

Well along in the afternoon, Rowan and Lila stumbled upon a piece of paper with a name that stopped my breath. โ€œThis canโ€™t be,โ€ I whispered, eyes glued to the parchment.

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ Lila asked, curious.

I swallowed, my throat tying up in knots. โ€œItโ€™s a name I havenโ€™t seen in years. Someone fromโ€ฆ before Dane and I took over the pack. Someone dangerous.โ€

Rowan leaned in closer. โ€œWho?โ€

I kept mute, staring down at it. It was Rowan who finally broke the silence. โ€œLuna, what does this mean? Who is this person?โ€

I stammered, the words sticking in my throat. โ€œItโ€™s someone I thought Iโ€™d never have to deal with again,โ€ I finally said, much softer than I had meant. โ€œA ghost of our past, one Iโ€™d hoped would never come back.โ€

Lila furrowed a brow, interested. โ€œBut since they have to do with Calla, should we not grab onto that and take advantage of it? Just maybe, thatโ€™s the door we find about whatever she has to do withโ€ฆโ€

I shook my head vigorously, though inside my heart tore in halves. โ€œLater. Dane needs us first. With every hour, he is getting worse and thisโ€ฆโ€ I waved at the paper. โ€œโ€ฆmay wait.โ€

His face was set in a determined expression, with a hint of sympathy and understanding. โ€œAurora, you have carried so much for this pack. You donโ€™t have to do it alone anymore. Let us take this on while you focus on Dane.โ€

I met his gaze, and for the first time in a while, let myself lean into the support he was lending. โ€œYouโ€™ve matured, Rowan,โ€ I said softly. โ€œMaybe I do need your help.โ€

Turning to leave, Rowanโ€™s voice called after me, solid and sure. โ€œWeโ€™ll take care of it, Luna. You have my word.โ€

As I walked back toward the packhouse, that name wouldnโ€™t be shaken from my mind. โ€œThis changes everything,โ€ I muttered, my chest coiling tight with dread. โ€œBut I canโ€™t face it until Dane is safe.โ€

I shook my head. โ€œOnce again, it is not important right now. Daneโ€™s condition takes precedence. We can deal with that once he is stable.โ€
