Chapter 299
Trajan stepped closer, his voice low and deliberate. โThe rival packโs wolves have breached our borders. Scouts spotted them less than a mile from here.โ
My stomach turned. โHow many?โ
โToo many for comfort,โ Trajan replied. โTheyโre testing our defenses, Aurora. This isnโt a full-blown attack yet. But theyโre waiting for something.โ
โWaiting for me to break,โ I muttered under my breath, to nobody in particular.
Daneโs voice, though low and strained, managed to override the tension. โDonโt let them. Youโฆ you canโt give them that satisfaction.โ
I turned to him, still straddling a painful line between despair and determination. โDane, I just canโt lose you,โ I whispered through a cracked voice.
โYou wonโt,โ he managed, his effort draining the color from him.
Trajan cleared his throat, the urgency in his voice slicing through the moment. โAurora, we need to act now. If theyโre this close, we donโt have much time to decide our next move.โ
I nodded, hardening my jaw. โWe wonโt let them win,โ I said firmly, turning to Trajan. โRally the council. We need to prepare for whateverโs coming.โ
As Trajan left, Daneโs eyes found and latched onto mine. โAuroraโฆ promise me something.โ
โWhat?โ I whispered.
โPromise me you wonโt lose yourself in this fight,โ he whispered back.
Tears spilled over as I leaned down, pressing a kiss to his forehead.
โI promise,โ I whispered, really not buying that one bit.
Chapter 300
Auroraโs voice was smooth as she addressed us in her quarters; her eyes turned between Piper and me.
โThis mission is of utmost importance. I need both of you to put aside your personal differences and focus. The pack depends on it.โ Piper crossed her arms over her chest.
Her jaw was tight. โIโve never let my personal feelings get in the way of my duties.โ
Auroraโs lips turned into a knowing smile. โGood. Because this requires your sharp instincts, Piper, and Warrickโs adaptability. Orionโs army has crossed our borders. I want to know why and how far they have gotten.โ
Orionโฆ he was the man that had met me in the woods that day. I am sure he was trying to use my weakness against me. It would have worked. But not anymoreโฆ I have changed.
I looked at Piper, her face unreadable. โWe will do our best,โ I said with certainty.
Aurora walked forward, softening.
โI trust you both, but remember, this isnโt about gathering intelligence; this is about showing the pack that in unity lies our strength. No slip-ups, no risks.โ
Piper nodded sharply. โUnderstood.โ
We moved silently through the dense forest, the only sounds the occasional rustle of leaves and our measured breaths. The tension between us was palpable, but the mission kept us focused.
โYou think theyโre going to attack soon?โ Piper asked, barely above a whisper.
โFrom the way theyโre moving, theyโre looking for a weak point in our defense,โ I said, my eyes circling.
Piper stopped dead, bending low. She moved a thumb toward a small clearing up ahead; the light from a fire danced within it. โThere,โ she whispered.
We moved closer, behind the trees, for cover. The two wolves sat by the fire, and their voices, though low, were clear enough.
โThey are scattered,โ one said. โTheir focus is torn between defending the borders and attending to their ailing leader.โ The other snorted. โThe timing couldnโt get any better. Divide them further, and they fall.โ
Pivoting at her hips, Piperโs fists were clenched at her sides, and I laid a hand on her arm.
โDistant,โ I whispered.
โTheyโre planning on using us,โ she spat the word barely contained. โWe canโt just stand here.โ
โWeโre here for information, not to fight,โ I reminded her. โLetโs do our job.โ
She nodded, but her gaze stayed fierce on the wolves.
As we drew back from the clearing, Piper finally spoke, her voice tight. โThey think weโre weak. Theyโre wrong.โ
I turned to her, a small smile pulling at my lips. โYou always did have a way of turning anger into determination.โ
She shot me a look. โDonโt start.โ
โI mean it,โ I said, softer. โYour instincts are sharp. And I know I havenโt always appreciated that. But I do now.โ
Piperโs steps faltered for a moment. โWhatโs that supposed to mean?โ
I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. โIโve made mistakes. Big ones. Iโve let my ego get in the way, and itโs hurt you. Iโm sorry for that.โ
For a moment, she was silent, her expression unreadable. Then, her shoulders relaxed slightly.
โApologies are easy. Change is harder.โ
โI know,โ I said, turning to her. โAnd Iโm trying. You deserve better.โ
We walked further away from camp, then Piper suddenly froze, staring at something half-buried in the dirt. โWhatโs that?โ
I knelt next to her and brushed the loose dirt away. Whatever it was, it gleamed in the moonlightโa dagger, the handle carved all over with signs and symbols.
Piper gasped. โIโve seen this before.โ
I frowned, turning the weapon over in my hands. โWhere?โ
โItโs from Callaโs network,โ she said, her tone laced with unease. โThese symbols were in the archives Rowan and Lila mentioned.โ
A chill ran down my spine. โThen this isnโt just about Orionโs pack. Callaโs influence might be deeper than we thought.โ
Piper straightened, her face hardening. โWe need to tell Aurora. Now.โ
Piper and I were standing in Auroraโs quarters, the dagger lying on the table between us. Auroraโs fingers hovered over the intricate symbols on the handle as her face twitched in confusion.
โThis daggerโฆโ she started, her voice trailing off as she turned it over in her hands. โThese markingsโฆ are you absolutely certain theyโre linked to Calla?โ
Piper nodded, her tone level. โRowan and Lila found similar symbols in the archives. Theyโre linked to Callaโs network. This isnโt a coincidence.โ
Auroraโs jaw clamped tight as she studied the weapon. โIf this is Callaโs network, then this is more than the Orionโs pack. They are working in concert to take us apart from within.โ
I swallowed as my discomfort floated to the top of the cauldron of my anxiety. โIf these are aligned, then this was a plan concocted well in advance. This explains why Orion is confident.โ
Piper crossed her arms over her chest, a stance unmistakable for defense. โWe have to strike first, Aurora. Theyโre relying on us being uncertain and divisive.โ
Aurora shook her head, pacing around the room. โStrike impulsively, it is exactly what theyโre expecting, thus giving them their excuse to attack.โ
Her voice sharpened. โAnd so weโre just going to sit around and let them pick away?โ
โNo,โ Aurora said firmly, wheeling on us. โWe prepare. Every patrol will be doubled, every scout will have strict orders to report even the smallest movement. I will not let them catch us off guard.โ
The air was thick with tension between Piper and me as our eyes met. Finally, my voice came low. โWhat about this dagger? Shouldnโt we show it to the council? They need to know what weโre up against.โ
Aurora looked caught off guard; the weight of her leadership shone in her eyes. โNot yet. If we show this now, it may cause panic. We need more information before we act.โ
Piper stepped forward, undaunted. โAurora, every minute we waste gives them an edge. The pack should know whatโs going on.โ
The ice in Auroraโs voice began to melt, though her firm stance did not waver. โI understand your frustration, Piper, but trust me on this. The truth will come out, but only when weโre ready to act on it.โ
Piper let out a sharp sigh; she was unhappy, yet said nothing more.
In the dead silence, Aurora looked at the dagger for the last time, the skin on her fingers barely touching the cold metal. โItโs different now,โ she whispered low.
The gleam was soft as her eyes raised to ours, in which determination fluttered to life.
โWeโre no longer protecting only our pack. Weโve unraveled all their webs now. And we cannot afford to lose this one.โ
