Chapter 299

Trajan stepped closer, his voice low and deliberate. โ€œThe rival packโ€™s wolves have breached our borders. Scouts spotted them less than a mile from here.โ€

My stomach turned. โ€œHow many?โ€

โ€œToo many for comfort,โ€ Trajan replied. โ€œTheyโ€™re testing our defenses, Aurora. This isnโ€™t a full-blown attack yet. But theyโ€™re waiting for something.โ€

โ€œWaiting for me to break,โ€ I muttered under my breath, to nobody in particular.

Daneโ€™s voice, though low and strained, managed to override the tension. โ€œDonโ€™t let them. Youโ€ฆ you canโ€™t give them that satisfaction.โ€

I turned to him, still straddling a painful line between despair and determination. โ€œDane, I just canโ€™t lose you,โ€ I whispered through a cracked voice.

โ€œYou wonโ€™t,โ€ he managed, his effort draining the color from him.

Trajan cleared his throat, the urgency in his voice slicing through the moment. โ€œAurora, we need to act now. If theyโ€™re this close, we donโ€™t have much time to decide our next move.โ€

I nodded, hardening my jaw. โ€œWe wonโ€™t let them win,โ€ I said firmly, turning to Trajan. โ€œRally the council. We need to prepare for whateverโ€™s coming.โ€

As Trajan left, Daneโ€™s eyes found and latched onto mine. โ€œAuroraโ€ฆ promise me something.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I whispered.

โ€œPromise me you wonโ€™t lose yourself in this fight,โ€ he whispered back.

Tears spilled over as I leaned down, pressing a kiss to his forehead.

โ€œI promise,โ€ I whispered, really not buying that one bit.

Chapter 300

Auroraโ€™s voice was smooth as she addressed us in her quarters; her eyes turned between Piper and me.

โ€œThis mission is of utmost importance. I need both of you to put aside your personal differences and focus. The pack depends on it.โ€ Piper crossed her arms over her chest.

Her jaw was tight. โ€œIโ€™ve never let my personal feelings get in the way of my duties.โ€

Auroraโ€™s lips turned into a knowing smile. โ€œGood. Because this requires your sharp instincts, Piper, and Warrickโ€™s adaptability. Orionโ€™s army has crossed our borders. I want to know why and how far they have gotten.โ€

Orionโ€ฆ he was the man that had met me in the woods that day. I am sure he was trying to use my weakness against me. It would have worked. But not anymoreโ€ฆ I have changed.

I looked at Piper, her face unreadable. โ€œWe will do our best,โ€ I said with certainty.

Aurora walked forward, softening.

โ€œI trust you both, but remember, this isnโ€™t about gathering intelligence; this is about showing the pack that in unity lies our strength. No slip-ups, no risks.โ€

Piper nodded sharply. โ€œUnderstood.โ€

We moved silently through the dense forest, the only sounds the occasional rustle of leaves and our measured breaths. The tension between us was palpable, but the mission kept us focused.

โ€œYou think theyโ€™re going to attack soon?โ€ Piper asked, barely above a whisper.

โ€œFrom the way theyโ€™re moving, theyโ€™re looking for a weak point in our defense,โ€ I said, my eyes circling.

Piper stopped dead, bending low. She moved a thumb toward a small clearing up ahead; the light from a fire danced within it. โ€œThere,โ€ she whispered.

We moved closer, behind the trees, for cover. The two wolves sat by the fire, and their voices, though low, were clear enough.

โ€œThey are scattered,โ€ one said. โ€œTheir focus is torn between defending the borders and attending to their ailing leader.โ€ The other snorted. โ€œThe timing couldnโ€™t get any better. Divide them further, and they fall.โ€

Pivoting at her hips, Piperโ€™s fists were clenched at her sides, and I laid a hand on her arm.

โ€œDistant,โ€ I whispered.

โ€œTheyโ€™re planning on using us,โ€ she spat the word barely contained. โ€œWe canโ€™t just stand here.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re here for information, not to fight,โ€ I reminded her. โ€œLetโ€™s do our job.โ€

She nodded, but her gaze stayed fierce on the wolves.

As we drew back from the clearing, Piper finally spoke, her voice tight. โ€œThey think weโ€™re weak. Theyโ€™re wrong.โ€

I turned to her, a small smile pulling at my lips. โ€œYou always did have a way of turning anger into determination.โ€

She shot me a look. โ€œDonโ€™t start.โ€

โ€œI mean it,โ€ I said, softer. โ€œYour instincts are sharp. And I know I havenโ€™t always appreciated that. But I do now.โ€

Piperโ€™s steps faltered for a moment. โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. โ€œIโ€™ve made mistakes. Big ones. Iโ€™ve let my ego get in the way, and itโ€™s hurt you. Iโ€™m sorry for that.โ€

For a moment, she was silent, her expression unreadable. Then, her shoulders relaxed slightly.

โ€œApologies are easy. Change is harder.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ I said, turning to her. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m trying. You deserve better.โ€

We walked further away from camp, then Piper suddenly froze, staring at something half-buried in the dirt. โ€œWhatโ€™s that?โ€

I knelt next to her and brushed the loose dirt away. Whatever it was, it gleamed in the moonlightโ€”a dagger, the handle carved all over with signs and symbols.

Piper gasped. โ€œIโ€™ve seen this before.โ€

I frowned, turning the weapon over in my hands. โ€œWhere?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s from Callaโ€™s network,โ€ she said, her tone laced with unease. โ€œThese symbols were in the archives Rowan and Lila mentioned.โ€

A chill ran down my spine. โ€œThen this isnโ€™t just about Orionโ€™s pack. Callaโ€™s influence might be deeper than we thought.โ€

Piper straightened, her face hardening. โ€œWe need to tell Aurora. Now.โ€

Piper and I were standing in Auroraโ€™s quarters, the dagger lying on the table between us. Auroraโ€™s fingers hovered over the intricate symbols on the handle as her face twitched in confusion.

โ€œThis daggerโ€ฆโ€ she started, her voice trailing off as she turned it over in her hands. โ€œThese markingsโ€ฆ are you absolutely certain theyโ€™re linked to Calla?โ€

Piper nodded, her tone level. โ€œRowan and Lila found similar symbols in the archives. Theyโ€™re linked to Callaโ€™s network. This isnโ€™t a coincidence.โ€

Auroraโ€™s jaw clamped tight as she studied the weapon. โ€œIf this is Callaโ€™s network, then this is more than the Orionโ€™s pack. They are working in concert to take us apart from within.โ€

I swallowed as my discomfort floated to the top of the cauldron of my anxiety. โ€œIf these are aligned, then this was a plan concocted well in advance. This explains why Orion is confident.โ€

Piper crossed her arms over her chest, a stance unmistakable for defense. โ€œWe have to strike first, Aurora. Theyโ€™re relying on us being uncertain and divisive.โ€

Aurora shook her head, pacing around the room. โ€œStrike impulsively, it is exactly what theyโ€™re expecting, thus giving them their excuse to attack.โ€

Her voice sharpened. โ€œAnd so weโ€™re just going to sit around and let them pick away?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Aurora said firmly, wheeling on us. โ€œWe prepare. Every patrol will be doubled, every scout will have strict orders to report even the smallest movement. I will not let them catch us off guard.โ€

The air was thick with tension between Piper and me as our eyes met. Finally, my voice came low. โ€œWhat about this dagger? Shouldnโ€™t we show it to the council? They need to know what weโ€™re up against.โ€

Aurora looked caught off guard; the weight of her leadership shone in her eyes. โ€œNot yet. If we show this now, it may cause panic. We need more information before we act.โ€

Piper stepped forward, undaunted. โ€œAurora, every minute we waste gives them an edge. The pack should know whatโ€™s going on.โ€

The ice in Auroraโ€™s voice began to melt, though her firm stance did not waver. โ€œI understand your frustration, Piper, but trust me on this. The truth will come out, but only when weโ€™re ready to act on it.โ€

Piper let out a sharp sigh; she was unhappy, yet said nothing more.

In the dead silence, Aurora looked at the dagger for the last time, the skin on her fingers barely touching the cold metal. โ€œItโ€™s different now,โ€ she whispered low.

The gleam was soft as her eyes raised to ours, in which determination fluttered to life.

โ€œWeโ€™re no longer protecting only our pack. Weโ€™ve unraveled all their webs now. And we cannot afford to lose this one.โ€
