Chapter 302

The sun had barely cleared the horizon when a breathless Raven burst into the packhouse, his expression grave.

โ€œLuna Aurora,โ€ he began, his voice strained. โ€œNews from Orionโ€™s pack.โ€

I straightened, my pulse quickening. โ€œWhat is it?โ€

He paused, glancing at the council chamber. โ€œTheyโ€™ve issued an ultimatum. Theyโ€™ll withdraw their forces only if Alpha Dane submits to Kaidaโ€™s demands.โ€

I clenched my fists, nearly breaking my palms. The morningโ€™s warmth hadnโ€™t reached the room, but I felt a surge of anger and helplessness. โ€œThatโ€™s all? Have you heard more?โ€

The scout swallowed hard. โ€œTheyโ€™ve given us until dawn tomorrow. No response, and theyโ€™ll take what they want by force.โ€

I nodded and headed to the council chamber. The council was already assembled. Piper and Warrick sat at opposite ends of the table, tension etched on their faces, mirroring the atmosphere. Trajan and Evelyn stood by the map, his arms folded.

โ€œWhat do you mean, an ultimatum?โ€ Piper asked, after I relayed the scoutโ€™s message. โ€œโ€˜Submit to their termsโ€™? That sounds like a trap.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not a trap,โ€ Evelyn said calmly but firmly. โ€œItโ€™s a show of dominance. They want us to surrender, simply.โ€

โ€œAnd you think we should?โ€ Warrick retorted incredulously, his disbelief evident.

โ€œNo,โ€ Trajan said, his gaze unwavering. โ€œBut we must consider the consequences of refusal.โ€

I slapped the table, silencing their bickering. โ€œEnough!โ€ I said sharply. โ€œWe havenโ€™t time for this. Dane is fighting for his life, and our entire pack is at stake.โ€

โ€œWell, what do you propose?โ€ Piper asked defensively. โ€œYouโ€™ve been rather quiet on the subject of a plan.โ€

โ€œWe stand our ground,โ€ I said firmly. โ€œWeโ€™ve faced worse. Surrender now, and weโ€™ll never regain our strength or dignity.โ€

Trajan stepped forward. โ€œAurora is right. Negotiationโ€™s a gamble, but submission will destroy us. We need a strategic approach.โ€

The tension eased slightly, but uncertainty remained.

Later, I checked on Dane. He was pale, his breathing shallow.

โ€œThey want you to surrender,โ€ I said, my voice trembling. โ€œBut I wonโ€™t let them take you from me.โ€

He squeezed my hand weakly. โ€œAurora, donโ€™t let them break us.โ€

โ€œI promiseโ€ฆ I will try,โ€ I said, but looking at Dane, my heart sank. I doubted he could hear me; his eyes were closed, and he was motionless.

I sighed and returned to the council room. Raven burst in again, his face ashen and slick with sweat. He panted, his wide eyes scanning the room, seeking reassurance.

โ€œLuna!โ€ he gasped, his voice desperate. โ€œThe rival packโ€™s forces are across our border! Theyโ€™re moving into the packhouse!โ€

Silence fell, the weight of his words heavy in the room. Then, chaos erupted.

Trajan leaped to his feet, his chair scraping the floor. โ€œPiper, get the younger werewolves to safety! Warrick, secure the eastern perimeter!โ€ His voice cut through the rising panic.

Piper nodded, her jaw clenched. โ€œOn it!โ€ She grabbed Warrickโ€™s arm. โ€œEveryone ready. No excuses!โ€

โ€œGot it,โ€ Warrick said, his voice steady despite the tension.

I remained still, Ravenโ€™s words echoing in my head. My body yearned for action, but a brief moment of responsibility weighed heavily upon me.

โ€œLuna, your orders?โ€ Evelynโ€™s voice broke through, her piercing gaze meeting mine.

I took a deep breath, quelling the panic.

โ€œWeโ€™ll stop them,โ€ I declared, my voice cutting through the noise. Silence fell again; all eyes were on me. โ€œBut we fight on our terms.โ€

โ€œDo we even have terms anymore?โ€ a council member muttered, but I ignored him.

Turning to Trajan, with Evelyn beside him, I said, โ€œGather the scouts who know the forest best. Weโ€™ll use the terrain. I want choke points identified, traps set, every advantage exploited.โ€

Trajan inclined his head. โ€œConsider it done.โ€

โ€œEvelyn,โ€ I continued firmly, โ€œcoordinate the defensive lines. I need this pack ready for anything. If they reach the packhouse, theyโ€™ll regret it.โ€

Evelyn met my gaze; her determination spoke volumes. โ€œWeโ€™re holding the line, Luna. Count on it.โ€

The council members dispersed. I turned to Raven. โ€œHow many did you see?โ€

โ€œToo many,โ€ he said, his voice cracking. โ€œTheyโ€™re armed and moving fast.โ€

I placed a steadying hand on his shoulder. โ€œYouโ€™ve done well. Rest now. Weโ€™ll handle this.โ€

Exiting the council chamber into the night, the cold air was sharp and sobering. The distant stars remained unconcerned spectators to the brewing storm. One thought held firm in my mind as I joined the preparations: I would not let them ruin everything weโ€™d built.
