Chapter 302
The sun had barely cleared the horizon when a breathless Raven burst into the packhouse, his expression grave.
โLuna Aurora,โ he began, his voice strained. โNews from Orionโs pack.โ
I straightened, my pulse quickening. โWhat is it?โ
He paused, glancing at the council chamber. โTheyโve issued an ultimatum. Theyโll withdraw their forces only if Alpha Dane submits to Kaidaโs demands.โ
I clenched my fists, nearly breaking my palms. The morningโs warmth hadnโt reached the room, but I felt a surge of anger and helplessness. โThatโs all? Have you heard more?โ
The scout swallowed hard. โTheyโve given us until dawn tomorrow. No response, and theyโll take what they want by force.โ
I nodded and headed to the council chamber. The council was already assembled. Piper and Warrick sat at opposite ends of the table, tension etched on their faces, mirroring the atmosphere. Trajan and Evelyn stood by the map, his arms folded.
โWhat do you mean, an ultimatum?โ Piper asked, after I relayed the scoutโs message. โโSubmit to their termsโ? That sounds like a trap.โ
โItโs not a trap,โ Evelyn said calmly but firmly. โItโs a show of dominance. They want us to surrender, simply.โ
โAnd you think we should?โ Warrick retorted incredulously, his disbelief evident.
โNo,โ Trajan said, his gaze unwavering. โBut we must consider the consequences of refusal.โ
I slapped the table, silencing their bickering. โEnough!โ I said sharply. โWe havenโt time for this. Dane is fighting for his life, and our entire pack is at stake.โ
โWell, what do you propose?โ Piper asked defensively. โYouโve been rather quiet on the subject of a plan.โ
โWe stand our ground,โ I said firmly. โWeโve faced worse. Surrender now, and weโll never regain our strength or dignity.โ
Trajan stepped forward. โAurora is right. Negotiationโs a gamble, but submission will destroy us. We need a strategic approach.โ
The tension eased slightly, but uncertainty remained.
Later, I checked on Dane. He was pale, his breathing shallow.
โThey want you to surrender,โ I said, my voice trembling. โBut I wonโt let them take you from me.โ
He squeezed my hand weakly. โAurora, donโt let them break us.โ
โI promiseโฆ I will try,โ I said, but looking at Dane, my heart sank. I doubted he could hear me; his eyes were closed, and he was motionless.
I sighed and returned to the council room. Raven burst in again, his face ashen and slick with sweat. He panted, his wide eyes scanning the room, seeking reassurance.
โLuna!โ he gasped, his voice desperate. โThe rival packโs forces are across our border! Theyโre moving into the packhouse!โ
Silence fell, the weight of his words heavy in the room. Then, chaos erupted.
Trajan leaped to his feet, his chair scraping the floor. โPiper, get the younger werewolves to safety! Warrick, secure the eastern perimeter!โ His voice cut through the rising panic.
Piper nodded, her jaw clenched. โOn it!โ She grabbed Warrickโs arm. โEveryone ready. No excuses!โ
โGot it,โ Warrick said, his voice steady despite the tension.
I remained still, Ravenโs words echoing in my head. My body yearned for action, but a brief moment of responsibility weighed heavily upon me.
โLuna, your orders?โ Evelynโs voice broke through, her piercing gaze meeting mine.
I took a deep breath, quelling the panic.
โWeโll stop them,โ I declared, my voice cutting through the noise. Silence fell again; all eyes were on me. โBut we fight on our terms.โ
โDo we even have terms anymore?โ a council member muttered, but I ignored him.
Turning to Trajan, with Evelyn beside him, I said, โGather the scouts who know the forest best. Weโll use the terrain. I want choke points identified, traps set, every advantage exploited.โ
Trajan inclined his head. โConsider it done.โ
โEvelyn,โ I continued firmly, โcoordinate the defensive lines. I need this pack ready for anything. If they reach the packhouse, theyโll regret it.โ
Evelyn met my gaze; her determination spoke volumes. โWeโre holding the line, Luna. Count on it.โ
The council members dispersed. I turned to Raven. โHow many did you see?โ
โToo many,โ he said, his voice cracking. โTheyโre armed and moving fast.โ
I placed a steadying hand on his shoulder. โYouโve done well. Rest now. Weโll handle this.โ
Exiting the council chamber into the night, the cold air was sharp and sobering. The distant stars remained unconcerned spectators to the brewing storm. One thought held firm in my mind as I joined the preparations: I would not let them ruin everything weโd built.
