Chapter 304

I longed for his assistance.

I turned and watched my men retreat down the hills. Joining them, I walked to the pack house, proceeding directly to my office. Upon entering, I saw Piper inside.

Piper was pacing, her rapid movements betraying the bitterness she felt. I could sense it, even from a distance.

โ€œOur pack members live in fear; they jump at every sound. Theyโ€™re crumbling under their own anxieties,โ€ Piper said, flinging her hands up, her desperation palpable.

I nodded thoughtfully, walking to my chair and sitting down. โ€œUnderstandable, given recent events, but we can't have them being so defiantโ€ฆ but I trust you can manage them, right?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s the problem!โ€ Piper exclaimed, her voice rising. โ€œWarrick, whom I expected to help, keeps trivializing everythingโ€”making light of it, joking, as if he doesn't grasp the gravity of the situation!โ€

But Warrick interrupted before she could continue, a faint smirk playing on his lips. โ€œI'm right here, you know.โ€

โ€œI want you to listen,โ€ Piper growled, circling him, her eyes blazing. โ€œThis isn't a game, Warrick. Stop acting like it is.โ€

His smirk vanished, his brow furrowing defensively. โ€œIโ€™m trying to prevent them from completely unraveling. If theyโ€™re scared, theyโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAnd if they think itโ€™s all a joke, they wonโ€™t take it seriously!โ€ Piper retorted.

I raised my hand, my voice firm. โ€œEnough, both of you. This isnโ€™t the time for arguments. We have more pressing issues to address.โ€

With a frustrated slump of his shoulders, Warrick stormed out. Piper sank into a chair opposite me, releasing a slow breath.

โ€œI donโ€™t know how much more of this I can handle,โ€ she admitted, her voice softer now.

My eyes softened. โ€œItโ€™s difficult,โ€ I said. โ€œI know. But we all experience doubt at some point. I do, too.โ€

Piper stared back. โ€œYou? But youโ€™re always so strong.โ€

I smiled. โ€œYou think I donโ€™t feel the weight of this? Dane barely clinging to life, our rivals on our heels, the pack awaiting answers from me. Iโ€™m not always strong; sometimes I feel like Iโ€™m failing.โ€

Piper relaxed. โ€œYouโ€™re not failing, Aurora. Youโ€™re holding us together.โ€

โ€œAnd so are you,โ€ I said, placing a comforting hand on her arm. โ€œDonโ€™t undervalue your role in this pack. They look up to you, even when it feels like no one does.โ€

Their conversation was interrupted as the door creaked open again. Warrick stood in the doorway, his face tense. โ€œAurora,โ€ he began, his voice uncertain. โ€œI need your help.โ€

I looked up at Piper, then stood. โ€œWhat is it?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s about Piper,โ€ Warrick said, looking at her. โ€œI know I messed up. I know I hurt her. But Iโ€™ve been trying to make amends, and she wonโ€™t give me a chance. Can you help her see that Iโ€™ve changed?โ€

Piperโ€™s face was impassive as she crossed her arms.

โ€œYou think this is about change? You think a few apologies erase everything?โ€

Warrick took a step forward, his voice rising. โ€œNo, I donโ€™t. But Iโ€™m trying, Piper! And instead of talking to me, youโ€™re confiding in everyone else. Do you have any idea how that feels?โ€

I positioned myself between them, my voice conveying both understanding and authority. โ€œThatโ€™s enough.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not doing this for you, for her, or anyone,โ€ Piper shook her head and stepped forward, her gaze unwavering. โ€œYou never understand, Warrick. Itโ€™s not about what youโ€™ve done, but how I feel about you now.โ€

Warrickโ€™s voice broke, a husky question cracking through. โ€œHowโ€ฆ how do you feel?โ€

Piper said nothing. Her lips were thin and tight. โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

Warrick threw up his hands and walked away. โ€œFine. When you figure it out, let me know.โ€ He left, leaving Piper and me in heavy silence.

Chapter 304

Later that night, Piper and I were at the edge of the pack house.

The forest was quiet except for the rustling of leaves underfoot and a distant owlโ€™s hoot.

Piper froze, her body instantly rigid. โ€œAurora,โ€ she breathed, pointing.

Through the darkness, wolves were lying low, their eyes glowing in the moonlight. The pale light glinted off blades and arrows.

I gasped. โ€œKaidaโ€™s army,โ€ I whispered.

Piper nodded sharply. โ€œWhat do we do?โ€

โ€œWe havenโ€™t attacked yet,โ€ I said, pulling Piper behind a tree. โ€œWe need to know their numbers and plans.โ€

We strained to hear the scoutsโ€™ hushed whispers, piecing together fragments of their conversation.

โ€œThe packโ€™s weaker than we thought.โ€

โ€œYeah, good. Orion wants us to exploit that. Go for the young wolves; theyโ€™ll break first.โ€

Rage surged through Piper as my fists clenched inside my fur-lined gloves. โ€œHow about we go up there and take them out?โ€

I restrained Piper. โ€œNoโ€ฆ go get Evelyn and Trajan; we need as many eyes as possible while we scout and assess the situation.โ€

Chapter 304

I crouched low, keeping my eyes on the men around the campfire, observing them intently. I noticed several women in burqas serving them. They were drinking wine and eating roasted meat. I licked my lips, realizing I hadnโ€™t eaten all day. My stomach rumbled, and I slowly stood, carefully backing away.

I would wait for the others at a safe distance.

SNAPโ€ฆ

My foot snapped a dry twig. I looked up to see two of the soldiers looking in my direction.

โ€œWhoโ€™s there?โ€ one asked, rising, hand on his sword. โ€œIโ€™ll check it out,โ€ he said to his companion, tapping his shoulder.

He advanced toward me, and I froze, holding my breath.
