Listen to this chapter:

โ€œMaybe she isnโ€™t the problem at all; sheโ€™s the keyโ€ฆ she started all of this,โ€ I said. An evil grin spread across my lips. โ€œI will make her end it.โ€

I knew Orionโ€™s army had fallen. I knew I had decimated half of his forces. I sat down, smiling as I recalled how Iโ€™d snuck into a merchantโ€™s cart and easily passed through the packโ€™s gates. Iโ€™d rolled out and bruised my arm, but the pain was nothing; my mission was a success. Now, I had to address the problems within my own pack. I summoned Rowan and seated him.

โ€œThat symbol Piper found,โ€ I said, leaning forward, โ€œisnโ€™t random. I know itโ€™s connected to something dangerous. I need you to find out what it is.โ€

Rowan, still slightly uneasy around me, nodded. โ€œIโ€™ll look through the archives. Iโ€™ll find something.โ€

โ€œTake Piper,โ€ I suggested. โ€œShe has an eye for detail.โ€

Rowan hesitated, his jaw tightening. โ€œNo offense, but Iโ€™d rather work with someone who wonโ€™t start another argument with me.โ€

I sighed, understanding his desire to avoid Warrickโ€™s volatile nature. Rubbing my head, I asked, โ€œLila, then?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Rowan replied instantly. โ€œLila.โ€

After several hours, Rowan and Lila returned, explaining their findings from their late-night delve into the dusty archives. โ€œAfter hours of searching, I finally found a tattered record with the same symbol as the dagger,โ€ Rowan announced.

I raised an eyebrow, listening intently. โ€œWell, here!โ€ he exclaimed, holding it up. I leaned over, reading the faded text. โ€œCalla had a rogue network, and it seems Orionโ€™s pack used her channels to gather intelligence and destabilize nearby packs.โ€

Lilaโ€™s voice dropped. โ€œThey exploited weaknesses, internal conflicts, and strained leadership. This is exactly whatโ€™s happening to us.โ€

Rowanโ€™s fists clenched. โ€œItโ€™s obvious. Theyโ€™re trying to break us from within, just like Alina did.โ€

Her name hung heavy in the air, a bitter memory. โ€œShe was working with them all along, wasnโ€™t she?โ€ Lila asked softly.

โ€œIt makes sense,โ€ Rowan said. โ€œAlina wanted power. Calla wanted control. And Orion? Heโ€™s finishing what they started.โ€

I listened, my heart sinking, remaining silent. The picture was clear: Orionโ€™s pack was systematically dismantling our unity, exploiting every fracture in our foundation.

โ€œWe need to dig deeper,โ€ I said firmly. โ€œI want every loose end tied up. Every ally, every enemy, every opportunity found.โ€

Rowan and Lila nodded, their determination evident.

Tears streamed down my cheeks as I watched him sleep; I didnโ€™t even realize when I drifted off myself.

The pale dawn light filtering through the curtains woke me. My hand instinctively reached for Daneโ€™s warmth, only to find a cool, empty sheet. That jolted me fully awake. โ€œDane?โ€ I called softly, sitting up and scanning the room. The silence was unnerving.

Putting on my robe, I rushed to the door, my heart pounding. The packhouse buzzed with chaotic energyโ€”shouts and hurried footsteps. My unease intensified as I entered the hall.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Dane?โ€ I asked the first guard I saw.

The guard, wide-eyed and tense, stuttered, โ€œI donโ€™t know, Luna. But somethingโ€™s happening near the main gates.โ€

Before I could question him further, a loud voice boomed from below. โ€œLuna! Get down here!โ€

I ran downstairs, my mind racing. Rowan waited at the bottom, his face pale but resolute. โ€œItโ€™s Dane,โ€ he said, his grip firm on my arm.

My stomach churned. โ€œWhat do you mean? Where is he?โ€

He gestured toward the gates, where a small crowd had gathered. โ€œHeโ€™s not in the packhouse, and thereโ€™s been activity. The guards spotted something.โ€

I pushed past him, my heart racing. Outside, the crisp morning air, which should have been refreshing, only heightened the sense of foreboding. Trajan met me halfway, his face somber.

โ€œWhatโ€™s happening?โ€ I asked.

Trajan sighed deeply. โ€œThe gates were slightly ajar this morning. One of the guards swore he saw Dane leaving before dawn, butโ€ฆโ€

My breath hitched. โ€œBut what?โ€

Rowan stepped forward, holding a crumpled piece of paper. โ€œWe found this near the gate. Itโ€™s from him.โ€

I snatched it from his hand, my fingers trembling as I unfolded it. The scrawled words chilled me to the bone: I canโ€™t let this go on. Iโ€™ll find a way for myself.

โ€œWhat does he mean?โ€ I whispered, clutching the note.

โ€œHeโ€™s gone,โ€ Trajan said quietly.

โ€œNo,โ€ I said vehemently, shaking my head. โ€œHeโ€™s too weak; he wonโ€™t survive out there!โ€

Rowan placed a steadying hand on my shoulder. โ€œLuna, what are we going to do?โ€

My voice was a near whisper, yet firm with resolve. โ€œWe find him. Now.โ€
