Chapter 312
The air in the holding cell was thick, like damp stone and tension pressing on my chest. She sat restrained but poised, her confidence unshaken by the chains. Her piercing gaze was locked on me, and I couldn't ignore how she carried herself, even in defeat. A smirk played on her lips, and I couldn't deny her beauty. Her curves, her confidenceโall of it exuded a power I didn't want to acknowledge. For a brief second, jealousy tugged at my heartโa ridiculous, unwelcome emotion.
โYou think youโve won?โ she sneered, cocking her head. โI hold more power than you realize.โ
I straightened my shoulders, keeping my face neutral.
โAnd what would that power be? Your tricks didnโt save you, Kaida. What makes you think theyโll work now?โ
She laughed, the sound low and mocking. โOh, Luna, you underestimate me. Itโs almost sweet.โ
I took another step forward, the flickering torchlight highlighting her features. โIf youโve got something to say, say it. Otherwise, spare me the stories.โ
Dane held my arm. โLeave, Aurora. I will settle this.โ
I furrowed my brow. โNo, Daneโฆ you leave. I will handle the scheming woman who wants my husband.โ
Dane exhaled sharply, gritting his teeth, and without a word, he stormed away. I knew he would be mad, but I didn't want to see him near Kaidaโฆ It ignited something inside me.
Kaida leaned back, chains clinking softly. โAll right, hereโs the deal: Iโll tell you everything you want to know about Orion, his plans, his weaknesses, everything. Butโโ
I crossed my arms, my patience running thin. โBut what?โ
Her smirk widened. โI want my freedom. Release me, and the information is yours.โ
I studied her, searching for deceit. โWhy should I trust anything you say? For all I know, this is another one of your games.โ
Kaidaโs eyes flashed with humor and irritation. โYou donโt have to trust me. But consider it: what have you got to lose? Your mate is just recovering, your pack is divided, and Orion may attack again. Desperation doesnโt suit you, Luna.โ
Her words cut deeper than I cared to admit. โWhat is stopping me from forcing the truth out of you?โ
She giggled low in her throat. โBecause youโre too smart for that. Torture wonโt get you anywhere, and you know it. Iโm your best hope of staying ahead of Orion. You canโt afford to waste that.โ
I clenched my fists as the weight of her proposition pressed down on me. โEven assuming I was inclined, why would you betray Orion?โ
Her expression shifted, something flickering beneath the surface. โLetโs just say my loyalty to him isnโt as strong as he thinks it is. Besides, I have my own interests to protect.โ
Her casual manipulation made my anger flare, but I kept my cool. โYouโve given me a lot to think about, Kaida. But donโt think for even one second that Iโll release you without proof of your sincerity.โ
She shrugged. โTake your time, Luna. But remember, the clock is ticking.โ
As I turned to leave, her low, venomous voice stopped me. โTick tock, Luna,โ she drawled, her tone mocking yet chilling. โThe more time you waste, the more lives you gamble with. And when you fail, as you inevitably will, theyโll turn on you. Even Dane.โ
My body went rigid, and I turned slowly, my eyes fixed on her. โDane?โ I said, my tone neutral, my chest tightening at the insinuation.
Kaida inclined her head, chains rattling. โAh, yes. Your determined, stubborn mate. Will he stand by you when he discovers the depth of your sacrifices? Or has he already started to doubt?โ
I crossed my arms, disguising the sting of her words with a calmness I didnโt feel. โYour attempts to sow doubt in me wonโt work.โ
She smirked, tilting her head. โI donโt need to sow, Luna. The seeds are already there. Iโm just watering them. Tell me, when was the last time Dane actually looked at you as his equal and not someone holding him back?โ
โEnough.โ My voice was sharper than intended, and I saw satisfaction flicker in her eyes. โYou donโt know anything about him or us.โ
Kaidaโs laughter was soft, almost pitiful. โYouโre right, I donโt know him like you do. But Iโve seen his type. Proud. Reckless. And desperate. Desperate wolves do dangerous things, Luna. You might want to think about that.โ
My fists clenched, and I took a deliberate step closer. โYouโre good with words, Kaida. Iโll give you that. But words wonโt save you from your position.โ
She raised a brow, her confidence unwavering. โPerhaps not. But theyโve made you pause, havenโt they?โ
I hated the truth in her observation, forcing myself to back off.
โEnjoy your cell while it lasts,โ I said icily.
She delivered one final blow. โTick tock, Luna. It isnโt just Dane that the clockโs ticking for.โ
I felt those words haunt me as I walked out of the cell. Trajan waited outside, his face tense with concern.
โWhat happened there?โ he asked, worry lacing his tone.
โSheโs trying to play mind games,โ I said, pushing past him. โBut she doesnโt know me.โ
โAre you so sure?โ he asked again.
I looked at him. โI have no room for doubt, Trajan. We donโt have time.โ
Yet, as I turned and walked away, Kaidaโs words had taken root, stirring within me. Tick tock.
