Chapter 341: Aurora

โ€œEnough of thisโ€ฆ I canโ€™t take it anymore,โ€ Piper said, turning to Alina. โ€œYou say youโ€™re pregnant with Warrickโ€™s child?โ€

Alina nodded. โ€œYes, I am.โ€

Warrick took Piperโ€™s hand and knelt. โ€œPiperโ€ฆ please believe meโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve never had sex with Alina.โ€

โ€œShut up!โ€ Piper yelled, and Alina looked down, smiling.

I shook my head. Piper, donโ€™t do this; youโ€™re making a mistake trusting Alina.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to hear anything you have to sayโ€ฆ because I know the truth,โ€ Piper declared. Everyone fell silent, waiting.

โ€œPiperโ€ฆ youโ€ฆโ€ I began, but she raised her hand, silencing me.

Piper closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and said, โ€œLike I said, I know the truth. Of these two, one is telling the truth, and one is lyingโ€ฆ and Warrick is the one tellingโ€ฆโ€

She paused, locking eyes with Warrick. He swallowed, awaiting her verdict, as if she were the judge.

โ€œWarrick is telling the truth,โ€ Piper announced. Immediately, Warrickโ€™s eyes widened with relief, and he embraced her tightly.

โ€œWe canโ€™t just listen to you, Piper. Investigations must be made,โ€ Dane stated, his gaze fixed on Warrick.

Why was he looking at Warrick? Warrick looked down, intimidated by Daneโ€™s intense stare.

โ€œLike sister, like brother,โ€ Warrick mouthed.

Dane shook his head, refusing to laugh. โ€œIf I find out youโ€™re lying, you will be dealt withโ€ฆ Itโ€™s wrong for a man to cheat on his woman, even worse to deny a pregnancy and leave the burden solely on her.โ€

I clicked my tongue. Heโ€™s referring to his own actions. I had to carry the burden of our twinsโ€™ pregnancy, childbirth, and infancy alone. And isnโ€™t he cheating on me with Kaida?

I shifted, sitting and crossing my arms. โ€œWeโ€™re not scaredโ€ฆ let the investigations proceed, as long as I know for a fact that the pregnancy isnโ€™t Warrickโ€™s.โ€

Dane nodded and sat. โ€œFine thenโ€ฆ Alina, you can go.โ€

Alina left. Watching her go, I turned to Dane, then quickly looked away. He placed his hand on mine, squeezing it. โ€œAre you still angry at me?โ€

I rolled my eyes. โ€œDid you give me a reason not to be?โ€

Dane sighed, kissing my hand. I pulled it away and wiped it. โ€œYou can quit pretending nowโ€ฆ no oneโ€™s watching.โ€

I turned away, seeing Evelynโ€™s eyes narrowed on me. I blinked and looked down.

The meeting ended, and it was time for me to go to the office. Leaving the council hall, Evelyn hurried toward me.

โ€œYour mood has been off all dayโ€ฆ Do you need someone to talk to?โ€

I sighed, looking down. โ€œMaybe in my office.โ€

Evelyn followed me quietly, shutting the door and sitting before me.

โ€œIโ€™m all ears,โ€ she said seriously, resting her elbows on the desk and chin on her palm.

โ€œItโ€™s Dane,โ€ I began.

She nodded. โ€œYesโ€ฆ Dane. What happened to him?โ€

โ€œHave you noticed anything different about him lately?โ€ I asked.

She nodded, relaxing in her chair. โ€œI sure have.โ€

I leaned in, eager to hear her observations.

โ€œDane has beenโ€ฆโ€ she began softly, โ€œโ€ฆoddly sweet and romantic with youโ€ฆ He now has time for the kids and family, too.โ€

I grunted. โ€œHmmโ€ฆ Is that it?โ€

Evelyn nodded. โ€œOf courseโ€ฆ what else is there to notice?โ€

I sighed, running my fingers through my hair. โ€œDane is cheating on me.โ€

Evelynโ€™s eyes locked with mine, then she threw her head back, bursting into laughter. She rolled off her chair, clutching her stomach.

I furrowed my brows, rolling my eyes, and waited for her laughter to subside.

She finally composed herself. โ€œWhy arenโ€™t you laughing?โ€

I shrugged. She raised a hand. โ€œWaitโ€ฆ is this the part where you say itโ€™s a prank?โ€

I pursed my lips, maintaining a straight face. She sat back down, furrowing her brows like me.

โ€œYou were kidding, right?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œNope.โ€

Evelyn stared into space. โ€œAre you sure of what youโ€™re saying?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œI donโ€™t know what to be sure of anymore. All arrows point in one directionโ€ฆ I just donโ€™t know.โ€

Evelyn swallowed, taking my hand. โ€œListen, Aurora, Dane never cheatsโ€ฆ I know him too well.โ€

My shoulders slumped. โ€œThen how do you explain finding him in Kaidaโ€™s cell late at night? She was naked, her hands on his chest, and he was holding onto her.โ€

Evelyn narrowed her eyes. โ€œYou saw that?โ€

I nodded. โ€œYes, I didโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThen we argued. I slapped him, he raised his hands to me, then left. When I looked for him, I found out heโ€™d gone back to the dungeon. I got there, but neither he nor Kaida were to be found.โ€

โ€œKaidaโ€™s not in her cell?โ€ Evelyn asked, shocked. โ€œShe escaped?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œThe guards said Dane took her outโ€ฆ I donโ€™t even know where he took herโ€ฆ The next place I saw him was in the council hall.โ€

Evelyn shook her head firmly. โ€œThis canโ€™t be true. Dane isnโ€™t a cheater, and heโ€™s certainly not someone who would ever harm a woman.โ€

โ€œBut thatโ€™s what it seemed like today.โ€

โ€œAuroraโ€ฆ is that what you think of me?โ€

I looked up to see Dane standing at the door, pain etched on his face.
