Chapter 62
I told him about the dream, the goddess, the โmistakeโ that was made.
He snorted. โThe mistake being that the shadow wounded you instead of me?โ
โIt seems like it,โ I said. โBut did I succeed in saving you? Are you all right?โ
โYes.โ He paused. โWhy did you do it?โ
I looked down at my carefully folded hands. My veins hummed with nervous energy, and my fingers wanted so badly to move; to twitch and fiddle and distract me from the way Dane was looking at me.
โI donโt know. It was instinct,โ I said, truthfully. โI saw what was about to happen and I couldnโt stand the thought of youโฆโ
I cut off and swallowed. โBut Iโm glad youโre okay.โ

His hand tightened around mine. โI have to. Iโmโฆnot always a good man. I can be a ruthless bastard when I have to. But Iโve always tried to keep one rule: donโt harm the innocent.โ
โHonor,โ I whispered.
โIf thatโs what you want to call it.โ His voice was just as quiet as mine. โI was so certain of myself. But it turns out, I donโt always know who the innocent are. Not even when theyโre right in front of me, telling me, for years.โ
He tugged my hand, and I was forced to look up at him.
What I saw in his face, the tenderness thereโฆ A fist closed around my heart. I couldnโt breathe. โYou didnโt deserve any of it. Words can never make up for what Iโve done to you, but Iโm sorry.โ
โDane-โ
But he didnโt stop speaking. He drew me closer, until my hand was pressed against his heart, until he could lean his forehead against mine, the way Holden had a moment ago. โI will spend the rest of my life trying to make up for what Iโve done. I wantโฆโ
