Chapter 65 AURORA

โ€œNo!โ€ I clamped my teeth over whatever else I was about to say.

One thing Iโ€™d learned in the last five years was that Augusta DeVere loved when I was imperiousโ€ฆto everyone except her.

โ€œExcuse me?โ€ she snapped. โ€œI gave you an order, you ungrateful pup. Remember, I own everything in your life. You will obey me, or I will take it all away.โ€

Dane still sat close to me on the bed. He sat back, watching me. Then, to my shock, he took my hand in his and squeezed.

After so long thinking of him as someone who hated me, I was so surprised by the reassurance, I almost pulled away. But his hand felt so good around mine. I squeezed back.

โ€œOf course, Iโ€™ll obey you, Grandmotherโ€ฆโ€

Dane scowled. I wasnโ€™t sure if it was because he didnโ€™t like to hear me swear obedience to someone, or if he didnโ€™t like that the someone wasnโ€™t him.

โ€œโ€ฆbut I think you may have been deceived about how much progress Iโ€™m making here. Weโ€™ve already uncovered one of the three chosen of the goddess. Plus, we found the missing pages of the ancient book that should uncover the other two.โ€

โ€œThere are three?โ€ she said in surprise. โ€œAurora, I had no idea. Why havenโ€™t you been updating me more often?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, I was going to, but then my injuryโ€ฆโ€

I waited for my grandmotherโ€™s warmth to return. It didnโ€™t. However, her voice wasnโ€™t as cold as it had been at first. โ€œWell. I suppose under the circumstances, it would be a waste to pull out the resources weโ€™ve already invested.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s exactly what I was thinking,โ€ I said, relief flooding me. โ€œWeโ€™ve already sunk enough cost into this that itโ€™s worth continuing a little longer.โ€

โ€œHm,โ€ she said. โ€œA little longer. I wonโ€™t let the fact that Iโ€™ve already spent some money on this force my hand into spending more, however.โ€

โ€œYou have your cut of the packโ€™s profits for this month in your bank account. But Iโ€™m tired of waiting, and of you putting those heirs of mine at risk. I want the relic, Aurora, and I want it soon.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll have it soon,โ€ I said, relieved she wasnโ€™t insisting we come back today.

โ€œIn under a month,โ€ Augusta declared.

My stomach flipped over. โ€œOne month? Itโ€™s possible, Grandmother, but surely two or three monthsโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOne,โ€ she barked. โ€œRelic or not, I want every member of the High Alpine Packโ€”including those childrenโ€”on a flight home.โ€

My hand tightened around the phone. Dane sat next to me. With his keen wolf ears, there was no way he couldnโ€™t hear every word my grandmother said.

He didnโ€™t break eye contact with me as I took a careful breath and said, โ€œOf course, Grandmother.โ€

โ€œGood. Make it happen. Goodbye.โ€

With that, she hung up.

A rumble emanated from Daneโ€™s chest. โ€œYou arenโ€™t taking my children away from me.โ€

I closed my eyes. โ€œTheyโ€™re yours, but theyโ€™re also mine, and through me, theyโ€™re members of High Alpine. Thatโ€™s their pack.โ€

โ€œI claim them. Iโ€™ll make them part of Blue Ridge.โ€

My eyes flew open, and I put a hand on his chest. โ€œDonโ€™t. Justโ€ฆ wait. Give me time. Augusta cares more about whatโ€™s good for High Alpine Pack than how happy myโ€”ourโ€”children are. Donโ€™t be like her, Dane. We have to put our childrenโ€™s happiness first.โ€

The muscles in his jaw worked, but he nodded. โ€œI wonโ€™t fly off the handle, and I wonโ€™t claim them for my pack just yet. But this has to happen, Aurora. Iโ€™m not letting them go.โ€

I rubbed my temples. I had always looked out for the twins, and I wouldnโ€™t stop now. But this was a bridge we could cross when we came to it. It wasnโ€™t worth fighting Dane or my grandmother over right at this moment.

I had to change the subject. โ€œWe have a much tighter timeline than I had originally planned,โ€ I said. โ€œI was hoping for weeks with those two pages before we made another move, if not months. Translation is so tricky. Getting it right canโ€™t be rushed.โ€

Dane grunted. โ€œWe can make it happen in a month. Maybe thatโ€™s for the bestโ€”we wonโ€™t be able to be as careful, but it also means there will be less time for outsiders to find out what weโ€™re doing and interfere.โ€

โ€œWe need to meet with everyone,โ€ I said.

โ€œGive me an hour,โ€ Dane said. โ€œIโ€™ll make it happen. And when the meeting is overโ€ฆโ€

I looked at him curiously. โ€œWhen itโ€™s over?โ€

He lifted my hands and pressed my knuckles to his lips. In a move that made heat pool between my legs, he slid the tip of his tongue between my first and middle fingers in a hot, suggestive stroke. โ€œHave dinner with me. Then stay the night. Weโ€™ve waited long enough. Say yes.โ€
