Chapter 65 AURORA
โNo!โ I clamped my teeth over whatever else I was about to say.
One thing Iโd learned in the last five years was that Augusta DeVere loved when I was imperiousโฆto everyone except her.
โExcuse me?โ she snapped. โI gave you an order, you ungrateful pup. Remember, I own everything in your life. You will obey me, or I will take it all away.โ
Dane still sat close to me on the bed. He sat back, watching me. Then, to my shock, he took my hand in his and squeezed.
After so long thinking of him as someone who hated me, I was so surprised by the reassurance, I almost pulled away. But his hand felt so good around mine. I squeezed back.
โOf course, Iโll obey you, Grandmotherโฆโ
Dane scowled. I wasnโt sure if it was because he didnโt like to hear me swear obedience to someone, or if he didnโt like that the someone wasnโt him.
โโฆbut I think you may have been deceived about how much progress Iโm making here. Weโve already uncovered one of the three chosen of the goddess. Plus, we found the missing pages of the ancient book that should uncover the other two.โ
โThere are three?โ she said in surprise. โAurora, I had no idea. Why havenโt you been updating me more often?โ
โIโm sorry, I was going to, but then my injuryโฆโ
I waited for my grandmotherโs warmth to return. It didnโt. However, her voice wasnโt as cold as it had been at first. โWell. I suppose under the circumstances, it would be a waste to pull out the resources weโve already invested.โ
โThatโs exactly what I was thinking,โ I said, relief flooding me. โWeโve already sunk enough cost into this that itโs worth continuing a little longer.โ
โHm,โ she said. โA little longer. I wonโt let the fact that Iโve already spent some money on this force my hand into spending more, however.โ
โYou have your cut of the packโs profits for this month in your bank account. But Iโm tired of waiting, and of you putting those heirs of mine at risk. I want the relic, Aurora, and I want it soon.โ
โYouโll have it soon,โ I said, relieved she wasnโt insisting we come back today.
โIn under a month,โ Augusta declared.
My stomach flipped over. โOne month? Itโs possible, Grandmother, but surely two or three monthsโฆโ
โOne,โ she barked. โRelic or not, I want every member of the High Alpine Packโincluding those childrenโon a flight home.โ
My hand tightened around the phone. Dane sat next to me. With his keen wolf ears, there was no way he couldnโt hear every word my grandmother said.
He didnโt break eye contact with me as I took a careful breath and said, โOf course, Grandmother.โ
โGood. Make it happen. Goodbye.โ
With that, she hung up.
A rumble emanated from Daneโs chest. โYou arenโt taking my children away from me.โ
I closed my eyes. โTheyโre yours, but theyโre also mine, and through me, theyโre members of High Alpine. Thatโs their pack.โ
โI claim them. Iโll make them part of Blue Ridge.โ
My eyes flew open, and I put a hand on his chest. โDonโt. Justโฆ wait. Give me time. Augusta cares more about whatโs good for High Alpine Pack than how happy myโourโchildren are. Donโt be like her, Dane. We have to put our childrenโs happiness first.โ
The muscles in his jaw worked, but he nodded. โI wonโt fly off the handle, and I wonโt claim them for my pack just yet. But this has to happen, Aurora. Iโm not letting them go.โ
I rubbed my temples. I had always looked out for the twins, and I wouldnโt stop now. But this was a bridge we could cross when we came to it. It wasnโt worth fighting Dane or my grandmother over right at this moment.
I had to change the subject. โWe have a much tighter timeline than I had originally planned,โ I said. โI was hoping for weeks with those two pages before we made another move, if not months. Translation is so tricky. Getting it right canโt be rushed.โ
Dane grunted. โWe can make it happen in a month. Maybe thatโs for the bestโwe wonโt be able to be as careful, but it also means there will be less time for outsiders to find out what weโre doing and interfere.โ
โWe need to meet with everyone,โ I said.
โGive me an hour,โ Dane said. โIโll make it happen. And when the meeting is overโฆโ
I looked at him curiously. โWhen itโs over?โ
He lifted my hands and pressed my knuckles to his lips. In a move that made heat pool between my legs, he slid the tip of his tongue between my first and middle fingers in a hot, suggestive stroke. โHave dinner with me. Then stay the night. Weโve waited long enough. Say yes.โ
