โI just want to prove myself, I want to start over!โ Hannah said with determination.
Freya slowly shook her head. โIโm sorry, Hannah. I donโt think I can help you with this.โ
Hannahโs expression changed, her tone rising with frustration. โWhy not, Freya? Donโt you want to see me happy?โ Even Emily looked surprised. โFreya, do you have something else on your mind?โ
Freya sighed. โNo, Emily, nothing like that. I justโฆ I just donโt think Hannah and Andrew are a good match.โ
The more she spoke, the quieter her voice became, her gaze drifting away.
Emily studied her sister closely but chose not to push further. Still, she understood everything in an instant.
Freya had always been the quiet one and never fought for anything. Yet, this time, something had clearly shifted. Hannah snapped, โFreya, what do you mean weโre not a good match? Dad already arranged for us three to be with Andrew. Once you and Emily back off, Iโll have a chance. Isnโt that how itโs supposed to go?โ
Freya took a deep breath and finally answered honestly. โThen let me just be straight with you, Hannah. You and Andrew really donโt suit each other. Youโve seen it yourself. Heโs close to our family because of Logan and Dad, not because of the three of us.โ
She continued, โAnd some of the things youโve doneโฆ they really turned him off. After what happened with Hank, do you really think Andrew would be willing to take you in?โ
Hannah let out a sharp scream. Her voice cracked with anger. โFreya, what are you saying? Youโre trying to say Iโm not good enough for him? And what, you are? Iโm your little sister, Freya. Your sister! Canโt you just let me have this?โ
She broke into another round of loud sobbing, as if she had just been deeply wronged.
Emily rushed to comfort her. โHannah, donโt cry. Thatโs not what Freya meant, okay? Come on, stop cryingโฆโ
But the more she spoke, the harder Hannah cried. She started flailing, throwing a tantrum right there on the bed.
Freyaโs chest felt tight with frustration. Her face darkened. She wanted to scream, to lash out, but could not. Somewhere deep inside, a trace of disgust began to bloom, disgust toward her own sister.
However, the guilt came just as quickly.
How could she think that way? Hannah was her baby sister. She was supposed to protect her, not resent her.
If Hannah wanted Andrew, then as her elder sister, it was her duty to support her, right?
โFine,โ Freya whispered, barely audible. โStop crying. Iโll help you. Iโll help you be with Andrew.โ
Hannah wiped her eyes and looked up in delight. โReally?โ
Freya looked at the smile on her face. She was so selfish, so certain, and her heart ached.
After all, Freya wanted him too.
They were siblings, sharing the same blood. So why should she be the one to give him up?
And letโs be honest, out of the three sisters, she was the one closest to Andrew.
โReally,โ Freya repeated softly, even though every word stabbed at her.
Despite the bitterness swirling inside her, she gave in.
Hannah squealed and threw her arms around her. โI knew it! Youโre always the one who loves me most! Freya, Emilyโฆ Letโs go! Didnโt Logan and Dad invite Andrew to stay for dinner? I want to sit by him, serve him, show him how good I can be!โ
Freya forced a smile. โSure.โ
As she held her sister, her eyes met Emilyโs.
Emily saw everything. She did not need to ask because the truth was written all over Freyaโs face.
Freya shook her head slightly, silently begging her not to speak; she was stepping aside.
Emily exhaled quietly, her heart weighed down by worry.
