Chapter 367
If Jayrodaleโs wealthiest man could destroy him so easily, Donald shuddered to think about the power level of someone who commanded that kind of authority. The sense of impending doom was overwhelming.
Mark said coldly, โYour tears are useless nowโฆ Itโs too late. Tell me, what possessed you to arrest Mr. Lloyd in the first place?โ
Donaldโs face crumpled as he explained, โIt was Aspen Stevens. She told me Mr. Lloyd committed fraud at the antique appraisal convention, causing her to lose tens of millions, so Iโฆโ
Mark cut him off with a sneer. โSo, you just blindly acted on this womanโs word? You didnโt follow proper procedure or gather evidence? You just took her baseless accusations at face value?โ
Donald shrank back, stammering, โIโI didnโt think it through. Aspenโs my old classmate, and I thought Iโd do her a favor.โ
Mark stated indifferently, โWhat else? You better tell me everything. Otherwise, I wonโt be able to protect you if Marvin comes back.โ
Donald swallowed hard and spilled everything without reservation. โI actually wanted to sleep with Aspen, so when she called for help, I agreed without thinking. I figured sheโd owe me a favor, and I could legitimately ask her to meet me at a hotel afterward.โ
He continued, โI also heard Mr. Lloyd had discovered a priceless treasure worth millions at the event. I got greedy and thought Iโd bring it back to the precinct to see what was so special about it.โ
Mark mocked, โYou werenโt just lookingโyou were blinded by greed and had a death wish. Coveting Mr. Lloydโs possessions? Donald, itโs a miracle youโre still alive!โ
Donald asked cautiously, โMr. Thatcher, who exactly is Mr. Lloyd? Not only did the Aickers, the Rhodes family, and the two underground crime lords Dylan and Natasha come running, but even you and Mr. Yates showed up at my humble officeโI nearly passed out of fright!โ
Mark clasped his hands behind his back and replied flatly, โDonโt ask questions you shouldnโt. However, Iโm curious about his background, too. If Iโm not mistaken, heโs probably from one of the powerful old money families or even centuries-old royalties of Chetvine.โ
Donald shivered at the revelation. In Holtrien, centuries-old royalties were even more powerful than those old money families.
โOne more question,โ Mark continued. โDid anything happen between you and Aspen?โ
Donald hesitated, โIs thisโฆ relevant to the situation with Mr. Lloyd?โ
โJust answer the question unless you donโt value your life anymore,โ Mark snapped impatiently.
โIโll tell you, Iโll tell you! Donโt be angry,โ Donald quickly replied. โNothing happened with Aspen yet. Sheโs too cleverโI made suggestions, but she said sheโd wait for results first.โ
Mark frowned, โYouโre married with kids, and youโre the chief commissioner. Why are you still trying to do such sleazy things?โ
