"What did you think?" Keeley asked curiously as the end credits rolled.
Aaron had been paying close attention to the movie the entire time. He seemed genuinely engaged.
"It had an interesting premise, and the movie score was pleasant. You said there are eight of these?"
"Yeah," she hesitated. "Do you want to watch the second one with me? It's still early enough for another movie."
"Sure. I'm going to get some water first, though. Want some?" he asked, standing and stretching.
Keeley nodded and followed him out to take a quick bathroom break. Aaron returned to the TV room first and handed her a glass. She thanked him and sat cross-legged in her original spot, inserting the next DVD from her box set.
When they reached the halfway point of the movie, she laughed. "You know, my dad has tried watching this movie eight times, but he always falls asleep right here."
He didn't respond, so she looked over and saw he had fallen asleep too. She laughed harder. What was it about this part that knocked people out? She'd never had a problem with it.
Figuring he'd be up all night if she didn't wake him, Keeley crawled over to his side of the couchโit really was too hugeโand poked his face. "Aaron. Wake up."
He scrunched his nose, twitching in his sleep, but ignored her. She frowned. That usually worked.
"Aaaaaaron. You're going to be up all night if you don't wake up now," she said in a singsong voice, nudging his shoulder. Still nothing.
An evil grin crossed her face. Since he was being difficult, she decided to see how much it would take to wake him. She crept upstairs to her claimed bathroom (the one with the jetted tub) and grabbed some makeup.
Keeley rarely wore makeup, being lazy, but she knew how to apply it well from her high-society years when it was a necessity. Holding her phone to record, she began applying eyeshadow. Aaron remained asleep.
Was this mean-spirited? Yes. But she hadn't put makeup on an unsuspecting male since Kaleb was alive, and she was feeling mischievous.
Surprisingly, she managed to complete his eye makeup and apply lipstick before he twitched. He woke as she applied blush.
"Whattayadoin?" he mumbled sleepily, blinking.
Seeing the blush brush and her phone, instead of the icy glare she expected, he gave her the most bewildered look she'd ever seen. Keeley cracked up, falling backward off the couch and dropping her still-recording phone.
"Were you tickling me?"
He still hadn't caught on. Wheezing, she rolled around on the ground.
"Why are you laughing so hard?" he asked, still confused.
"Goโlookโmirrorโ" Keeley managed, gasping for breath. Finally grabbing her phone, she shut off and locked the recording to prevent him from deleting it once he realized what she'd done.
She heard him yelp from down the hall and laughed harder. He didn't seem angry when he returned, only pouting like a little kid, which looked even weirder with the bright red lipstick.
"That was childish."
"Yeah, but it was also awesome," she snickered, regaining control. "You wouldn't wake up, so I wanted to see how far I could push it."
He loomed over her, getting on his hands and knees, pinning her to the ground. Already breathless from laughing, her heart pounded.
"What are you doing?"
"I can be childish too. You're trapped here until you've properly paid for your crime," he said seriously.
Keeley was curious how this would pan out. She didn't expect him to grab the lipstick and apply another layer.
"Are you completely nuts?!"
"No, because this is your punishment."
"Whatโ!" she squeaked as he leaned down, kissing her face. He covered every inch except her lips before getting off and sitting on the floor.
"There. Now you look ridiculous too," Aaron said, satisfied.
She used her phone's front-facing camera as a mirror. There were at least twenty full or partial lipstick marks on her face.
"Aww, this is never going to come off!" Keeley complained. Red lipstick was the worst to remove. Her face would still be tinted red in the morning.
"Serves you right!"
She scooted closer and snapped a selfie. Now they both had proof of their embarrassment.
"Delete that."
"Nope. I'm making it my phone background," she teased.
"Why do I even like you?"
Using his tactic, she rested her chin on her hands, looking as cute as possible. "Because I'm so pretty."
"Stay right there!" he ordered.
"Huh?"
Aaron retrieved his phone and turned on the camera. "Do that again. I need a new phone background too."
Keeley rolled her eyes but complied. They hadn't done anything this ridiculous since collegeโor possibly ever. This was the most fun she'd had in a while.
She peeked at his phone; it passed the test. As he set it as his background, she saw his current one: the picture of them in reindeer onesies on Christmas Eve, his arms around her, his chin on her head. An unexpected wave of fondness washed over her. That was pretty sweet.
