Listen to this chapter:

Keeley was working on a homework assignment on her computer when she needed to use the restroom. Upon returning to her desk, she found Molly, her cat, sprawled across the keyboard.

"Come on, I was using that!" she complained. "Move, kitty!"

She tried nudging the cat, but Molly remained stubbornly immobile. Frustrated, Keeley was about to move her forcibly when a pair of arms wrapped around her from behind. Aaron was home.

He slumped against her, burying his face in her shoulder. Was he shaking?

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"I might have some bad news," he admitted.

"What kind of bad news?"

"You might want to sit down for this." He led her to the couch, ensuring her comfort before continuing.

"Someone sent Cameron a share transfer document today, congratulating him and calling it a gift. They not only know about my dummy shareholders, but they also seem to know about you."

She gasped. How? Nobody knew where Aaron lived, and their public appearances weren't the sort frequented by high society.

"But if they gave you shares…they must know you're going against your father. The enemy of your enemy is your friend, right?"

Aaron shook his head. "I'd think so, if it weren't for the fact that I'm pretty sure it was sent by the man who fathered Lacy's baby. Because he…he had a hand in killing you."

Keeley's jaw dropped. He'd never told her that! Come to think of it, he'd never mentioned anything about Lacy's baby's father other than it wasn't him.

She hadn't considered who it might be. With the day's other revelations, it was low on her priority list.

"I think you'd better explain."

He did, detailing how Lacy had begged him to take responsibility for her baby, claiming someone tricked her into believing he was the father. He'd known it was a lie from the start. Her approach suggested she knew the true father and that he'd manipulated her to infiltrate the Hale family.

"they didn't know I was planning to send you away to be safe. I'm almost positive they killed you to pave the way for Lacy and that man's child to end up with me. She threw a fit after you died about me not taking responsibility, and my father made all sorts of threats.

"It was a mess. Lacy didn't back down until I demanded an amniocentesis paternity test. That's when she finally confessed it wasn't mine. She knew she'd be caught anyway and didn't want an invasive procedure. She went crazy and killed Max shortly afterward."

Keeley was shocked by the extent of the post-death drama. She'd known Lacy killed Max, but that was all.

"What makes you think it was sent by the father of Lacy's baby?"

Aaron rubbed his forehead. "Aiden looked into it. The last phone call the former shareholder received was from the same number Lacy has been calling regularly since I publicly humiliated her in April.

"It didn't belong to anyone in her usual social circle, so we got suspicious. I always knew the father of her baby wasn't in that circle, or I would have found him sooner. It's still just a theory, but it makes sense. I have no idea how long they were working together in our last life, but it could have been this early."

Keeley frowned. It was a lot of speculation, but she couldn't deny the coincidences. Knowing Lacy, she wouldn't associate with anyone outside high society without a compelling reason.

"Who's your suspect?"

"His name is Graydon Meyer. Have you heard of him? He's a big name in tech these days."

She hadn't. Curious, she searched him on her phone. The blood drained from her face when she saw a picture accompanying an article. She recognized the face.

Graydon Meyer was Gray, the man who'd helped her with Ryan a couple of weeks ago! She'd even briefly chatted with him about her wedding, as he'd noticed her engagement ring. But that shouldn't have been a problem…unless he already knew who she was.

"I think this might be my fault," she whispered.

"Why on earth would it be your fault?"

Keeley briefly explained, and the room's temperature plummeted, causing her to shiver. She apologized immediately, and he visibly relaxed.

"No," Aaron said, shaking his head. "I'm not mad at you. You said all you did was mention you were getting married and your first name. There's no way he could have put that together unless he already knew who you are to me."

But how did he know? They hadn't been high-profile since reconnecting last year. This man must have been investigating Aaron; the question was why.

And if Graydon Meyer was involved in her death, why had he helped her recently? The pieces didn't fit.

"Do you think…something changed on his end in this life? A reason he wouldn't be against us?"

Aaron frowned, clearly not having considered that. "But then why would he still be working with Lacy?"

Keeley didn't know. She was just brainstorming. None of it made sense. Besides, Aaron and Keeley were the only ones reborn; anyone else should have continued their lives as before.

Or…perhaps there was a ripple effect from those touched by them.

"I'm not sure. But what if something did change, making him on our side? You said he congratulated you and gave you a gift that would actually help you…what if it's not a threat?" she suggested.
