Run, Girl (If You Can)-Chapter 273: Whose Side Was He On?

Listen to this chapter:

Graydon didn't appear to be lying, but that didn't necessarily mean anything. Assuming he was telling the truth, did that mean he wasn't romantically involved with Lacy? Then how had she become pregnant?

Keeley pondered this. He'd also said he was focusing on his career—mild words, considering their source. He was one of the city's premier businessmen; if the tabloids were to be believed, his fingers were in many pies.

So, was he after Hale Investments or not? Based on his handling of the share transfer document, she doubted it. He'd clearly blackmailed the previous shareholder. If he already had compromising information, he could have taken those shares himself at any time.

Instead, he'd given them to Aaron, suggesting support for Aaron's takeover. Whose side was he on—Aaron's, Alistair's, or his own? And how would Aaron's takeover benefit him?

"There's nothing wrong with focusing on your career. My friend is studying to be a doctor, and she's doing the same thing," she rambled, trying to prolong the conversation. She needed more information.

Her phone buzzed. The driver announced her arrival, but she couldn't leave yet! Graydon would see her pregnancy and know the truth. She had to wait for him to leave.

She quickly texted the driver, instructing him to wait at a nearby parking garage. Then, smiling at Graydon, she lied.

"My ride is running late," she said.

"He? I would have thought your husband would be at work by now," he remarked, swirling his straw.

"He is. He's sending someone because it's cold."

"How considerate. You're a lucky woman."

Lucky wasn't the word she'd use. Keeley craved a peaceful life, which seemed elusive. However, she appreciated Aaron's newfound consideration and the nice things he did for her.

She murmured an affirmation before launching her next attack.

"So, what brings an app developer to a café mid-morning? I'd think you'd grab something and go, not chat."

It was a simple statement designed to elicit his true identity, allowing her to ask more pointed questions.

"That's the benefit of being the boss. I can do whatever I want, as long as the business runs smoothly."

He'd admitted it! "The boss? You wouldn't happen to be Graydon Meyer? You said your name is Gray, and you're the boss of an app development company."

He seemed pleasantly surprised. "Well, aren't you smart! I suppose a PhD does help. You caught me. Graydon Meyer, at your service. Since you know my name, may I have yours?"

He was trying to trap her too. Using her maiden name would reveal her investigation, but omitting it would confirm her marriage. Aaron was almost certain he'd sent the "wedding gift." Lying wouldn't be advantageous.

"Keeley Hale."

"Hale?" Graydon's thoughtful smile annoyed her; it was clearly an act.

"Since we're playing games…is your husband Aaron Hale? It's not a common name here. And you mentioned your husband sending someone—not everyone has that kind of manpower."

Was he onto her, or simply piecing together her statements? It was time to be direct.

The appended promotional material was removed.

Oh, she wasn't good at this! Years had dulled her skills in deception. Honesty was essential; a lie would backfire. Unfortunately, his interrogation was far more effective than hers.

"Good guess. We're keeping it quiet for now, so please keep it to yourself," she said with a sweet, innocent smile.

Graydon's expression turned sly. "I'll respect that. But why such secrecy? Aren't marriages happy occasions to celebrate?"

Keeley was exhausted. "Look, I'm not stupid. I know you know about Aaron's issues with his father. So, be honest. Why did you send my husband that share transfer document?"

He grinned, clapping his hands. He was enjoying this. "So, he's done his research! Aaron never ceases to impress. I didn't expect him to figure it out so quickly. It's simple, really. I want to see him dethrone Alistair Hale."

"Why not do it yourself?" she asked bluntly. "You're clearly capable."

Graydon shook his head. "This is far more entertaining. Betrayed by his own son, the man he trained to be his successor! It's too poetic to pass up."

He seemed truthful. Keeley sensed no deceit. He clearly disliked Alistair, but that didn't preclude disliking Aaron as well.

She leaned back, narrowing her eyes. Was he using Aaron, or supporting him? It was strange…but when he spoke of her husband, he seemed almost fond, like old friends.

Aaron had never been friendly with Graydon Meyer. They hadn't even met, as far as she knew.
