Aiden spent hours scouring surveillance footage inside and outside the Appzoid offices, a task Aaron had specifically instructed him to keep simple, avoiding anything requiring complex decryption. He was accustomed to reviewing footage, but the sheer volume was tedious. He much preferred hacking into cameras to actually watching their contents; often, the footage yielded nothing interesting.
Still, being handsomely paid to watch videos wasn't the worst job in the world. It beat fielding calls from technologically challenged individuals and troubleshooting their problems.
He was reviewing the footage of Lacy's removal from the lobby for the fifth time, searching for overlooked details, when Aaron texted:
"Before I forget, Keeley wants to know who leaked her information. She gave me an earful after barely escaping a mob while trying to get a replacement part for the auto-cleaning litter box. Take a break and find that first."
Aiden grinned, imagining his feisty former neighbor berating her husband. A break was welcome; his eyes were glazing over. He sensed something odd about the footage but couldn't quite pinpoint it.
Keeley's news hadn't died down after weeks; she was still mobbed whenever she went outside. She was losing her mind. How could people be so inconsiderate of her need to get out with her babies? She couldn't leave them at home; her dad was at work, and Violet and Kaleb were too young for a babysitter. Maybe Jennica, but she had Off-Broadway rehearsals.
She'd been short with Aaron during his lunch-break check-in, still agitated from her near-miss with the mob. She certainly didn't expect a text from Aiden revealing the source of the leak.
Her eyes narrowed. Of course it was Ryan. His personality had completely changed after she rejected him. She wanted to confront him, but the babiesโฆ Unlessโฆ
Keeley called for her driver, heading to Hale Investments. She'd pay her husband a quick visit.
Twenty minutes later, she gazed up at the skyscraper. When had she last been inside? Not often, as Aaron disapproved of unnecessary work visits in their previous life. But Alistair was gone, so there was nothing to worry about.
She told the driver to wait. A quick trip to the top floor to drop off the babies would suffice; the diaper bag was packed with toys and bottles.
Entering the austere lobby, Keeley nearly forgot how stark the building was. How did Aaron stand it? Ah, yesโhe was a minimalist.
The professionally dressed receptionist looked up coolly. "May I help you?"
"My name is Keeley Hale; I'm here to see my husband."
The receptionist, surely aware of the gossip, subtly assessed Keeley's yellow floral blouse, capris, and white sneakersโnot casual, but not fancy either.
She pressed an intercom button. "Mr. Hale, Mrs. Hale is here to see you."
Aaron's voice boomed menacingly. "Didn't I tell you not to allow her back in this building?"
Not allowed back? She hadn't even been here in this life! He must be referring to his mother, Roslyn. Why would she visit after all this time?
"Sir, your wife is here, not your mother," the receptionist said, slightly embarrassed.
Aaron's tone shifted instantly. "Oh! Send her up."
The receptionist, after confirming Keeley knew the way, directed her to the elevator. Self-conscious in her attire and with two children in tow, Keeley rode up, enduring many stops and curious glances. At least nobody seemed to recognize her.
Reaching her floor, she first passed Cameron's office. She knocked and waved; instead of a simple wave back, he opened the door, confused.
"Keeley? What are you doing here?"
"Looking for Aaron's office," she admitted sheepishly. "Mind pointing me in the right direction?"
Seeing Cameron in a suit and tieโa stark contrast to his usual attireโwas strange. He looked like a vice president.
"It's down the main hallway, two left turns," he explained.
"Thanks! Tell Jennica I said hi."
"I will."
He remained puzzled, but Keeley didn't elaborate, omitting her intention to leave the babies with Aaron to confront someone.
