"Does Aaron know you're here?" Cameron asked, his mouth full of muffin.
Keeley stifled a snort. She barely understood him, but years of talking with her own mouth full had made her fluent in "mouthfullese." It was a bad habit she needed to break, but sometimes a thought was so urgent she had to share it before swallowing. Everyone did it sometimes, right?
"No, we came to see him first. I wanted to sneak up on him," she admitted.
Cameron eyed her skeptically. "How exactly do you plan on sneaking up on him with a double stroller?"
"That's where you come in," Jennica grinned. "We talked about it. If you walk in like you have official business and Keeley hides behind you, she can pop out, and I'll bring the stroller later."
"You guys are really committed to this prank, aren't you?"
They both nodded excitedly. Their day had been boring, despite the nice weather. A little spice was in order.
"Alright, I'll bite. You did bring muffins," he said with a shrug.
The group navigated the labyrinthine hallways until they reached Aaron's office. Keeley shadowed Cameron, practicing their approach while Jennica watched appraisingly.
When Jennica gave the signal, they approached. Cameron knocked three times and opened the door.
"I'm busy," Aaron called irritably, before seeing them. "Oh, it's you. What do you want?"
"Hey, Cam," Aiden greeted cheerfully.
"I wanted to ask about the stock market reports, but if you're too busy…" Cameron improvised.
His acting wasn't bad. Being married to an actress had its perks; she'd taught her roommates a few tricks.
He continued talking until Aaron looked away. Keeley dropped to the ground, crawling unnoticed behind the desk chair—well, almost unnoticed. Aiden saw her.
Bewilderment flickered across his face before he resumed his usual expression. Thank goodness he had a poker face.
Keeley slowly stood, trying to decide how to best freak him out. Scream? Hug him? No, that could result in injury. She settled on quickly covering his eyes.
"What the—?!"
Aaron's reaction was perfect. He practically jumped out of his chair, having not expected anyone else in the office. His friends stifled their laughter.
He reached for the hands obscuring his vision, recognizing the familiar feel. He ran his fingers over them before gently prying them away and swiveling to confirm his suspicions.
Keeley saw the most confused expression she'd ever seen on his face and burst out laughing. Cameron and Aiden followed suit. Their laughter continued until Jennica arrived, frowning.
"Aww, I missed the fun? You guys are lame!"
Aaron's confusion turned to resignation. He rolled his eyes. "I should have known. How did she get behind me?"
"A magician never reveals her secrets," Keeley deadpanned.
"I'm more curious how you knew it was her," Aiden said, wiping away tears of laughter. "You were about to attack, then you stopped and held her hands."
"A magician never reveals his secrets," Aaron repeated.
Keeley smiled. She suspected he recognized her wedding ring.
"I'm pretty sure it was my ring."
"You're allowed secrets, but I'm not? I see how it is," Aaron teased.
Everyone looked like those squeeze toys with popping eyes. They still weren't used to Aaron's playful side, which only emerged around his wife. Keeley was used to people reacting with awe or horror to their relationship.
She couldn't blame them. If someone had told her Aaron Hale would be this playful before she met him again after college, she wouldn't have believed it. Objectively, she'd have the same reaction. Hadn't she been in disbelief when he'd re-entered her life? His personality had changed so much.
Keeley had a profound effect, but his friends played a role too. Whatever the reason, it was a welcome change. He was the kind of person her younger self had always imagined ending up with.
Aaron's past no longer mattered; he'd exchanged it for a peaceful life with loved ones. His willingness to have fun with her meant more than words could say. They'd had fun when dating in Boston, but it wasn't as complete as now, free from inhibitions.
It had been a long, hard road, but she was grateful for whatever force had brought them back together. They were together, happy, and life was better than she'd ever imagined. Fate had gotten what it wanted.
I removed the extraneous website plug. I also made some minor edits for clarity and flow. The overall story is quite engaging!
