Run, Girl (If You Can)-Chapter 391: A Lot Of Questions

Listen to this chapter:

Aiden had never seen his boss like this in all the years he'd worked for him. He was honestly tempted to panic, seeing such a stoic man sobbing as if the world had ended. For Aaron, it probably had. Aiden knew better than any of Aaron's other friends how much his wife meant to him.

The reason he'd even taken over his father's company—the reason he worked for Aaron in the first place—was to avenge those who'd hurt Keeley.

He'd always vaguely wondered what Aaron meant when he said only he and Keeley remembered what happened. Today confirmed his suspicions.

Before he became incoherent, Aaron said, "I'm going to lose her again," implying a previous loss. Then, after the sobbing stopped, he went catatonic, as if he'd already given up on Keeley's survival, even though she was still fighting.

That meant only one thing: Keeley had died before, and Alistair Hale and Lacy Knighton were involved. It explained everything: Aaron's paranoia, his knowledge of Aiden's hacking skills (which led to Aiden's recruitment), and his obsession with a woman who'd long rejected him.

But this raised other questions: How had Aaron and Keeley gotten a "second life"? What had happened to them before? Why had Keeley initially hated Aaron so much? Most importantly, how and when had she died? Aaron had been on edge lately—more so than Aiden had ever seen. He guessed it was happening now.

Aaron possessed a strange omniscience, a likely result of living the same life twice. His extreme distress…

"Aaron, did Keeley die today in your other life?" Aiden dared to ask.

Ignoring his secret being revealed, Aaron mumbled from his hands, "Yes."

Having his suspicions confirmed was far stranger than he'd imagined. He had countless questions, but Aaron was clearly not receptive. He asked only one more:

"Was it a car accident?"

Anyone would freak out if their pregnant wife were in a wreck, but Aaron's resignation suggested this had happened before.

"Yes."

Aiden knew his boss disliked being touched (except by his wife), but Aaron looked so pitiful that Aiden hugged him. It was clearly a different car accident that killed Keeley—one involving Alistair Hale or Lacy Knighton. Neither posed a current threat, making this a horrible coincidence.

"Aaron, she's going to be fine. The woman said she's having a C-section, then they'll treat her injuries," Aiden said calmly, holding his friend's trembling shoulders.

He hated seeing Aaron like this. This wasn't the man he'd looked up to since age fourteen. He was supposed to be invincible, not broken. Yes, he was cold, stiff, and humorless (until Keeley married him), but he was strong. He'd held Aiden's family together after its collapse, finding Aiden's mother a well-paying job and secretly paying off their mortgage. Aiden's mother believed the extra money came from bonuses.

Aiden would always be indebted to Aaron. He couldn't abandon him now, even if it was terrifying to see the indomitable Aaron Hale like this.

"Aaron Hale?" the receptionist called after what felt like an hour but was probably less.

Aaron was too distraught to respond, so Aiden went to the desk after patting his shoulder. "He's a bit out of it. Tell me how Keeley is."

"Her baby seems unaffected by the crash. It was delivered safely, and they're running tests. He's six pounds, five ounces, so he'd have been large at term."

What a relief. Aiden felt faint. "And Keeley?" he asked eagerly.

"She lost a lot of blood and is receiving a transfusion. She has a concussion and a broken leg, but she should be fine when she wakes up."

Aiden finally breathed. She was alive. No permanent damage. Aaron hadn't lost her again.

"Thank you," he said fervently before running back to his friend. "Aaron! They're fine; they're both fine! Your son is healthy, and Keeley only has a broken leg, a concussion, and some stitches."

Aaron finally looked up, disbelief etched on his face. His eyes were still hollow. "She's alive? She's really alive?"

"Yes, now go see your kid! The lady said you can. Keeley is still receiving a transfusion, but afterward, you can see her too."

He stood, hugging Aiden tightly, his tears soaking Aiden's shirt. "Keeley said I had nothing to worry about. She said she'd make it through today."

Aiden wasn't sure what to say. She'd made it through the day, but she was hurt. Both had been right and wrong.

What were the odds of a serious car accident on the same day in two lifetimes? Now that Aaron knew his wife and child were okay, Aiden had many questions. He'd just been confronted with the impossible.
