Listen to this chapter:

Kaleb, back in the living room, heard his sister's cries and rushed to check on her. "Vi, what's wrong?"

"Mommy's going to die, and Auntie Alice won't let me see her!" Violet shrieked.

Alice thought, "Whoa, nobody said anything about dying! How did she jump to that conclusion?" She wondered how Keeley managed to parent this girl. Violet was normally so well-behaved. Crocodile tears welled in Kaleb's eyes.

"Mommy's going to die? What about the baby in her tummy?" he asked.

"Daddy and the baby are going to die too," Violet predicted pessimistically. "We're going to be orphans and have to live at Grandpa's house!"

"I don't want to live at Grandpa's house; he doesn't like cats!" Kaleb wailed.

They both rolled on the floor, banging their fists and crying. The only adult in the house could only watch in abject horror.

Alice rubbed her forehead, a headache forming. Everyone said toddlers were the hardest, but these two were ten times worse than Lila ever was.

"Hey guys, your mom isn't going to die! She was in an accident and got hurt, but she'll be fine when she wakes upโ€”"

"She's not awake? She'll sleep forever like Snow White if the prince doesn't kiss her?" Violet demanded, pausing her tantrum.

Alice backtracked. "No, sweetie, she's just asleep because she's hurt and needs to rest. Like Lila needs a nap before playing."

Violet ignored this. "Do you think Daddy's a prince?" she asked worriedly.

Kaleb wiped his tears and shrugged. "I don't know. Uncle Aiden said he's in charge of an empire. Is that the same as a prince?"

"No, emperors are higher ranking. Will it still work?"

"I don't know! Do we need another prince? Daddy says kisses are only for people who love each other."

Alice was tempted to cry from frustration, but this was better than screaming. They couldn't find a stranger to kiss their mother. She'd let their imaginations run wild, hoping they'd forget.

Would Lila be like this? She had limited experience with children before the twins, and even then, it was limited until she had her own baby. Moments like this made her question her parenting abilities.

How did Aaron do it? His parents were cold and detached, yet he was an excellent father. She might ask him for advice.

The twins refocused on her. "Auntie Alice, we need to find a prince to wake Mommy up," Kaleb stated.

"I'm sorry, but I need to stay here in case your dad needs to pick you up. He doesn't have his phone."

This launched another tantrum. She couldn't take it anymore. Jennica spent more time with them; she must know how to handle them.

Alice texted Jennica: "Jennica, are you done at the dentist? The twins are freaking out, and I need help. Keeley was in a car wreck and had a C-section. She and the baby are fine, but the twins think she's dying or needs a prince's kiss."

"KEELEY WHAT?!" Jennica replied immediately, followed by, "I'll be right over."

Less than 30 minutes later, Jennica arrived. The twins threw themselves at her legs.

"Auntie Jen, Auntie Alice is mean!"

Alice gave Jennica a look, and Jennica smiled sympathetically before addressing the kids. She gently stroked their hair.

"Your mom's the toughest lady I know. She doesn't need a prince. Let's go to the park! I'll take you to the hospital when your dad calls."

The twins exchanged a glance. "Is Noah coming?"

"Yes, after the dentist. Okay?"

Jennica got the car seat and toys, ushering them out. She winked at Alice, who stared in awe. Jennica had years of experience with Benny and Cameron's nieces and nephews.
