The minute they had to wait to be launched on the slingshot ride, strapped into their harnesses, was the most terrifying minute of Violet's life. Kaleb grinned excitedly, but she felt like the world was ending. She'd never even been properly in love! She couldn't die now because of a faulty contraption!
"If I die before getting married because of you, I will haunt you from beyond the grave," Violet said through gritted teeth.
Her twin laughed. "What do you need to get married for? You already have a husband waiting anxiously for you to get off the ride in one piece."
Noah was gripping the guardrail near the exit, but Violet couldn't see him. She sighed. Would her brothers ever stop with that joke? They'd better, or her boyfriend might get the wrong idea.
She was about to tell Kaleb to stop teasing when the ride shot upward. Her words died in her throat, replaced by a horrified scream that lasted until they were back on solid ground.
"That was awesome!" Kaleb crowed as they disembarked. "I'm buying the ride video."
"You do that," Violet said weakly, wobbling toward the exit. Her knees wouldn't stop shaking. That was the most terrifying thing she'd ever done. Near the exit, her knees gave way completely, and she pitched forward into Noah's chest.
He steadied her, concern crossing his face. "You alright, Vi?"
"Remember how you said dropping me earlier this week took a year off your life? That ride took one off of mine."
Noah helped her up and walked her to a nearby bench, supporting her with an arm around her waist. He opened a water bottle from his backpack and handed it to her. "Here. Hopefully this helps."
It did. Noah always knew how to fix things. He was the most reliable person Violet knew, unlike her crazy twin, who'd nearly killed her.
Kaleb looked genuinely apologetic at her distress. He hadn't realized it would affect her so negatively; he'd only wanted to have some fun. She'd always seemed so uptight to him.
"I'll let you pick the next ride," he offered by way of apology.
A mischievous grin spread across her face, bringing color back to her cheeks. "I have the perfect one in mind."
As they approached the carousel, Kaleb groaned, but he'd made his bed and had to lie in it. Violet insisted he ride a pink unicorn next to her purple one, and instructed Nathan, who chose a stationary seat, to film them. He was more than happy to oblige—payback for the Cyclone picture was sweet. He later posted the video to Instagram, tagging his brother for all the world to see.
Kaleb's expression was one of great boredom and disgust. Violet laughed the entire ride.
They were getting tired from walking around Coney Island, so they decided on three more rides before calling it a day. The last was the Ferris wheel, for a more relaxing end.
"Everybody huddle up," Violet instructed. "I want a picture of all four of us."
They quickly gathered on a bench, making the carriage lurch slightly. Violet was between Kaleb and Noah; Nathan sat in front of her so they all fit. She grinned widely. Today had been pretty great, aside from the slingshot incident. The only thing that would have made it better was if Oliver had been there.
The picture turned out nicely, capturing everyone's personalities. Kaleb's was mischievous (he was winking); Nathan's smile was so wide his eyes were closed; Noah's was happy and relaxed.
Of all the pictures Violet took that day, she chose to post that one online, captioning it "Kal's home ❤️."
Jeremy was reviewing Aaron's paperwork for Monday's deadline when his phone dinged with an Instagram notification. He'd followed vi.loves.dance after finding her page. It looked like Violet had a new post, her first since her last show began. The second most recent picture showed her in a butterfly costume, striking a pose en pointe.
The new post was a picture of her squeezed between three men who frequently appeared in her photos, captioned "Kal's home ❤️." So her professional baseball player brother had finally returned to New York.
He couldn't tell which man was Kaleb Hale. The tags were crammed into a corner instead of on the individuals. The tagged handles were natethegreat, kal_can_pitch, and karatekid4lyfe.
If Jeremy had to guess, he'd say the dark-haired man on Violet's right was Kaleb, making one of the others her brother Nathan. All four seemed close and comfortable. Could the remaining man be their brother Oliver?
He knew Oliver Hale was studying mechanical engineering and wanted to work at NASA, but nothing else—like where he went to school. Maybe he should ask Violet next time he saw her. She seemed comfortable discussing her family.
The bright smile in the photo was dazzling. Learning more about her brothers would definitely help solve the mystery that was Violet Hale. That smile always affected him strangely. He hoped to see it in person soon.
