Chapter 39 Hit the Jackpot
Meryl nodded, her brow furrowing as she noticed the look of shock etched across Anneโs face. Anneโs mouth was agape, as if it could swallow a whole egg.
โWhatโs wrong? Do you know him?โ Meryl asked, curiosity piqued.
Worried she might have misread the situation, Anne asked, โWhatโs his name? Show me!โ
Recalling the name she had seen on the marriage license earlier that day, Meryl took Anneโs hand and wrote it in her palm.
As the letters formed, Anne went completely still, her expression frozen in disbelief.
After what felt like an eternity, she managed to collect herself, her voice barely above a whisper. โYouโฆ you really donโt know who Chandler is?โ
Meryl shook her head innocently.
โAside from his name, I donโt know much. I just know he runs a company and tends to get hammered at social engagements."
Just as Anne was about to respond, the sound of the police station door crashing open echoed through the room.
A tall man strode in, exuding an air of authority that turned heads and silenced conversations.
Chandler walked in like he owned the place, his gaze locked onto Meryl.
When he spotted the blood on her arm, his expression darkened. โYouโre hurt?โ
Meryl quickly shook her head. โNo, itโs not mine.โ
Chandlerโs face softened slightly, but he still looked concerned. Meryl was dressed too lightly for the chilly atmosphere, her complexion pale.
Without hesitation, he removed his suit jacket and draped it over her shoulders. โButton it up.โ
โSorry for dragging you out here at this hourโฆโ
Merylโs voice was low, guilt creeping in for inconveniencing him.
Chandler frowned. โWeโre married. You donโt need to apologize for that.โ
At that moment, a police officer approached them. โYouโre here to bail them out, right? Come over and sign some paperwork, and you can get them out.โ
Chandler nodded, and then his eyes fell on Anne.
Their gazes met, and Anne felt a rush of uncertainty. She thought, โShould I say something? Itโs understandable that Meryl doesnโt know Chandler well after spending three years in prison, but Iโve crossed paths with him a few times.
After all, Chandler and Dante are practically best friends, making it hard for me to avoid knowing him entirely. We have even shared a meal.
Despite the limited conversation weโve exchanged, Chandler might recognize me.
But how could Merylโs husband be Chandler? Itโs utterly baffling.โ
As the officer prepared the paperwork, signaling for Chandler to follow him, Anne couldnโt hold back any longer.
โOkay, spill it. Whatโs the deal with you and Chandler? How did you two end up married? Who brought it up?โ
Meryl hesitated, recalling that shocking morning. โI think it was himโฆโ
Anneโs expression turned serious.
She thought, โMerylโs been through a lot with Dalton. But Chandlerโs actually willing to marry her? Thatโsโฆ strange.โ
But as she thought about it, a sense of satisfaction washed over her.
Chandlerโs standing in the Aniston family was unshakeable, and now, Meryl marrying him meant she would become Daltonโs aunt.
Imagining the family gatherings, where Dalton would have to toast Meryl alongside Lydia, made Anne giddy with excitement.
Anne said, linking her arm through Merylโs, โGirl, youโve really hit the jackpot with this one."
โDo you have any idea about Chandler and Daltonโฆโ
Before she could finish her thought, the police station door swung open once more.
