Chapter 592 Clearing the Air
Meryl sighed inwardly.
She thought she had every reason to be angry, but Chandler looked like he was carrying the weight of the world. She didnโt understand what he had to be upset about. She thought, โYouโre the one who left your pregnant wife locked up, while you were off with Rachel.โ She stabbed her fork into the pasta, refusing to meet his eyes.
Chandler still had bruises on his face from his earlier fight with Felix. Though Chandler had landed more punches, Felix had fought back hard. His jaw was swollen, and a small cut at the corner of his mouth still oozed blood.
When Meryl had nearly finished her food, Chandler finally broke the silence. Looking directly into her eyes, he asked, โHow do you know Felix?โ
The events of the night had left him reeling. He didnโt think Meryl had been meeting Felix on purpose. It was clear sheโd been locked in the music hall, and Felix hadโฆ
But Chandler couldnโt wrap his head around the fact that Felix, of all people, had been the first one to save her. It gnawed at him, filling him with guilt. If he had realized sooner that Meryl was trapped, he could have been there for her earlier. Instead, it had been Felix who stepped in. As her husband, he felt he had failed her.
But more than guilt, there was fear. Unlike Dalton, Merylโs ex, Felix was an unknown factor. Dalton was in the past, but Felix was here now. And Chandler had no idea how or when theyโd met. That sense of being completely in the dark unsettled him.
Seeing Felix hold Meryl, hearing him profess his feelings, had nearly driven Chandler to the brink. He couldnโt understand how their relationship reached such an intimate level. Felix had expressed his concern and admiration for Meryl, which made Chandler really uncomfortable. He didnโt like the feeling of his wife being coveted by others.
But as a mature man, despite his jealousy, Chandler wanted to understand what had happened. He had to know the truth. Meryl was someone he cared about. He didnโt want to vent his negative emotions on Meryl; it wouldnโt help their relationship but would instead consume their love.
Keeping his voice steady, he pressed her again. โMeryl, when did you two meet?โ
Merylโs reply was soft. โWe met once, a long time ago. In prison.โ
Chandlerโs eyebrows shot up. โAnd now? Whatโs your relationship?โ
โThereโs nothing between us,โ she said firmly. โHe was my patient. I treated his injury and helped him walk again.โ
Relief washed over Chandler. So, it had all been a misunderstanding.
He reached out and held her hand, his tone low and serious. โBut he has feelings for you.โ
Meryl set down her fork and looked him straight in the eye. โI canโt control what others feel. But I can promise you, Iโve done nothing wrong. Now, what about you? Didnโt you say you wouldnโt meet Rachel alone again? Why were you with her tonight?โ
Her big eyes brimmed with unshed tears, and her voice trembled with hurt.
