Chapter 694 Disappointed
Walter hadnโt expected that right after giving birth, Meryl wasnโt thinking about her newborn but was instead set on seeing Felix.
He hesitated before saying, โMr. Powellโs surgery is over. He should be resting in his room now.โ
Felix had undergone a long surgery yesterday. He had suffered severe internal bleeding, had his blood replaced twice, and several of his organs were damaged to varying degrees. The car accident was horrific. Worse, instead of staying still after the collision, Felix had moved. That caused secondary injuries.
Even the doctors said that Felix had survived by sheer luck. But surviving the surgery was just the beginning. The recovery would be the real challenge. Before going into surgery, he had been in shock. Although the procedure had been successful, the doctors couldnโt predict when he might regain consciousness.
When the wheelchair reached the door of Felixโs hospital room, Meryl suddenly froze, gripped by fear.
She hesitated outside for a long time, unable to bring herself to go in. She wasnโt sure how to face Felix. Guilt consumed her, and she dreaded seeing him in such a fragile state because of her.
The sound outside caught Philipโs attention. He gently pushed the door open and stepped out. When he saw Meryl, he paused in surprise. โMrs. Aniston, youโre here to see Mr. Powell?โ
Since Felixโs accident last night, no one from the Powell family had shown up. They didnโt care whether Felix lived or died. Not even a single word of concern. Philip knew Meryl had just given birth and should be resting. He hadnโt expected her to come.
It warmed his heart. At least someone genuinely cared about Felix. He felt sure Felix would be overjoyed when he found out.
โHow is he?โ Meryl asked.
Philip hesitated, unsure how to respond. Taking the wheelchair from Griselda, he pushed Meryl into the room. โYou should see for yourself.โ
The smell of antiseptic filled the air. Felix lay pale and motionless on the bed, his eyes tightly shut. The room was sparsely furnished and so cold it felt piercing. Meryl instinctively hunched her shoulders. Looking at the once unruly man now so frail, she felt an ache in her chest. If he hadnโt shielded her from the crash, Felix wouldnโt be lying there like this.
โMrs. Anistonโฆโ Philip began. Since Felixโs accident, Philip had been keeping watch alone. Now that Meryl was here, he finally had someone to talk to. โMr. Powellโs injuries are severe. The doctors said his future life might be affected.โ
Meryl reached out, placing her hand lightly on Felixโs wrist. Time seemed to slow as her brow furrowed deeper. She could feel how fragile his condition truly was. Several internal organs still had bleeding points. Although the surgery had stitched up the wounds, his spleen was ruptured. The doctors had opted for conservative treatment, stopping the bleeding, but heโd need a long time to recover fully.
Meryl felt a sudden urge to cry. Felix had always been a vibrant person. Now, his hand felt cold to the touch. She gently tucked his hand back under the blanket.
Philip spoke again. โThe one responsible for all this was Rocky. He was arrested by the police yesterday, but I heard he committed suicide in jail. Mrs. Aniston, are youโฆ are you crying?โ
Seeing tears roll down Merylโs cheeks, Philip hurriedly handed her a tissue.
โMrs. Aniston, you just gave birth. You shouldnโt cry,โ he said.
Philip wasnโt great at comforting women. He had no idea why Meryl had suddenly started crying and looked completely lost. Meryl took the tissue, dabbed at her eyes, and forced herself to swallow the lump in her throat. Her tears came from a mix of emotions.
Chandler had shown no concern for her, but Felix, this fool, had risked his life to shield her from harm. Thinking of how Chandler hadnโt appeared since her accident, she felt deeply disheartened. Even Philip, who barely knew her, understood that she was emotionally fragile after childbirth and shouldnโt be crying. Yet Chandler hadnโt even come to see her.
โRocky committed suicide? Heโs dead?โ Meryl asked.
Philip nodded.
Something felt off to Meryl. Someone as ruthless and self-serving as Rocky, who had even harmed his foster sister for profit, didnโt seem like the type to kill himself out of guilt.
โWhat was the cause of death?โ she pressed.
โAsphyxiation. I heard he strangled himself in his cell,โ Philip replied.
Merylโs suspicions deepened.
โIโll step out for a bit and come back later,โ she said. She wanted to retrieve her medical acupuncture kit. She felt perhaps medical acupuncture could help Felix wake up sooner.
When Meryl stepped out of the room, Walter immediately approached her. โMrs. Aniston, are you going back to rest?โ
She looked up at him. โRocky is dead?โ
Walter nodded.
โWas it Chandler who had him killed?โ she asked.
Rocky had committed countless crimes and tried to harm her multiple times. Someone like him deserved to die. But the way he died seemed too suspicious. Meryl didnโt believe it was a suicide. If Chandler had orchestrated it, it might mean he still cared about her.
Walter pressed his lips. This wasnโt a pleasant topic. He wasnโt sure what Meryl was trying to imply. Worried about tarnishing Chandlerโs image in her eyes, he dodged the question. โMrs. Aniston, you havenโt eaten yet. Please go back and rest. When Mr. Aniston returns, heโll explain everything.โ
โWait for him? Then tell me, when will he be back?โ Meryl asked.
Walter had no answer.
Meryl let out a cold laugh. โYou donโt even know when heโll return, yet you want me to wait? Why is it always me who has to wait? Why should I? Who does he think he is?โ
Walter could tell she was venting. But he genuinely didnโt know Chandlerโs exact situation. Late last night, not long after Walter left, Chandler had sent him a message saying he had a lead on Rachel and was going to rescue her. Heโd asked Walter to arrange a reliable caregiver for Meryl. Walter had done as instructed. But he hadnโt pried into Rachelโs situation. Now, it was already noon, and Chandler still wasnโt back. Walter understood why Meryl was upset. After all, since Meryl gave birth, she hadnโt seen her husband at all. Any woman would feel uncomfortable in her shoes.
Still, Walter believed Chandler must have his reasons.
โMrs. Aniston, if you want to see Mr. Aniston, I can call him and ask about his situationโฆ urge him to return quickly,โ Walter offered.
โUrge him? No need. I donโt want to see him at all. Whether he comes back or not doesnโt matter to me anymore.โ
Merylโs gaze was icy.
It felt pathetic to rely on an assistant to track down her husbandโs whereabouts. She didnโt want to become a submissive figure in this relationship. She refused to be the resentful, powerless wife waiting for scraps of attention.
โMrs. Anistonโฆโ Walter began.
He could tell Meryl was truly angry this time. A loud argument might have been better. After emotions were vented and tempers flared, things could settle. But the quieter the fury, the more serious the situation. He had no idea what Meryl was thinking or planning.
Meryl said nothing more. She gestured for Griselda to push her away.
Walter felt uneasy and immediately pulled out his phone to call Chandler. But Chandlerโs phone was off.
