Chapter 696 In a Dream

Meryl was hurt by Malcolmโ€™s words. Leaving him and Bianca behind in the hospital room, she walked out without looking back.

Bianca, afraid that any further comments might make Meryl resent her too, stayed silent. Instead, she turned her frustration toward Malcolm.

โ€œWhat on earth were you saying just now? Meryl just survived a car accident and gave birth to a child. Sheโ€™s done a great service to the Aniston family! Chandlerโ€™s absence is his fault, and you dare to blame her instead? How could you?โ€ Bianca scolded.

She feared that the fragile truce they had recently reached with Meryl might be shattered because of Malcolmโ€™s insensitivity.

Malcolm didnโ€™t dare argue. Facing Biancaโ€™s anger, he could only lower his head and admit his mistake.

โ€œI only wanted to encourage her to maintain a good relationship with Chandler. Letโ€™s be honest. Letting our daughter marry into the Aniston family is a big accomplishment for our family,โ€ Malcolm muttered defensively.

โ€œAccomplishment? Marriage is a mutual decision, not some one-sided favor! No matter what, you canโ€™t belittle your daughter. Would you have said the same thing if this had happened to Lydia?โ€ Bianca snapped back.

Malcolm fell silent.

Bianca jabbed a finger at him. โ€œYouโ€™re so unfair! Merylโ€™s endured so much over the years, and as her father, itโ€™s your job to support her!โ€

Looking back on everything, Bianca couldnโ€™t shake the guilt she felt toward Meryl.

Malcolm wasnโ€™t keen on hearing more of this but chose not to argue.

Instead, he shifted the topic. โ€œI think she and Chandler are having problems. Did you notice how upset she got the moment I mentioned him? Do you think their marriage is on the rocks?โ€

Bianca shot him a glare. โ€œShe just gave birth and her husbandโ€™s nowhere to be seen. Who wouldnโ€™t be upset? Chandler is definitely in the wrong here!โ€

As they spoke, Malcolmโ€™s phone rang.

It was Lydia.

โ€œLydia? Whatโ€™s wrong? Alright, weโ€™re at the hospital already. Weโ€™ll come to you right away,โ€ Malcolm said hurriedly before ending the call.

He grabbed Biancaโ€™s arm, urging her to follow him.

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€ Bianca asked.

โ€œLydiaโ€™s in bad shape. The fall she had last night dislocated her pelvis. She was in pain all night. The doctors said they could treat her, but sheโ€™d have to terminate the pregnancy. If she wants to keep the baby, sheโ€™ll have to endure it,โ€ Malcolm explained.

Bianca frowned. โ€œAnd what exactly can we do about it?โ€

โ€œCharlotte wonโ€™t let her deliver early. She says itโ€™s too risky for the baby. Lydiaโ€™s begging us to step in and talk to Charlotte for her,โ€ Malcolm replied.

Lydia was in agony, but she wasnโ€™t even eight months pregnant yet. Charlotte wouldnโ€™t risk the babyโ€™s life by inducing early labor.

To ensure the childโ€™s safety, the doctors refrained from administering strong painkillers as well.

โ€œWeโ€™re her parents. Who else can she rely on right now?โ€ Malcolm said.

Biancaโ€™s expression turned icy.

โ€œOh, now weโ€™re her parents? Malcolm, your double standards are astonishing. Youโ€™ve never been this concerned about Meryl! Sheโ€™s gone through so much, but youโ€™ve never stood up for her. I canโ€™t believe you!โ€ Bianca shot back furiously.

Meryl entered Felixโ€™s hospital room. As she unpacked her acupuncture kit, she asked, โ€œDid anything change while I was away?โ€

Philip shook his head. โ€œIโ€™ve been here the whole time, but Mr. Powell hasnโ€™t moved a muscle.โ€

Meryl nodded. โ€œAlright, help me remove his shirt.โ€

Philip quickly unbuttoned Felixโ€™s shirt, knowing she intended to perform acupuncture.

But as Meryl approached to begin, she froze.

Felixโ€™s torso was covered in scars.

Some of the scars were older, having healed with new skin that was lighter than the surrounding tissue.

Others were fresh wounds, clearly recent, still red with the marks of injury.

She drew a sharp breath. She had never imagined his body would bear so many wounds.

Philip sighed quietly, โ€œMr. Powell has had a few tough years. Most of these scars are from people seeking revenge for things he did for the Powell family.โ€

Meryl pressed her lips together. โ€œCouldnโ€™t he just stop doing their dirty work?โ€

The Powell familyโ€™s history was murky. Though theyโ€™d cleaned up their image a decade ago, their methods often skirted the edges of legality.

Philip hesitated before replying, โ€œMrs. Aniston, the Powell familyโ€™s affairs areโ€ฆ complicated. Youโ€™ll understand in time. Mr. Powell doesnโ€™t have much of a choice.โ€

Meryl didnโ€™t press further.

She stepped closer to Felix and began the treatment, her hands steady and precise.

Philip watched nervously, keeping a close eye on Felixโ€™s condition.

He was concerned that Meryl, still recovering from childbirth, might not feel well herself, so he suggested she sit on the bed.

Half an hour later, the session ended.

Meryl began to wrap up her work.

However, despite finishing the procedure, Felix remained unresponsive.

Philipโ€™s face turned pale. His eyes reddened, and he nearly broke into tears.

โ€œMrs. Aniston, do you think Mr. Powellโ€ฆ might not make it? He still hasnโ€™t movedโ€ฆโ€ Philipโ€™s voice trembled.

Meryl frowned. โ€œThis is just a supplemental treatment. It might take more sessions to see results.โ€

As she finished speaking, Felixโ€™s eyelashes fluttered.

โ€œMr. Powell!โ€ Philipโ€™s eyes widened, and he was unsure if he was imagining it.

Then Felixโ€™s fingers twitched.

Philip burst into tears of relief. โ€œMr. Powell, you scared me half to death! I thought youโ€™d never wake up!โ€

Felix opened his eyes.

His face was pale, and his usually sharp gaze looked unfocused. His injuries had taken a toll.

Seeing him awake, Meryl let out a breath she hadnโ€™t realized sheโ€™d been holding.

She held up two fingers in front of him. โ€œFelix, how many fingers am I holding up?โ€

Felix rasped, โ€œOne.โ€

Meryl felt her stomach sink.

She tried again, this time holding up five fingers. โ€œAnd now?โ€

โ€œNine,โ€ Felix answered.

Her heart dropped further.

She grabbed his hand, preparing to check his vitals.

She thought, โ€œThis doesnโ€™t make sense. His injuries were internal. They shouldnโ€™t affect his vision. Could it beโ€ฆ the crash damaged his eyes? Or his brain?โ€

As her hand moved closer, Felix suddenly clasped it.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ Meryl asked, startled. She looked at him with a mix of worry and irritation. โ€œDonโ€™t mess around. Your condition is serious. I need toโ€ฆโ€

Felixโ€™s voice was hoarse but teasing. โ€œI can see just fine. I was only messing with you.โ€

He cut her off before she could finish, his tone softening. โ€œSit down. Stay with me for a bit.โ€

Meryl hesitated. โ€œMessing with me? Are you sure? Youโ€™re notโ€ฆ brain-damaged or something?โ€

Felixโ€™s gaze sharpened, and a faint smile played on his lips. โ€œYouโ€™re worried about me.โ€

Meryl frowned. โ€œOf course Iโ€™m worried. You got hurt because of me. Isnโ€™t it normal for me to care?โ€

Her eyes fell on his wrist. โ€œLet go. I need to examine you.โ€

Their eyes met. Felix, still grinning, said playfully, โ€œIf you want to hold my hand, just say so. Let me guess, you fell for me when I saved you? Canโ€™t resist my charm, huh?โ€

Meryl stared at him, speechless.

Even in this state, he still had the energy to joke.

Judging by his clear speech and coherent thoughts, she had to admit he seemed fine.

Felixโ€™s hospital gown hung loosely on his shoulders. He didnโ€™t bother adjusting it, lying there with his usual nonchalance.

Yet the pallor of his face gave him a fragile air.

It seemed like he lacked the strength to resist anything.

His gaze lingered on her face, and a sly smile formed on his face.

โ€œYou tried so hard to keep your distance from me, and now youโ€™re here, worrying about me. Tell me, if I never woke up again, would you regret it, crying and begging to marry me?โ€ Felix teased.

Meryl rolled her eyes. โ€œYouโ€™ve got quite the imagination. Have you been daydreaming too much?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ Felix chuckled, his voice low and laced with amusement. โ€œIโ€™ve done plenty of things with you in my dreams.โ€
