Chapter 722 The Interview
Chandlerโs fierce kiss left no room for resistance, utterly claiming Meryl. With the light behind him, his towering figure cast a shadow over her, wrapping her in his presence. In that instant, it felt as if she had been drawn into a vast and inescapable abyss.
Chandlerโs breath, hot and heavy, landed on her neck without missing a beat. The proximity made her cheeks burn, yet her back was pressed against the icy wall. The contrast between heat and cold sent sharp waves of sensation through her body.
He was kissing her, yet Meryl could feel the overwhelming sadness radiating from him.
Chandler insisted she had been making a fool of him, yet she couldnโt understand what he was accusing her of. She attempted to push him away, but not only did she fail, his kiss grew even fiercer. It was as if he was releasing all the resentment and turmoil bottled up inside him, letting it spill into every forceful touch.
Things were quickly spiraling out of control. The moment Meryl felt his large hand sliding along her waist, creeping under her clothes, her heart skipped a beat.
Without hesitation, she slapped Chandler across the face. โI just gave birth, Chandler! What the hell do you think youโre doing?โ Biting her lip, she shot him a glare before turning and storming back into the room.
The slap sobered Chandler up a little, snapping him out of his drunken haze. Now, standing alone in the hallway, he looked momentarily dazed.
There was no denying that he had lost himself in the kiss. Meryl was still recoveringโof course, he wouldnโt actually touch her. But the alcohol had clouded his judgment just now.
Chandler looked over to the tightly shut door, and his Adamโs apple bobbed. If this had been before, he probably would have knocked on the door right away, gone inside, and told Meryl it wasnโt intentional.
But maybe today had just been too much. Maybe it was the alcohol dulling his senses. Either way, Chandler had no energy left for explanations. His head felt heavy, and after a momentโs hesitation, he turned away and walked into the study.
Meanwhile, Meryl leaned against the door, listening to the sounds in the hallway. She had thought he would come after her, try to coax her like he had every other day. But after a few minutes, the footsteps had long since faded, and the knock she was waiting for never came.
Frowning in confusion, she cracked the door open and peeked outside. The studyโs light was on, but the hallway was empty.
Merylโs gaze lowered slightly at the sight, a flicker of disappointment crossing her face. A faint mist gathered in her eyes, but the sadness didnโt last long. It was because just then, her alarm went off.
There was a time difference overseas, and right now, it was daytime abroad. It also happened to be the time for Merylโs interview with Brookstone College of Music.
She closed the door, changed her clothes, and turned on her computer. A video call soon popped up. Once she answered it, several foreign faces appeared on the screen.
Meryl immediately recognized themโalmost all of them were renowned musicians. She hadnโt expected the schoolโs interview panel to be made up of industry heavyweights. A mix of surprise and excitement washed over her.
By the time the interview ended, more than an hour had passed. Since she had been brought back to the Stone Villa, Meryl had attended an international school. As a result, her Vexlan was quite decent, allowing her to communicate with foreigners with ease.
It was already three in the morning by then. Meryl turned off her computer, lay down on her bed, and quickly drifted into a deep sleep.
The next day, when Meryl woke up, the sun was already high in the sky. Chandler seemed to be out. Yesterday, he had made her breakfast before leaving. But today, there was nothing. Breakfast had been prepared by the maternity nurse, Griselda, instead. Meryl lowered her gaze slightly, a faint sense of disappointment settling in her chest.
Meryl freshened up quickly and got ready to head out. Last nightโs interview had gone pretty well, and the admission results would be released in a week. By then, she should have already recovered.
Felix was still in the hospital, and it had been days since she last gave him medical acupuncture. She wanted to check on him. Plus, she hadnโt been able to get in touch with her sonโs attending physician yesterday, which left her feeling uneasy.
Even though the doctor finally replied in the middle of the night, saying the baby was recovering well, Meryl couldnโt shake the feeling that something was off. She needed to go to the hospital and see for herself.
She hadnโt expected that the moment she stepped out, sheโd run right into John. He frowned and asked, โWhy are you out in the cold, Meryl? Whereโs Chandler? He didnโt come with you?โ
Meryl replied, โChandler left early in the morning.โ
Johnโs frown deepened. โHe left again? He wasnโt there when you got into that car accident, and now heโs not around while youโre in confinement? What kind of husband does that?โ
Although Chandler had won John over a few months ago by gifting him a luxury car, John had his principles. If Chandler ever treated his sister poorly, heโd be the first to step in.
Right now, John was a little annoyed. Meryl, on the other hand, simply lowered her eyes silently.
She had already noticed something off about Chandler when he came home last night. However, she didnโt press him about it. She murmured, โMaybe something happened at work.โ
After all, Galaxy Holdings Group was a massive corporation, and as its boss, Chandler had a packed schedule. The fact that he managed to carve out a few days to spend with Meryl was already a rare thing.
John didnโt dwell on it further. He patted the passenger seat and asked, โWhere do you need to go? Iโll take you.โ
The two of them then headed to the hospital together. Meryl went straight to her sonโs attending doctor, requesting to see her child. But this time, no matter what she said, the doctor refused.
She frowned and asked in confusion, โI saw him last time. Why canโt I see him now?โ
The child had just undergone heart surgery yesterday and was still under observation. With monitors tracking his vital signs closely, there was no way they could let Meryl in so casually.
However, since Chandler had explicitly told them to keep the childโs condition a secret, the doctor didnโt explain much. He simply said, โThe child is undergoing treatment right now. Itโs not a good time to visit. If you want to see him, come back in a few days.โ
She hesitated, feeling uneasy. โWhat kind of treatment? Is something wrong?โ
The doctor reassured her, โNo, itโs just a routine checkโup. Donโt worry, heโs recovering well.โ
