Chapter 223: Colton's expression darkened instantly, as if the words had unearthed a deep, buried anguish.

"Allison's just a woman chasing after money," he said bitterly, revealing the core of their divorce and Allison's drastic transformation as she pursued social advancement.

His gaze turned cold. "So why should I let her go?" His reaction was a clear trigger, especially at the mention of Allison's name. It ignited a surge of anger tinged with possessiveness. How could Allison, after everything they'd shared, move on so quickly, especially to Kellan? Colton's face remained impassive.

"I'll make sure Ontdale knows that Allison's a gold digger who tried to bleed me dry."

Melany adjusted his blanket, her lips curling into a subtle smile. "Allison probably didn't mean to. Growing up an orphan, she must think that money equals security. It's natural." She smoothly shifted the topic.

"Lindy gave me grief today about aiming for the GM role, calling it unrealistic. Maybe she's right. Should I start from the bottom, Colton?" Melany leaned gently against him, her expression innocent. "Lindy can be quite controlling when she feels like it, but I don't want to come between you two."

Since Colton's heart seemed elsewhere, why not reap some benefits? Already seething, Colton frowned. Remembering Lindy's scolding, he coldly replied, "I'm the acting CEO. Since when does a branch's staffing concern anyone but me? Not even my mother can do that!" His frustration deepened. "Is she going to control me forever?"

Melany thoughtfully massaged his head. "Softening up wouldn't hurt. Lindy has her struggles. Your dad's hardly ever home, and she can't flaunt her new man the way your father does." Her voice was soft and soothing, like a gentle melody. "I also heard that Lindy wants to bring him into the company. Maybe if we help him out, she'll ease up on me."

Colton's anger buzzed, nearly overwhelming him. Melany noticed but remained composed, snuggling closer.

"Colton, sometimes I pity you. Keanu's dismissive, your dad's off with his illegitimate children, and even Lindy's not fully with you. And Allison…" Her voice turned sweet, like honey. "Forget her. Since the split, she's been out to get you. I wish I could do more for you, share your burdens, and walk this road together." Melany embraced Colton tightly, her alluring voice whispering in his ear. "Colton, I'm the only one standing by your side. I promise I'll never leave you, no matter what."
