Listen to this chapter:

Colton, caught between protecting Melany and the unfolding mess, suppressed his frustration.

โ€œLetโ€™s not dredge up the past,โ€ he said, his voice tense. โ€œBesides, Melany didnโ€™t steal or copy anything. She simply added to your original formula. Now that itโ€™s in the public domain, the formula is worthless. Still, Iโ€™m willing to offer you $200,000 in compensation.โ€ The last sentence was a bitter swallow, each word dragged out through clenched teeth. โ€œLetโ€™s end it here. We can still leave with our heads held high.โ€

Melanyโ€™s eyes shone with unshed tears; she looked deeply wronged. โ€œThis isnโ€™t Allisonโ€™s fault. Itโ€™s my fault for creating this misunderstanding. Allison has been hiding her identity as the famous perfumer, Scarlet Snake, for years, and Iโ€™ve always admired her. Thatโ€™s why I studied her techniques.โ€

Melany conveniently sidestepped the real issue, diverting attention from her dishonesty. The public remained skeptical, their silence heavy with doubt. Noticing this, Melany burst into tears, quickly playing the victim.

โ€œAllison,โ€ she said, her voice shaking with manufactured emotion, โ€œI know you never liked me, thinking I wrecked your marriage. Iโ€™ve carried that guilt. I understand why youโ€™re lashing out now, because Colton and I are about to get married.โ€

She dropped to her knees, her sobs echoing through the room, portraying herself as a sacrificial lamb. โ€œAllison, if this is what it takes to make amends, I will do it. But please, donโ€™t bring Colton into this. You know how much this competition means to himโ€ฆโ€

He twisted the narrative with the skill of a seasoned storyteller, presenting the scandal as a love triangle.

Rebecca, fed up, retorted, โ€œWhat a nerve! Plagiarism is plagiarism. Stop diverting attention from the truth!โ€

Allison, cold as ice, added, โ€œMelany, no matter how you spin it, cheating and stealing ideas will be dealt with according to the contest rules.โ€ Her gaze shifted to Colton; her tone was sharp and unyielding. โ€œAs for you, staying friends after a divorce? Thatโ€™s for people who enjoy entangled lives.โ€

โ€œDragging me into your mess is disgusting,โ€ Allisonโ€™s words cut through the air like a blade, leaving Colton and Melany reeling, faces flushed with embarrassment.

Coltonโ€™s face darkened; his voice rose. โ€œWe can settle this later, but for the record, Melany didnโ€™t cheat. If you actually read the rulesโ€ฆโ€

His defense was cut short as the crowd fell silent, parting like the sea before a storm.

โ€œMr. Blakely,โ€ a staff member announced as a curly-haired man approached with a wide, friendly smile.

โ€œKellan, itโ€™s great to see you here,โ€ the man said casually. โ€œAre you still hoping Iโ€™ll invest in your company?โ€

Next to Kellan stood Ferdinand Blakely, who smirked. โ€œStrange, isnโ€™t it? The Everett Group always backs new talent, but with the Lloyd familyโ€™s wealth, you wouldnโ€™t think my investment necessary.โ€

The room murmured; Ferdinand, president of the Everett Group, was known for being sharp and shrewd. Today, however, he radiated an oddly disarming warmth.

But beneath her sparkling eyes and easy smile lay a sharp edge. โ€œI think youโ€™re using the competitionโ€™s publicity to launch your new perfume, Charisma. How timely, donโ€™t you think?โ€

Kellan laughed, unfazed. โ€œYouโ€™re not missing a thing, Ferdinand.โ€

Allison watched calmly, noting the camaraderie between the two men. Ferdinand turned to her with a smile that didnโ€™t reach his eyes. โ€œMiss Clarke, I presume. Iโ€™ve heard a lot about you, winner of the first Perfumery Competition.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m flattered, Mr. Blakely,โ€ Allison replied politely, though she sensed a distance, a barrier he maintained.

He sighed, as if bored. โ€œItโ€™s a shame the contest has been marred by unqualified entrants. Itโ€™s damaged its reputation.โ€

His gaze drifted to Melany; his voice dropped to a chilling tone. โ€œAnd if thereโ€™s one thing I canโ€™t stand, itโ€™s dishonesty. So, Miss Johnson, isnโ€™t it time you offered a proper apology?โ€
