Chapter 19

It was their second year together. After months of planning and consulting with those closest to him, Louis had finally put together the perfect proposal. From choosing the location to the decorations, he had handled everything personally. A proposal needed to be surprising, so he couldn’t tell Cersei. But the reason for inviting her out couldn’t be too casual either—no one wants to look disheveled during a proposal. He had visited countless places before everything was settled. Even before proposing, he had specifically taken her to a candlelit dinner. Back then, she had been curious, repeatedly asking what special occasion warranted such formality. Only when the first rose was delivered to her hand did she finally sense what was happening. Even now, remembering the stars in her eyes as she looked at him, he still felt overwhelmed with happiness.

How had they ended up like this? How could she be marrying someone else? Louis couldn’t understand. Perhaps due to the severity of his injuries, or because Louis wasn’t eager to recover, he remained hospitalized much longer than expected. Only he knew that he had delayed the treatment on purpose, just to see her. Even if she did nothing or said nothing, just quietly sitting there was enough for him. But despite this delay, the day of discharge eventually arrived.

Chapter 19

Cersei and Hurley came to pick him up together. Sitting in the back seat of the car, Louis felt a momentary daze. The scene was familiar. He thought for a long time before finally remembering where he had seen this scene before. It was during that period when she was about to leave him. At the time, in the midst of it, he hadn’t noticed anything wrong. But looking back now, he realized that she had been injured unusually often. He had ignored her pain, repeatedly bringing Violet before her. Even when picking her up from the hospital, he had brought Violet along.

How similar was that scene to these recent days? But the biggest difference was… Hurley Moore was now her legitimate fiancé, and no one could question them sharing a room together. As for him? Bearing the title of her husband, he had spent all his time with another woman. Cersei must have been in so much pain back then. Through the rearview mirror, Louis looked at Cersei in the front, remaining silent for a long while.

Soon, the car stopped at the Harris mansion. He got out and allowed Cersei and Hurley to escort him to the door. As they turned to leave, he suddenly called out to her.

“Cersei.”

She paused and turned back to look at him, confusion in her eyes.

“Could I speak with you alone?” Sensing her hesitation, he quickly added, “Just for a moment. It won’t take long.”

Cersei hesitated but stayed.

Chapter 19

It was hard to define the emotions in her heart. The feelings from back then had been so profound that even after three years, she couldn’t simply let go. She still harbored resentment, yet because of the knife he had taken for her that birthday night, there was a complicated mix of emotions.

“I’m sorry, Cersei. Only today have I realized how much damage I’ve caused you with my actions.” Louis said with a bitter smile, his eyes filled with the last glimmer of hope.

“If we can’t return to how we were before, then… could we at least be friends?”

The moment the words left his mouth, Louis regretted them. He knew he could never let go of Cersei, so whether she accepted or rejected his offer, it would be too cruel for him. He couldn’t stand that she loved another. Or that from now on, her world would have no place for him.

Cersei remained silent for a long time before shaking her head. Rejecting his proposal without mercy.

“Louis Harris, I can’t forgive you.”
