Listen to this chapter:

A black Lamborghini pulled up to the door, and Chris Richards, Kelvin's assistant, stood solemnly beside it. He respectfully opened the car door as Kelvin and Cheyenne approached.

"Go to the law firm first," Kelvin ordered coldly.

Cheyenne smiled, a dimple appearing on her cheek. She seemed unfazed by the impending divorce. She intentionally sat to Kelvin's left, attempting to draw closer, though he remained distant.

An oppressive silence fell over the car once it started moving. Kelvin stared out the window, seemingly eager to reach City Hall. Suddenly, a screech of tires followed by an emergency stop sent Cheyenne lurching toward him. He avoided her, allowing her to hit the door handle.

"Bang!"

The sound was sharp. A bruise blossomed on her delicate forehead.

Seeing the bruise, Kelvin felt a fleeting pang of something akin to sympathy, but quickly dismissed it. He considered Cheyenne a "dirty and despicable woman" undeserving of his compassion.

"I… I'm sorry, Mr. Foley. Someone crossed the road," Chris stammered, clearly frightened. He visibly relaxed only when Kelvin spoke again.

Cheyenne, holding her head, looked at Kelvin's cold expression with bright, hurt eyes. "You're heartless," she said. "I've been your wife for three years. Haven't we spent more than one night together? And you let me hit the door?"

Kelvin had been forced by his grandfather to marry Cheyenne and to have sex with her monthly. The thought filled him with resentment. His face darkened, and he shouted, "Shut up! If it weren't for my grandfather, women like you would disgust me."

"Disgust" Cheyenne laughed, a sadness clouding her eyes. Kelvin found her smile unsettling—self-deprecating, disdainful, and inexplicably sad. Her bruised face evoked a flicker of pity in him. He immediately dismissed it, blaming her exceptional acting skills for his grandfather's insistence on the marriage.

They arrived at the law firm where Kelvin's lawyer awaited. The lawyer presented Cheyenne with the divorce agreement. "Miss Lawrence," he said, "you and Mr. Foley were married a short time, have few property disputes, and have no children. Mr. Foley has agreed to a considerable alimony payment."

Cheyenne's bitter smile at the mention of "no children" was telling. Kelvin had always taken precautions against pregnancy, even when pressured by his grandfather. She had never wanted to use a child as leverage.

Without looking at the agreement, she declared, "I don't want alimony."

Kelvin sneered. "What are you pretending? Didn't you marry me for the Foley family's money?" His words cut her deeply.

Tears welled in her eyes, but when she looked up, her almond-shaped eyes held a smile. "That's right," she said indifferently. "I'm as materialistic and fickle as you say. Mr. Foley, you're handsome and always right!"

Her detached attitude frustrated Kelvin. "Do what you like," he said, gesturing to his lawyer to amend the agreement.

They signed the papers. As Cheyenne officially became single again, a wave of sadness washed over her. She had been married to Kelvin for three years, but had loved him for far longer.
