Chapter 27: I Only Have One Mother
It happened too fast; Selah was only twenty years old when he wrote this list. Cheyenne had just turned twenty-one.
"Thank you, Grandpa," Cheyenne said, eagerly taking the list of dowry items from him.
As she opened it, she saw a neatly written note in Layne's elegant handwriting. Malaya's face suddenly went pale. She never expected Layne to have kept this list for over twenty years and still remembered every detail!
Malaya was confident she had retrieved all the items. However, as this thought crossed her mind, she heard Cheyenne's distressed voice. "Grandpa, something is wrong! I just checked the list and realized we're missing a pair of nephrite lions."
"Really? Let me see. Those nephrite lions were your mother's favorite toys when she was little. Take another look."
Layne was furious. He had personally carved those lions and given them to his daughter, Selah, on her first birthday!
"I swear I don't have them, and I've never seen them before!" Cheyenne said, searching through the boxes. Nephrite lions…
It brought back memories for George. He first met Malaya at an art exhibition. She had displayed a pair of jade lions, claiming them as her artwork, which captivated everyone. Her confident and charming demeanor attracted him, and they quickly connected.
Later, he apparently gave those jade lions to Malaya's father. His company was just starting, and he couldn't afford a better gift. Thoughtful Malaya used her own "artwork" as a gift, allowing him to present it to her father.
When George returned home, Selah cried over the missing toy, but he had no patience for her distress and left her alone.
