Chapter 191

Elvira sent the video of Amber sleeping with another man to Karen and felt a surge of satisfaction. She anticipated a positive outcome. She then received a call from an unknown number—Sandy Miles. Sandy informed her that Rowena had been in a car accident, breaking her leg, and was in the hospital, requesting Elvira's presence.

“I’m quite busy right now. I’m not free,” Elvira replied.

“Elvira, she’s your mother. Even if she married into our family, our family isn't related to her by blood. Are you sure you don’t care about her?” Sandy asked with a sneer.

“You also said she married into your family. She treats you as her biological daughter now. It’s enough that she has you to take care of her,” Elvira retorted, ending the call.

Shortly after, her phone rang again, this time from an unknown number. It was Rowena.

“Elvira, my leg is broken and my ribs are fractured. Can you come and see me? Mommy knows my mistake. I don’t know who’s sincere about this. I just got into trouble and can’t do anything. Sandy doesn’t care about me anymore; she doesn’t even want the nurse to come and take care of me. Elvira, Mommy apologizes to you. Can you come to the hospital and help me with the procedures?” Rowena cried miserably.

Elvira remained silent, studying her phone. Was this real or fake? Had she truly fallen out with Sandy? Rowena continued her pitiful act. Elvira finally said, “Alright, I’ll be there in a while. Wait for me.”

Elvira grabbed her bag and left the company after instructing her secretary. Walking toward the elevator, she saw Carmen waiting. She greeted her. “Carmen, where are you going?”

Carmen lowered her head. “I’m taking leave to go to the hospital.”

“That’s great. I’m going to the hospital too. Let’s go together.”

The elevator arrived. Elvira entered first, followed by Carmen, who thanked her.

“Thank you.”

“Carmen, you don’t have to be so polite with me.” Elvira pressed the elevator button.

Carmen kept her head down, her inferiority complex seemingly weighing heavily on her. Alone in the elevator, she finally looked up at Elvira and said, “You and Zach are very compatible.”

Elvira was surprised. She smiled. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. I’m serious. They’re very compatible,” Carmen repeated softly.

Elvira looked at the slightly older woman and felt a pang of emotion. Initially, she’d viewed Carmen as a threat, someone who might steal Zach. But she’d had no such intention; in fact, she avoided Zach whenever possible. On the other hand, none of the Millers were good people; they had caused Carmen immense suffering, both physically and emotionally with the loss of her child.

When they arrived at the hospital, they separated—Carmen to receive an infusion, Elvira to visit Rowena.

Upon entering Rowena's room, Elvira found her lying alone in bed, one leg in a cast, her face etched with pain.

“Elvira, you’re finally here. I’m really feeling terrible. Come and talk to me.” Rowena's eyes lit up at the sight of Elvira.

Elvira looked around the ward and said with a smile, “Your stepdaughter is really not around. She broke up because of this small car accident? Is that true?”

To be honest, it was a little ridiculous to fall out over such a minor car accident. Only Rowena would dare to lie like that.

“Elvira, how could Mommy lie to you? I finally saw clearly that it’s useless no matter how much I pour out my heart and soul for someone who’s not related by blood. When I subconsciously pulled Sandy to block the car accident today, causing her to hit her head, she grabbed me and scolded me. She scolded me for wanting to kill her and disfigure her. I am so heartbroken. I’m so good to her, but she scolded me over such a small matter. I’m really…” Rowena cried.

Elvira listened quietly, observing her mother's performance. She wasn't sure if Rowena's words were true but chose to remain a detached observer in this drama between her mother and stepsister.

“Even if you fell out with Sandy, your new husband should treat you very well. He shouldn’t even have a servant, right?” Elvira asked.

“He’s gone overseas. I can’t contact him at all. If I could, Sandy wouldn’t dare to do this to me,” Rowena said helplessly.

“Is that so? Then why did you call me here? Your cast has been applied and you’re staying in the hospital. If there’s nothing else, I’m leaving,” Elvira asked with a smile.

Rowena looked at her daughter, still smiling serenely despite her mother's distress, and felt a pang of something akin to a heart attack.

“I’m too bored by myself. I don’t have any friends in the country. Just talk to me. It’ll be noon soon. Help me buy a meal. Otherwise, I won’t even be able to eat.” Rowena looked at Elvira pitifully.

Elvira almost laughed. Rowena's acting was superb.

“I hire a caregiver to take care of you 24 hours a day. No matter what, you are my biological mother. I’ll pay for it. Don’t worry,” Elvira said, rising to find a caregiver.

“Even a nurse can’t chat with me. Besides, how can a nurse be as considerate as my daughter? Elvira, you really don’t want to care about me.” Rowena continued her aggrieved display.

“I’m not free, I…”

“What can happen to an unemployed person like you? How about this? I’ll hire you as my nurse, and I’ll pay you three times your salary. How about that?” Rowena interrupted, the slight in her words making Elvira feel absurd.

“Ms. Smart, my husband is Zach Gilbert! Do you think I’m short of money? The cards my husband gave me are all given without a limit. How can I like the three fruits and two dates you gave me? What are you thinking?” Elvira stated, unwilling to explain her company ownership to her mother. Let her think what she wants.

Rowena, oblivious to her daughter's actual circumstances, continued her desperate act of seeking sympathy.

“Elvira, didn’t I tell you that if you’re not capable, men will run away sooner or later! You can’t control Zach. If she really…”
