Chapter 211
Zach responded gloomily. His reluctance was evident. He only agreed to cooperate with her. Zach turned over, pressing her down. He lowered his head and kissed her.
Elvira was sending samples to a major jewelry client that day. Before they left, her accompanying secretary suffered a sudden allergic reaction. Her body was covered in rashes, and she looked quite frightening. Elvira quickly arranged for someone to take her to the hospital.
The secretary couldn't accompany her, and Elvira couldn't find a replacement. Just as she was searching for a solution, she saw Carmen, who had just finished printing some information. Carmen looked different; her clothes were unfamiliar.
Previously, Carmen had always given Elvira a somewhat drab impression. Today, however, she seemed brighter, radiating an extra layer of vitality.
“Carmen, stop what you’re doing and come with me to the client’s company,” Elvira said, deciding against seeking further assistance. Carmen was more flexible with her work and the most suitable person to bring along.
“Alright, I’ll come as soon as I put these things down,” Carmen agreed.
Elvira took Carmen to the client’s company. En route, Carmen accidentally spilled her drink on Elvira’s clothes. Carmen quickly apologized, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t do it on purpose. Are you alright?”
“I’m fine. It’s just that my clothes are wet. It’s alright,” Elvira replied, taking out a tissue to wipe the spill. She was wearing white, so the stain was quite noticeable.
“You’re meeting an important client soon. I’m so sorry. Why don’t you wear my coat? I just bought it today. It’s completely fresh,” Carmen offered, quickly taking off her coat and handing it to Elvira.
“How can I do that? What will you wear?” Elvira considered buying another coat; wearing such a coat to meet clients would be inappropriate.
“I’ll just wear yours. I’m only your assistant. It’s alright,” Carmen insisted.
Elvira, realizing there was no time to find an alternative, put on Carmen’s coat. It fit well and matched her pants.
When they arrived at the client's company, Carmen got out first, turning to wait for Elvira. After Elvira exited, the driver parked the car, and the two women prepared to walk to the building.
Suddenly, a motorcycle sped past them. Two men were on it. The passenger unexpectedly drew a gun and aimed it at Elvira.
Carmen and Elvira simultaneously turned and saw the scene. Carmen grabbed Elvira’s arm and pulled her sharply away.
The moment the assailant fired, Carmen pulled Elvira close. The shot missed, shattering the building's glass.
Seeing this, the bodyguards rushed forward. One quickly drew his gun and fired, knocking the two men off the motorcycle.
Elvira frowned at the scene, instinctively reaching out to protect Carmen. The bodyguards quickly apprehended the two men.
Just as everyone thought the danger had passed, a gun appeared on a distant building. The muzzle was again pointed at Elvira.
The bullet tore through the air toward Elvira. In a fraction of a second, a large hand grabbed her and pulled her forcefully.
Elvira fell into an unfamiliar embrace. She felt a sharp pain in her arm and looked up to see Leonard. His gaze was sharp as a blade. Carmen was also terrified, watching in shock. The bodyguards were even more frightened; the person they were protecting had been injured again.
“Hurry up and go inside,” Leonard said, pushing Elvira and quickly running upstairs.
Seeing their failure, the assailants ceased fire and quickly retreated.
The bodyguards rushed to protect Elvira and Carmen as they retreated into the building, fearing further danger. They immediately sent Elvira to the hospital. She asked Cole to handle company matters. When Zach heard the news, he rushed to the hospital. This time, his anger was unrestrained. He immediately fired all the bodyguards and ordered them to leave.
This time, he refused to listen to anyone. He dealt harshly with everyone involved.
When Elvira saw Zach like this, her heart ached. She knew how terrible he must be feeling. She extended her uninjured arm to him. Zach approached.
Elvira hugged him with one hand, rubbing her head against his waist. “Don’t be angry. Don’t be angry. Look, I’m fine. It’s just a minor injury.”
Zach regretted his negligence. “I’m sorry. The people I sent are useless. I’ll protect you from now on.” His eyes were red as he looked at her freshly bandaged arm. His heart was breaking.
“As long as you don’t feel sad, I’ll agree to anything you say,” Elvira coaxed, not wanting him to feel too much sorrow.
“I’ve already sent someone to find out who dared to attack you. I won’t let them get away with this,” Zach said, sitting down and looking intently at her, seemingly fearing she might be injured if he blinked.
Elvira nodded. “Alright, I’ll listen to you.” She simply wanted to support him; she had no objections to whatever he decided.
The investigation into the attack concluded swiftly. It was the Miller family who had attacked Elvira, surprising her.
She mused, ‘I don’t seem to have any quarrel with the Miller family. Wasn’t it ridiculous to send someone to shoot me in broad daylight?’
As the investigation deepened, the results became even more unexpected. The intended target of the Miller family's assassination attempt was not Elvira, but Carmen.
Upon learning this, Zach remained perpetually frowning. Elvira explained, “That must be because Carmen and I switched clothes. The assassin mistook me for her, so the gun was aimed at me.”
“Why did you change clothes with her?” Zach felt a constricting discomfort in his chest.
“Carmen accidentally spilled her drink in the car. My clothes were wet, and I couldn’t meet the client like that. Out of respect for the client, Carmen and I switched clothes.”
“When the assassin aimed the gun at me, it was Carmen who pulled me away,” Elvira explained everything, though no one had anticipated a second assassin.
Had Leonard not intervened, she would have died.
“No matter what, the Miller family will die,” Zach declared furiously. Elvira was his ultimate limit, and the Miller family had crossed it. He would make them suffer.
Elvira tried to persuade him to reconsider. After all, it had been many years, and he had always avoided confronting the Miller family.
Dealing with the Millers would be easy, but it would inevitably implicate his stepmother and father. The potential repercussions were unknown, but it would likely negatively affect everyone's lives.
