Chapter 49
Celeste’s hand paused as she held the phone. This was the first time Adrian had ever called her first. If there was nothing urgent, they wouldn’t be calling her repeatedly like this. After a brief hesitation, she pressed the answer button. “Hey, Mr. Wrenford…”
“Dad is having difficulty breathing again. Can you come over?”
Without a second thought, she sprang to her feet. “Alright, I’m on my way.”
She ended the call and quickly went to the cabinet, grabbing her acupuncture needles and cupping tools. She headed straight for the door. As she walked, she called out to Annie, “I have an urgent matter to attend to, and I might not be back tonight. Please take care of Eloise.”
“What happened?” Annie quickly followed her, her brow furrowing with curiosity. “Is it another emergency with Mr. Wrenford Senior?”
“Yes.” Celeste glanced back at her. “I have to go now.”
“Alright, drive safely.”
The sharp bang of the closing door abruptly severed Celeste’s line of sight and muffled Annie’s voice. By the time Celeste got to the Wrenford residence, it was already 8:00 pm. The entire place was brightly lit, and everyone was waiting for her arrival.
“Ms. Morin, you’re finally here.”
Brodie Tanner, seeing Celeste walking in hurriedly with her medical kit, quickly approached her. “How is Alaric now?”
Celeste followed him inside, her voice low but calm. “What’s his condition?”
“He started having trouble breathing right after dinner. We were planning to send him to the hospital, but Mr. Wrenford Senior insisted on not going, saying it would be too much of a burden. He insisted on having you come.”
Celeste nodded without speaking further. As they walked down the corridor and entered the living room, she saw Damien and Margot sitting on the couch, their expressions grim.

Upon seeing her, Damien quickly walked up to her, his eyes filled with resentment she couldn’t ignore. Under Brodie’s guidance, Celeste entered Alaric’s room, where she immediately spotted Adrian. He had been standing by the bed, his hand placed gently on Alaric’s chest, helping him regulate his breathing. When he saw Celeste, he immediately stood up and nodded in acknowledgment.
Celeste sat by the window and began assessing Alaric’s condition. Adrian stood silently by her side, watching her closely. This scene was not missed by Damien, who had been watching from behind. She hadn’t answered any of his calls earlier that day, yet Adrian called once, and she rushed over immediately. When had they become so close?
“Leave one person here to help me hold Alaric up. The rest of you, please leave.” Celeste’s voice was soft, her face calm and indifferent.
Damien quickly stepped forward. “I’ll stay to help.”
But before he could get close to the bed, Adrian blocked his way. His voice was cold and commanding. “You go. I’ll stay.” The tone was flat but carried an air of authority that no one dared to challenge.
“Uncle Adrian, I’m still married to Celeste. It makes more sense for me to stay and assist her…” Damien started to argue.
“Damien, step outside.” Before Damien could finish his sentence, he was cut off by a sharp voice. Celeste looked up and saw that Margot had entered the room, pulling Damien out with her. Brodie, sensing the heavy atmosphere around Adrian, quickly exited the room, closing the door behind him.
