Chapter 57
“You don’t want your mom to go? You’d rather Lucy be there?” Damien deliberately lowered his voice as he asked Lucian.
Lucian pouted slightly before answering in a matter-of-fact tone. “Mom coming will just embarrass me. But Lucy is different. She’s a movie star and an award-winning actress. If she comes, all my classmates will be so jealous…”
Damien looked down at his son but didn’t respond. Although a door separated them, their conversation had already reached Celeste’s ears. As she tidied her clothes, she caught a glimpse of her reflection in the mirror, and a mocking smile tugged at the corners of her lips. She had already figured out their thoughts. Lucian’s opinion matched Damien’s exactly. Recalling everything from the past, it only seemed more laughable to her now. Lucian was so young, yet he already had such misguided thoughts. Damien never corrected him, letting him act however he pleased. There was only one reason for that: Damien thought the same way.
After quickly finishing up, Celeste went upstairs to check on Alaric’s condition. Once she confirmed that he was fine, she packed up her medical equipment and headed downstairs. When she walked down the stairs, she found that Adrian was already gone. His car wasn’t in the yard, so she figured he must have left early. Damien and Lucian had also already left.
“Ms. Morin,” a familiar voice broke through her thoughts. Celeste looked up and saw Joshua standing by the door. She paused in surprise. “Joshua? Why are you here?”
“I came to pick Mr. Edward up this morning, and he specifically asked me to stay and wait for you. It’s hard to get a cab around here, so he asked me to drive you.”
Joshua’s smile was polite. Celeste, holding her medical equipment in a bag, instinctively tightened her grip on it for a brief moment. She hadn’t expected Edward to arrange for Joshua to stay and drive her. It may be his way of thanking her for rushing over to treat Alaric the previous day.
Chapter 57
It was early in the morning, and since the house was halfway up the mountain, it was indeed hard to get a cab. With a smile, Celeste nodded. “Then thank you, Joshua.”
“You’re welcome.”
After getting into the car, Celeste rolled down the backseat window and inhaled the fresh morning air, feeling the peacefulness of the forest trail around her. It was a welcome change, and her mood lifted instantly.
During the ride, Joshua took a call. At first, Celeste wasn’t paying close attention, just noting that it was from Adrian. But when she heard Joshua mention the name “Shelley,” her heart skipped a beat. Her eyelashes fluttered slightly, and she instinctively shifted her gaze toward the rearview mirror. Joshua was focused on the call, driving, and speaking to Adrian. “Mr. Wrenford, the number is indeed for Shelley. I double-checked with the person in charge, and she didn’t answer the phone yesterday. She must have been busy with something.”
“Alright. Once I drop Ms. Morin off, I’ll find some time to call her.”
Celeste’s brow furrowed involuntarily. She instinctively took out her phone and temporarily disabled her secondary SIM. She did this mainly because she was afraid of a sudden incoming call. If the ringtone went off unexpectedly, it would be hard to explain.
After hanging up, Joshua refocused on the road. The car reached the base of the mountain and was about to merge onto the main road.
