Chapter 98
An open enemy was easier to defeat than a hidden one. From the moment Zander and the others arrived on the scene yesterday, Celeste should have been more cautious. That day’s events had severely impacted the clinic’s business, and revenue was barely a third of what it had been the day before. Although Celeste had Rowan post a notice at the door, foot traffic was still pitifully sparse.
With no business to attend to, Celeste decided to close up early and go pick up Eloise from school. She had just reached the entrance when she spotted a familiar figure. It was Damien. School hadn’t ended yet, and both of them had been waiting by the door.
Back when they were still married, it was usually Celeste who picked up the kids, while Damien rarely bothered with school runs. It seemed that he had at least learned how to be a good father during the years she spent in prison. Still, Celeste thought it was a shame that he never quite figured out how to be a good husband.
“I heard something happened at the clinic,” Damien suddenly stepped closer, his voice low and hushed.
Celeste glanced at him, her tone indifferent. “Your sources are fast, Mr. Wrenford. Who told you? Lucy?”
“This has nothing to do with Lucy,” Damien’s gaze darkened as he looked at her.
“Didn’t she tell you?” Celeste’s lips curled into a cold smile. “The culprit already confessed. It was under Simone’s orders that they targeted my clinic.”
She gave a sly grin. “Mr. Wrenford, you must be familiar with Simone, right? She’s good friends with Lucy.”
“Was Simone behind this?”
“On the surface, it seems like Simone’s doing, but whether someone else was involved is still unclear,” Celeste said, her smile faint. “But don’t worry. I’ll investigate this thoroughly.”
“What do you mean by that? Are you implying that Lucy is involved? She is such a pure and kind-hearted woman. There’s no way she could do something like this.” Damien suddenly grabbed Celeste’s wrist, and his eyes grew colder by the second.
“I never said it was Ms. Vale. There’s no need to panic, Mr. Wrenford.” Celeste tried to shake his hand off, her voice as cold as ice.

But Damien only tightened his grip further. “The ‘someone’ you’re talking about. Aren’t you referring to her?”
“I thought that you had trouble telling right from wrong. I didn’t expect you to be so clear-headed and perceptive. Since that’s the case, why did you insist on standing by her side all those years ago? Was it intentional?” Celeste smirked, her expression calm.
“What nonsense are you spouting?” Damien jerked his hand away, his voice suddenly rising in volume. “Celeste, don’t bring up the past again. I have no interest in discussing it with you.”
“You’re just afraid to face it, aren’t you?” Celeste challenged.
“What are you implying?”
Damien had been ready to leave, but he stopped. He shifted his gaze toward her.
Celeste’s lips curled into a sly smile, the amusement in her eyes growing more intense. “The reason you’re afraid to face the past is that you’re scared I might actually have grievances you’ll need to confront. Or maybe you’re worried about how to handle your ‘crush’ once her image is shattered?”
“That’s not the point. I’m talking about the clinic, not the past!” Damien’s gaze grew colder.
“Well, that’s because this incident is tied to Lucy, which is why I brought up the past!” Celeste’s voice had risen in intensity.
Damien frowned slightly. “Do you have any proof that this is really related to Lucy? Yes, Simone is her best friend, but the culprit confessed that it was Simone’s idea, not Lucy’s!”
