Listen to this chapter:

โ€œMom, you really didnโ€™t have to help me.โ€ I looked back at her, and she laughed. โ€œDid you really think I was going to allow you to move into your dorm without me helping?โ€ My mom carried a box up the steps. โ€œI mean, kindaโ€ฆโ€ I laughed as I unlocked the room. I dropped the box in my hands and turned to look at her. โ€œItโ€™s just for a little while. Itโ€™s not like you wonโ€™t see me again.โ€ My mother dropped her box on the bed and turned to me. โ€œI donโ€™t think thatโ€™s true.โ€ โ€œWhat? Mom, come on.โ€ I shook my head, but she grabbed my hands. โ€œListen to me. I donโ€™t have power like a shaman or like your grandmother, but I have this feeling. Somehow, I know you wonโ€™t be coming home.โ€ I stared at her, and I could see the pain behind her eyes. โ€œI might not come home, but I will still see you. Iโ€™m not going to just up and leave you, Mom.โ€ She wiped at her eye. โ€œYou promise?โ€ โ€œOf course, I do.โ€ I grabbed her and hugged her. โ€œWhat is really bothering you?โ€ She pulled away and looked at my face. โ€œI miss him.โ€ โ€œI know, Mom. But we have a plan, right?โ€ โ€œYes. Yes, we do.โ€ She wiped her face. โ€œI just never thought I would ever have to go a day without either of you in it.โ€ โ€œAnd you wonโ€™t. I will call you every day, and if you ever need me, Iโ€™m there. And we can have a weekly standing appointment to see each other and do something.โ€ โ€œOkay.โ€ My mom smiled and headed to the boxes. โ€œIs there anything else downstairs?โ€ โ€œNope. This is everything.โ€ I grabbed a box and started to unpack it. โ€œAre you nervous?โ€ My mom took her box to the bathroom, and her voice echoed back to me. โ€œA little, if Iโ€™m honest. I donโ€™t know who the surprise teacher is. I honestly donโ€™t know if this course will even be something Iโ€™ll enjoy.โ€ My mom popped her head out. โ€œThen why do it?โ€ I stopped and looked up from the box. โ€œBecause Dadโ€™s life is on the line. Your life is on the line, and my happiness doesnโ€™t hold a candle to that.โ€ โ€œAmy.โ€ She came out of the bathroom and walked over to me, cupping my face. โ€œYour happiness is the most important thing to us.โ€ โ€œI know, but your life, Dadโ€™s life, the pack, is the most important thing to me. And Iโ€™m an alpha. I do what I have to do to make sure the pack thrives.โ€ My mom shook her head and kissed my forehead. โ€œTry to be happy, baby. Thatโ€™s my only wish for you.โ€ โ€œI will be once we figure everything out.โ€ She nodded and headed back to the bathroom.

I emptied the box I was working on and moved to the next. Soon, my room was taking shape. The bed was made, the desk set up, my closet full. I had my regular computer at my momโ€™s, in my safe. I left it there, saying I was going to buy myself a new one. That way, if anyone saw my new computer, they wouldnโ€™t question it.

My father had texted me on my new phone, too. But this one I would keep in the safe worked into the closet. The only good thing that werewolves ever did was became so paranoid that every closet had a safe. But this one was a little tricky. So I bought my own lock box that I stashed in the safe. That way, if anyone broke in and got into the safe provided by the university, I would have an extra layer of protection.

โ€œDo you really think this is necessary? The lock box in the safe?โ€ My mother shook her head. โ€œThe university should have a universal code that unlocks every safe.โ€ My mom nodded, and I saw the moment when that information actually clicked in her head. โ€œSo anyone could potentially get into your stuff.โ€ I nodded. โ€œAnyone on the staff, anyway. This way, my stuff is still protected.โ€ My mother pulled the lock box out of the safe and double-checked it. โ€œWerewolf strength?โ€ โ€œYeah.โ€ I nodded and took it from her hands, sliding it back into the safe and locking it with a new code. โ€œYou really thought of everything, didnโ€™t you?โ€ My mother wrapped her arm around me as she stared at my closet. โ€œNo, but I tried.โ€ โ€œWhat do you think Vince is going to do when he sees your clothes?โ€ She chuckled. โ€œProbably lose his mind, but I refuse to strut around here in designer labels for no reason. Iโ€™m an alpha, not a pony to prance around.โ€ I shook my head. โ€œPlus, if I have to dress up, Iโ€™ll have a reason to come home.โ€ My mom shook her head and kissed my temple. โ€œDonโ€™t poke the bear too much.โ€ I just laughed. Too late.
