Chapter 147

The next few weeks flew by. With classes, training, and calls with everyone, I was insanely busy. Most nights, I did my homework, ate a quick dinner, and crawled into my bed. The calls between Rowan and I became a weekly event. Usually, on the day of class, we would talk about what was going on in the packs.

He told me about the unrest. More and more packs were being targeted for some unknown reason, but my fatherโ€™s pack was targeted the most. One Friday, I got a call from Cas. โ€œHey! Howโ€™s mated life treating you?โ€

โ€œHonestly, itโ€™s been amazing. Greyson has been so supportive.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so happy for you. You deserve the world.โ€

โ€œThanks, but I didnโ€™t call to catch up.โ€ Cassโ€™s voice dropped low. โ€œI was told not to call at all, but since I wasnโ€™t commanded, I think Ronnie understood what I was going to do.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ My stomach dropped.

โ€œWe have been attacked three times since you left, Amy. All rogues, all knowing our old security runs. Ronnie, Greyson, and your dad had to move rotations, run tracks, and pair everyone up. We have been on high alert for the last week.โ€

โ€œWhat? Why wasnโ€™t I informed?โ€ I gripped my phone tightly.

โ€œBecause your dad wants you there at university. You are safe there, plus you are working on figuring out the truth.โ€

I worried at my lip and nearly screamed. โ€œWhy are you calling now?โ€

โ€œBecause your dad was hurt, and Iโ€™m worried.โ€ Cassโ€™s voice dropped low. โ€œThey are using magic against us, and they have been trying to get to the pack house, but I donโ€™t think thatโ€™s what they are after.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œYour dad whispered one word before he was knocked out by the doctor. โ€˜Gazebo.โ€™โ€ I closed my eyes. They were after Carly. But how they found out about Carly already, I had no idea.

โ€œFuck.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Cass answered.

โ€œI have to make a call.โ€ I hung up before she said anything else. I ran to my closet, opened my safe, and grabbed my phone. I quickly cast a sealing spell to seal the room, and I dialed Rowanโ€™s number.

โ€œAmy?โ€

โ€œI need your help.โ€ I rushed out.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Actually, give me a second.โ€ I could hear him pull the phone away from his ear, so I waited. โ€œGet out. I will call you back in once the call is over. No, I donโ€™t care if this meeting is time-sensitive.โ€ He was in the middle of a meeting, and he dismissed them for me. Butterflies were flying around in my stomach, but I shook my head. Men cannot be trusted, even Rowan. Nix and Megan pulled away with that thought. Even they had grown like the man. โ€œSorry about that. I wanted a little privacy. Now tell me whatโ€™s wrong."

โ€œItโ€™s my dadโ€™s pack. They have been attacked a few times since I left.โ€ Rowan was a little too quiet, but I just pushed on. โ€œThis last time, he got hurt.โ€

โ€œPacks are attacked all the time, Amy.โ€ I could hear the regret in his voice.

โ€œI know, and I can understand your need to stay neutral between pack infighting, but these attacks are rogues.โ€

โ€œAre they?โ€ His voice was hinting at something, something I never considered.

โ€œYouโ€™re saying these rogue attacks have been organized by a pack?โ€ I couldnโ€™t help the disbelief in my voice.

โ€œI donโ€™t know. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™ve been working at the school.โ€

His truth hit me like a blow. โ€œYou have been teaching here to get closer to the wolves in the packs.โ€

His sigh was confession enough. โ€œItโ€™s not just your dadโ€™s pack that is being attacked; his just seems like the biggest target. Itโ€™s picked up speed, too, and I donโ€™t know why. Normally, his pack would be attacked once or twice a year, and this year itโ€™s been four times. I donโ€™t know whatโ€™s changed exactly, but something shifted.โ€

I rubbed my face. There was a knock at my door, and I froze. But my room was sealed, and whoever was there couldnโ€™t hear me. โ€œI might know the reason,โ€ I whispered. Another knock, louder this time, had me freezing.

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on there? Whoโ€™s at your door?โ€

โ€œAmy, please talk to me.โ€ The muffled voice had me standing and walking towards the door. I had just made it there to look out the peephole when a third knock, almost a desperate pounding, hit my door. โ€œAmy, please. I want to be with you. Your sister was a mistake.โ€ I looked through the peephole to find Brandon holding roses outside my door.

โ€œWhat did he just say?โ€ Rowanโ€™s voice was lower than I had ever heard it.
