Chapter 180

I looked at Toya and walked over to Rowan. โ€œMy king, is everything okay?โ€

Toya gave a nod. โ€œIโ€™m going to check out the rest of your new place.โ€ She bowed really quickly and then left us in the entryway.

โ€œSterling?โ€ I looked down at my watch. โ€œI donโ€™t know when everyone will get here. Can you go check for me, please?โ€

โ€œOf course, Alpha Amy.โ€ Sterling also gave a bow and then turned and left.

Rowan looked after Toya before he turned to look down at me. โ€œAre you going to tell her?โ€

I nodded. โ€œI feel like I need to.โ€

Rowan took a big breath. โ€œOkay. Who else are you telling? I want to make sure no one else has lost anyone, that way you donโ€™t give anyone hope.โ€

I hadnโ€™t even thought about that. โ€œHanna, Wendy, and Micca.โ€

โ€œWho?โ€ Rowan furrowed his brows.

I opened my mouth, but I realized I didnโ€™t know what pack they were from. โ€œToyaโ€ฆโ€ I called out, and Rowan laughed.

โ€œYou donโ€™t know their packs?โ€

โ€œLook, I met Hanna in the bathroom, but she is the short, unranked wolf from overseas. Wendy is the secretaryโ€™s daughter. Micca is a small redhead from a neighboring pack to Ninaโ€™s. Toyaโ€™s pack was taken in by my father.โ€ I felt like I was forgetting someone.

โ€œThora is the gamma from unranked wolves, but something about her doesnโ€™t sit right with me.โ€ Toya walked out, and I pointed.

Thora, I had forgotten Thora. But just as I thought to call her over, I felt a punch to my gut. โ€œShe isnโ€™t to be included.โ€

โ€œThora?โ€ Rowan furrowed his brows. โ€œYou are sure she said her name was Thora?โ€

I nodded. โ€œBlack hair, blue eyes, beautiful.โ€

I watched Rowanโ€™s face darken. โ€œDonโ€™t speak to her.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ I wasnโ€™t going to anyway, but something about the way his face clouded over pushed me to ask.

โ€œShe is a gamma in my pack,โ€ he answered. โ€œHer parents served my father before he passed, and I kept them on after. Their daughter, Thora, grew into being a second gamma, but because her parents worked in my pack house, she was close to me. Or she thought she was close to me.โ€ Rowan wiped his face. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I thought she got over thisโ€ฆobsession.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I laughed. โ€œWhat does that have to do with me?โ€

โ€œShe probably heard things from Nina and decided you were close to me.โ€ He grimaced. โ€œMoving you here probably hasnโ€™t helped.โ€

โ€œShe knows I moved in here?โ€

Rowan shook his head. โ€œBut this kind of thing doesnโ€™t stay under wraps for long.โ€ He sighed. โ€œMy advice is to stay away from her as much as you can.โ€ He wiped his eyes. โ€œAnd for goddessโ€™s sake, tell her nothing.โ€

โ€œI promise. I will even command everyone to keep their mouths shut,โ€ I offered.

โ€œThank you.โ€ He sagged against the wall, and Toya walked off again. โ€œIโ€™m wiped, but I wanted to check on you.โ€

โ€œEverything is okay here.โ€

He laughed. โ€œYour things are outside your door, but things are okay?โ€

I shrugged a shoulder. โ€œThe only people up here are us, and I trust us.โ€ I smiled as I watched the words land.

โ€œThank you for trusting me.โ€

โ€œOf course. You are my king.โ€

Rowan cut me a look. โ€œThatโ€™s not what I meant.โ€

โ€œI know, and I didnโ€™t mean it either. But I have to poke at you some way.โ€ I smiled and walked closer. โ€œHow are you doing?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine,โ€ he answered automatically.

I focused on the air around us, and I felt a barrier snap into place. โ€œItโ€™s just us.โ€ I grabbed for his hand. โ€œHow are you really doing?โ€

Rowan looked down at our hands clasped together and then back to me, and I watched his facade break. His shoulders slumped, and his face fell. I watched his eyes take on this haunted look. โ€œNot great.โ€

โ€œTalk to me.โ€ I stepped closer and wrapped my arm around his, leaning against his shoulder. I didnโ€™t even think of it, but I also did this with my dad, with Ronnie. I could hear Rowan draw in a breath and then let it out slowly.

โ€œI failed them. They are dead because I havenโ€™t figured everything out yet, and telling everyone today that everyone they love is completely goneโ€ฆโ€ I heard him swallow. โ€œI just failed them. And now I have to go on and face these people like this is completely normal.โ€

I tightened my arms around his. โ€œIn our world, it is.โ€ I looked up at him, and I swore I could see tears fighting to spill over, but in one blink, they were gone. โ€œYou havenโ€™t failed anyone. You were handed a tangled mess when you were a child, and you have been stuck trying to figure it out since then. I know today was hard, but no one can accuse you of not understanding what they feel.โ€ He looked at me. โ€œThis mess started with you losing not just your family, but your entire race. No one has lost more than you. You havenโ€™t failed. And I wonโ€™t let you.โ€
