Chapter 180
I looked at Toya and walked over to Rowan. โMy king, is everything okay?โ
Toya gave a nod. โIโm going to check out the rest of your new place.โ She bowed really quickly and then left us in the entryway.
โSterling?โ I looked down at my watch. โI donโt know when everyone will get here. Can you go check for me, please?โ
โOf course, Alpha Amy.โ Sterling also gave a bow and then turned and left.
Rowan looked after Toya before he turned to look down at me. โAre you going to tell her?โ
I nodded. โI feel like I need to.โ
Rowan took a big breath. โOkay. Who else are you telling? I want to make sure no one else has lost anyone, that way you donโt give anyone hope.โ
I hadnโt even thought about that. โHanna, Wendy, and Micca.โ
โWho?โ Rowan furrowed his brows.
I opened my mouth, but I realized I didnโt know what pack they were from. โToyaโฆโ I called out, and Rowan laughed.
โYou donโt know their packs?โ
โLook, I met Hanna in the bathroom, but she is the short, unranked wolf from overseas. Wendy is the secretaryโs daughter. Micca is a small redhead from a neighboring pack to Ninaโs. Toyaโs pack was taken in by my father.โ I felt like I was forgetting someone.
โThora is the gamma from unranked wolves, but something about her doesnโt sit right with me.โ Toya walked out, and I pointed.
Thora, I had forgotten Thora. But just as I thought to call her over, I felt a punch to my gut. โShe isnโt to be included.โ
โThora?โ Rowan furrowed his brows. โYou are sure she said her name was Thora?โ
I nodded. โBlack hair, blue eyes, beautiful.โ
I watched Rowanโs face darken. โDonโt speak to her.โ
โWhy?โ I wasnโt going to anyway, but something about the way his face clouded over pushed me to ask.
โShe is a gamma in my pack,โ he answered. โHer parents served my father before he passed, and I kept them on after. Their daughter, Thora, grew into being a second gamma, but because her parents worked in my pack house, she was close to me. Or she thought she was close to me.โ Rowan wiped his face. โIโm sorry. I thought she got over thisโฆobsession.โ
โWhat?โ I laughed. โWhat does that have to do with me?โ
โShe probably heard things from Nina and decided you were close to me.โ He grimaced. โMoving you here probably hasnโt helped.โ
โShe knows I moved in here?โ
Rowan shook his head. โBut this kind of thing doesnโt stay under wraps for long.โ He sighed. โMy advice is to stay away from her as much as you can.โ He wiped his eyes. โAnd for goddessโs sake, tell her nothing.โ
โI promise. I will even command everyone to keep their mouths shut,โ I offered.
โThank you.โ He sagged against the wall, and Toya walked off again. โIโm wiped, but I wanted to check on you.โ
โEverything is okay here.โ
He laughed. โYour things are outside your door, but things are okay?โ
I shrugged a shoulder. โThe only people up here are us, and I trust us.โ I smiled as I watched the words land.
โThank you for trusting me.โ
โOf course. You are my king.โ
Rowan cut me a look. โThatโs not what I meant.โ
โI know, and I didnโt mean it either. But I have to poke at you some way.โ I smiled and walked closer. โHow are you doing?โ
โIโm fine,โ he answered automatically.
I focused on the air around us, and I felt a barrier snap into place. โItโs just us.โ I grabbed for his hand. โHow are you really doing?โ
Rowan looked down at our hands clasped together and then back to me, and I watched his facade break. His shoulders slumped, and his face fell. I watched his eyes take on this haunted look. โNot great.โ
โTalk to me.โ I stepped closer and wrapped my arm around his, leaning against his shoulder. I didnโt even think of it, but I also did this with my dad, with Ronnie. I could hear Rowan draw in a breath and then let it out slowly.
โI failed them. They are dead because I havenโt figured everything out yet, and telling everyone today that everyone they love is completely goneโฆโ I heard him swallow. โI just failed them. And now I have to go on and face these people like this is completely normal.โ
I tightened my arms around his. โIn our world, it is.โ I looked up at him, and I swore I could see tears fighting to spill over, but in one blink, they were gone. โYou havenโt failed anyone. You were handed a tangled mess when you were a child, and you have been stuck trying to figure it out since then. I know today was hard, but no one can accuse you of not understanding what they feel.โ He looked at me. โThis mess started with you losing not just your family, but your entire race. No one has lost more than you. You havenโt failed. And I wonโt let you.โ
