Chapter 260
The world stopped for a minute, and then my wolves were lunging for each other. I slipped on the tub, slicing my leg as I struggled to reach for them. I turned inwards, sending myself into my mind, chasing after my wolves.
โStop,โ I called as I reached the barrier, but they were fighting each other, and they were vicious. I pushed through the separation and ran to my clearing, diving between the two, earning myself a few bites in the process before they realized I was there. โI said stop!โ I screamed as both latched onto me, and then jumped back.
โAmy!โ both of them called as they realized, and I dropped to my knees. Blood poured from my shoulder and my hip where they bit. Nix circled. โYou are so fricken stupid.โ She licked the wound at my shoulder, the one higher up where she got me. The blood slowed and Megan stepped up, cleaning the wound on my hip.
โIโm sorry I didnโt notice you jumped in,โ Megan said, going back to cleaning the wound.
โDonโt apologize,โ Nix hissed. โShe knows better than to jump between two fighting wolves.โ
The venom in her voice was thick. I pushed her away and stared at her. โAnd you should know better than to attack Megan when she was just telling me the truth.โ I watched her recoil a bit. The anger in her eyes surged, and she gave a half-hearted growl. I just stared at her. โYou can be angry at me. I donโt mind. You were right. But I expect you to also recognize your own shortcomings, including the blind spot you have for Erubus. You can be angry at me, at yourself, even at Megan for being able to not act like a jackass like we were. But youโre not allowed to attack her for voicing her opinion. That isnโt allowed, not only because youโre bigger, but because you are her alpha, and she did nothing wrong. Are we just like Vince now? Throwing our position and power around for no reason other than we can?โ
She sat back on her haunches. โYouโre mad.โ
Megan sat next to me and I stroked her fur. I shook my head. โIโm not mad. Iโm disappointed.โ
She fell back and looked at me with hurt in her eyes. โDisappointedโฆ in me.โ
I shook my head again. โIโm disappointed in us.โ I struggled to my feet. โWe are supposed to be one unit, working together for a goal. But these past few months we have all been working separately. I was trying to train, go to class, learning how to hack, while you two were off fighting magic you couldnโt handle alone. And then we were forced into a heat, and instead of working together, we separated once again. Megan was forced to handle the two of us. She was the only one that kept her head.โ I turned to her. โWaitโฆ how did you keep your head?โ
โBecauseโฆ Iโm the only one of us that actually went through a full heat before. It gets easier the more you have.โ
I tilted my head. โI never had a heat in my last life.โ
Megan laid down, and Nix inched closer. โActually, you did.โ I looked over at Nix, who was staring down at Megan. โIn our last life, I agreed to mate Brandon, but he wasnโt my mate."
โI know.โ
She looked away. โNo, what Iโm saying is because he wasnโt my mate, he never pushed me into a heat. But Megan here, she did go through them.โ
โThem?โ
But Nix pushed on. โBecause you didnโt know Megan even existed, you were kept separated. Her soul never directly touched yours. So during your last life, when you never went into heat, and Brandon was upset, saying you were defective like Shannon said, that wasnโt true at all. Itโs just Megan went deep into the forest to suffer alone while I enforced the separation."
โWhy?โ I turned to Megan. โYou didnโt need to suffer alone.โ
โI did.โ Megan looked up at me with eyes filled with tears. โA human isnโt meant to go through a heat. You can overheat, and that can hurt your organs.โ
โBut Iโm a werewolf.โ She shook her head and looked at Nix.
โOur last life, you never shifted. Your body was strong, but not werewolf strong. We lent you our strength, but your body was actually still very fragile. You just never noticed the difference because you were never in an actual fight.โ
โSo you couldnโt share the heat with me because you were afraid I was going to die?โ The two nodded. I dropped down next to her. โI am so sorry you had to go through a heat without me.โ Nix snorted and Megan met my eyes and then looked away.
โOne?โ Nix chuckled. โNo, Amy.โ
I looked at her and then back at Megan. โIf it wasnโt one, how many was it?โ She just shook her head. โHow many, Megan?โ
โPlease.โ
โMegan! Tell me.โ
She looked at me with a sad face. โSeventy-two before we finally fell pregnant.โ
