Chapter 320

Rowan snarled, but Toya wasnโ€™t done. โ€œYou and her father created this pit of a plan because youโ€™re older, you know better. But you miscalculated.โ€

โ€œWe are older, and we do know better,โ€ he countered. โ€œSo please, tell me, how did we miscalculate?โ€

Toya narrowed her eyes. โ€œYou held back because your wolf was infatuated with another, but my bet is that Erubus wanted Nix. You had Amy, and he could have had Nix, and you whiffed it.โ€ Toya snarled. โ€œYou held yourself back from the one person you truly wanted because of a wolf who was the same person. If you had less restraint, you and Amy could have been mated by now.โ€ His face fell, and he shot me a look. โ€œNow youโ€™re mated to a bitch who is controlling you, and Amyโ€ฆโ€ Toya looked at me. โ€œAmy deserves better. She deserves someone who will choose herโ€ฆevery time.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s enough,โ€ I whispered, but both turned to me. โ€œRowan, I think itโ€™s time for you to leave. Your fiancรฉe is probably waiting for you.โ€ I turned to Toya and just shook my head. โ€œIโ€™m going to pack the rest of my stuff.โ€

โ€œAmyโ€ฆโ€ Rowan grabbed for my hand, but I stepped back.

โ€œWhen you go downstairs, can you act arrogantly? I really need this to work.โ€ I nodded to him once and turned away.

Toya scoffed. โ€œHe doesnโ€™t have to act.โ€ I heard her walk to the door. โ€œMy king.โ€ She opened the door and stood there. I could feel Rowanโ€™s eyes on my back as I turned into my room. I went to my bags and pulled them to the door. I would stay back here until I was sure he was gone. โ€œMy king?โ€ Toya called again, only this time it was a little more forceful.

There were footsteps down the hall, and I walked into my bathroom as my bedroom door swung open. โ€œAmy?โ€ Rowan was panting, eyes wild.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. โ€œYes?โ€ I turned to see him filling the doorway.

โ€œI know I have no right to ask this of you.โ€ He took a step closer to me. โ€œBut pleaseโ€ฆdonโ€™t make any lasting decisions until this is all over.โ€

I looked at him. โ€œRowan, please just go back to your fiancรฉe.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t give a fuck about her. Just promise me.โ€ He stared at me with eyes full of something I couldnโ€™t decipher.

โ€œFine.โ€ I turned back to my shower, pulling my toiletries. โ€œNow go.โ€

I heard him inhale, and then he was gone. The front door slammed, and then Toya was in the doorway. โ€œHeโ€™s gone.โ€ I nodded. โ€œAre you okay?โ€ Her words were soft, and I laughed, but the tears came too.

โ€œIโ€™m stupid,โ€ I swatted at the tears that were betraying me.

Toya walked closer and wrapped me in her arms. โ€œAbsolutely not.โ€ She patted my back as I tried to pull back the tears.

I pulled back and laughed. โ€œAll he does is hurt me.โ€ I smacked my head. โ€œAnd I still cry over him.โ€ My hand rubbed my chest. โ€œI am stupid.โ€

โ€œHonestly, this is better than what you have been doing this last year.โ€ Toya wiped my tears. โ€œIโ€™d rather you facing your emotions than bottling them up and pretending you donโ€™t feel them.โ€ She smiled, and she pressed her forehead against mine. โ€œThis is the real you.โ€ She pulled back and stared into my eyes. โ€œWhat you were before. The cold, calculating woman, while she was a badass, she was also fake.โ€

I pulled back and wiped my face on my shirt. โ€œI thought I was pulling it off.โ€ I chuckled.

She joined me. โ€œYou did, and the rest of us played along. But we were just waiting.โ€

โ€œWaiting?โ€

She ran her hand down my hair. โ€œFor you to break.โ€ She tugged at the ends. โ€œYou held on for longer than I thought you would. But you canโ€™t keep running from thisโ€ฆfrom him.โ€ She sighed. โ€œYou both need to face each other. And you both need to be honest with each other and yourselves.โ€

โ€œHe is engaged,โ€ I started, and she scoffed.

โ€œItโ€™s obvious itโ€™s a part of your fatherโ€™s plan. I like him, but the man is stupid. Both of them.โ€ She shook her head, sending her braids flying.

โ€œDo you really hate him?โ€ I pushed out of her arms and settled against the counter.

Toya sighed. โ€œNot really. I hate how he treats you. I hate how their plans leave you like this. But I donโ€™t hate him, not really.โ€ She leaned against the wall across from me. โ€œI want to hate him because of what heโ€™s done to you. Butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHeโ€™s our king,โ€ I finished.

She shook her head. โ€œIf it was just that, I would hate him. There arenโ€™t really many monarchs that are liked in history. But heโ€™s honestly a nice guy, and heโ€™s smart. Heโ€™s just.โ€ She trailed off.

โ€œStupid,โ€ she blurted out.

โ€œStupid.โ€ I sighed and froze. Then we burst out laughing.
