Chapter 320
Rowan snarled, but Toya wasnโt done. โYou and her father created this pit of a plan because youโre older, you know better. But you miscalculated.โ
โWe are older, and we do know better,โ he countered. โSo please, tell me, how did we miscalculate?โ
Toya narrowed her eyes. โYou held back because your wolf was infatuated with another, but my bet is that Erubus wanted Nix. You had Amy, and he could have had Nix, and you whiffed it.โ Toya snarled. โYou held yourself back from the one person you truly wanted because of a wolf who was the same person. If you had less restraint, you and Amy could have been mated by now.โ His face fell, and he shot me a look. โNow youโre mated to a bitch who is controlling you, and Amyโฆโ Toya looked at me. โAmy deserves better. She deserves someone who will choose herโฆevery time.โ
โThatโs enough,โ I whispered, but both turned to me. โRowan, I think itโs time for you to leave. Your fiancรฉe is probably waiting for you.โ I turned to Toya and just shook my head. โIโm going to pack the rest of my stuff.โ
โAmyโฆโ Rowan grabbed for my hand, but I stepped back.
โWhen you go downstairs, can you act arrogantly? I really need this to work.โ I nodded to him once and turned away.
Toya scoffed. โHe doesnโt have to act.โ I heard her walk to the door. โMy king.โ She opened the door and stood there. I could feel Rowanโs eyes on my back as I turned into my room. I went to my bags and pulled them to the door. I would stay back here until I was sure he was gone. โMy king?โ Toya called again, only this time it was a little more forceful.
There were footsteps down the hall, and I walked into my bathroom as my bedroom door swung open. โAmy?โ Rowan was panting, eyes wild.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. โYes?โ I turned to see him filling the doorway.
โI know I have no right to ask this of you.โ He took a step closer to me. โBut pleaseโฆdonโt make any lasting decisions until this is all over.โ
I looked at him. โRowan, please just go back to your fiancรฉe.โ
โI donโt give a fuck about her. Just promise me.โ He stared at me with eyes full of something I couldnโt decipher.
โFine.โ I turned back to my shower, pulling my toiletries. โNow go.โ
I heard him inhale, and then he was gone. The front door slammed, and then Toya was in the doorway. โHeโs gone.โ I nodded. โAre you okay?โ Her words were soft, and I laughed, but the tears came too.
โIโm stupid,โ I swatted at the tears that were betraying me.
Toya walked closer and wrapped me in her arms. โAbsolutely not.โ She patted my back as I tried to pull back the tears.
I pulled back and laughed. โAll he does is hurt me.โ I smacked my head. โAnd I still cry over him.โ My hand rubbed my chest. โI am stupid.โ
โHonestly, this is better than what you have been doing this last year.โ Toya wiped my tears. โIโd rather you facing your emotions than bottling them up and pretending you donโt feel them.โ She smiled, and she pressed her forehead against mine. โThis is the real you.โ She pulled back and stared into my eyes. โWhat you were before. The cold, calculating woman, while she was a badass, she was also fake.โ
I pulled back and wiped my face on my shirt. โI thought I was pulling it off.โ I chuckled.
She joined me. โYou did, and the rest of us played along. But we were just waiting.โ
โWaiting?โ
She ran her hand down my hair. โFor you to break.โ She tugged at the ends. โYou held on for longer than I thought you would. But you canโt keep running from thisโฆfrom him.โ She sighed. โYou both need to face each other. And you both need to be honest with each other and yourselves.โ
โHe is engaged,โ I started, and she scoffed.
โItโs obvious itโs a part of your fatherโs plan. I like him, but the man is stupid. Both of them.โ She shook her head, sending her braids flying.
โDo you really hate him?โ I pushed out of her arms and settled against the counter.
Toya sighed. โNot really. I hate how he treats you. I hate how their plans leave you like this. But I donโt hate him, not really.โ She leaned against the wall across from me. โI want to hate him because of what heโs done to you. Butโฆโ
โHeโs our king,โ I finished.
She shook her head. โIf it was just that, I would hate him. There arenโt really many monarchs that are liked in history. But heโs honestly a nice guy, and heโs smart. Heโs just.โ She trailed off.
โStupid,โ she blurted out.
โStupid.โ I sighed and froze. Then we burst out laughing.
