Chapter 325

The door swung open and there wasโ€ฆ nothing.

โ€œWhat are you doing in there?โ€ My mom came up behind me, standing at the doorway.

โ€œWhy is this here?โ€ I spun in a circle, seeing an almost identical room from the cabin.

โ€œItโ€™s for seasonal storage. When we moved in with Morgan and Shannon, this was her closet. This entire room. Morgan wanted to put you in the guest room, but I knew this was your room. I told him you had to have this room or I would stay with you in the guest room. He cleared it out for you next day.โ€

I turned to face her. โ€œI donโ€™t remember that.โ€

My mom laughed. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t think you would. You were a baby.โ€ She leaned in and kissed my forehead. โ€œSo now itโ€™s your turn to answer my question. Why are you in here?โ€

I huffed out a breath and pointed towards the room. She turned and headed back to my bed, and I left the small hidden door open. I followed and leaned against the door frame. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œYesterdayโ€ฆโ€ I swallowed. โ€œThe call. It was Carly.โ€ My mother gasped, and I nodded. โ€œCarl was fighting off rogues. Before he went out, he told her to call me, Mom.โ€ I walked closer and sat next to her on my bed. I grabbed her trembling hands and squeezed. โ€œWhen we got there, he was already too far gone. We fought the rest of the rogues and burned their bodies, but Carlโ€ฆ He didnโ€™t make it.โ€ My mother covered her face and started to cry. โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

My mother dropped her hands and sniffled. โ€œItโ€™s not your fault, baby. We knew this day would come. He was just a close friend.โ€ She wiped her tear-streaked face. โ€œHowโ€™s Carly?โ€

I blew out a breath. โ€œAs good as can be expected. I buried him under a tree so she can go see him every day. And I promised to bring him back for her big moments.โ€

โ€œHe had been preparing for last night,โ€ Toya said, picking at my blanket. โ€œHe had clothes for all of us. We each had a room. Letters. It was impressive.โ€

My mom laughed through her tears. โ€œHe was an impressive man, through and through. He was very prepared. He said being prepared for everything made his gift a lot easier to process.โ€ I nodded.

I looked back to the closet and the door there, and it reminded me of the letter Carl had left me taped on the door. I brought it to the apartment and stuffed it into my bag after I shifted back. I stood and walked to the bag that held my laptop and pulled it out.

โ€œWhatโ€™s that?โ€ Toya leaned closer as I sat back down.

โ€œA letter from Carl. He had it taped inside the door in my closet at the cabin.โ€

โ€œThe door?โ€ My mom asked, and I pointed to the door in the closet.

โ€œHe built a room like that. Itโ€™sโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWeird,โ€ Toya finished.

โ€œConfusing,โ€ I countered. She smiled at me but shook her head. I opened the letter to see his scrawling handwriting.

โ€œWhat does it say?โ€ My mother looked over my shoulder, but I pulled back as I got up. I handed it to her as I made my way back to my bag and grabbed my Book of Shadows.

โ€œYou need the rock?โ€ Toyaโ€™s eyebrows rose.

โ€œItโ€™s my Book of Shadows.โ€

โ€œHer magic book. Itโ€™s concealed as a rock.โ€ Toya waved her hand and I laughed. โ€œLook, itโ€™s weird as fuck seeing you read a rock, even knowing what it is.โ€ Toya leaned back against the headboard. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t change from a rock to a book unless you hold it,โ€ Toya finished.

My mom turned back to the letter as I started flipping through the pages, looking for what I needed. My mom gasped, and I just nodded. โ€œClever man,โ€ my mom whispered, and Toya pushed off the headboard and crawled over the bed to us. She started reading the letter over my motherโ€™s shoulder.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Toyaโ€™s eyes darted over the letter and then snapped up to the doorway. โ€œYou have got to be kiddingโ€ฆ you can do that?โ€

I looked up from my book to see them both staring at me expectantly. โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ Toya pointed at the book in my hands and then back to my face.

โ€œWell, hurry, man.โ€ She jumped up. โ€œThat would be so fricken helpful.โ€ She looked around the bags, hers and mine. โ€œWe could bring everything in seconds.โ€ She spun back to me. โ€œWhat do we need to get?โ€

I looked back to the book. โ€œI donโ€™t know yet. I havenโ€™t found it.โ€

Toya sighed as she laid back down on my bed. โ€œI-โ€ There was a knock on the door and all of us turned towards it.
