Chapter 345

I smiled down at her. โ€œNot yet. I still have to go shopping, but I promise, Iโ€™ll be back soon.โ€ I pointed down the hall. โ€œSomeone came to visit you.โ€ My momโ€™s eyes were full of tears, but she managed a smile.

โ€œHey Carly.โ€ She crouched down. โ€œDo you remember me?โ€

Carlyโ€™s eyes lit up, and she ran down the hall. โ€œMy daddy called you our Luna!โ€ She ran into her arms. โ€œBut he also said you were his first pup.โ€ Carly pulled back a little. โ€œDoes that mean youโ€™re my sister?โ€

My mom laughed, but I could hear her pain. Carlyโ€™s words sank in. Carl loved my mom like a pup, and looking at my mother, she loved him like a father. A fresh pain crept into my chest. My mom looked up at me. โ€œAnother time, baby.โ€ I just nodded. She turned back to Carly. โ€œHow about you think of me like a grandma?โ€

Carlyโ€™s eyes grew wide, and she looked back at me. โ€œI never had a grandma before.โ€ I smiled.

โ€œItโ€™s up to you, sweet pea. Like I said last night, you get to decide what you call us.โ€

She nodded and turned back to my mom. โ€œIโ€™d really like a grandma.โ€

My mom fought her tears and smiled widely. โ€œI would really like a granddaughter.โ€ Carly dove back into her arms.

She pulled back and snagged her hand. โ€œCome look at my room, grandma. Amy gave me all my daddyโ€™s stuff, so I put it all in here.โ€ Carly tugged her across the hall and into her room. My mom followed, laughing.

I turned back to Lynn. โ€œYes, to answer your question. Carly is the shaman. A shaman that is six years old.โ€

โ€œAlmost seven,โ€ she called from her room.

I laughed. โ€œMy mistake. Almost seven-year-old girl whose father I adopted just passed away.โ€ Lynn stared at me for a minute.

โ€œYou have a lot on your plate.โ€ I just nodded. โ€œToo much. Iโ€™ll leave.โ€ She pulled away from me and tried to head down the stairs.

โ€œYou are too far away from my fatherโ€™s pack lands to go home.โ€ I omitted the cave portal. โ€œYou could go back through the closet, but you would be in the same place as before.โ€ She stopped, and I could see her shaking. โ€œYou are not now, nor will you ever be, a burden to me.โ€ She looked at me over her shoulder. โ€œYou are my friend, my pack, and I will keep you safe.โ€ I met her eyes with my defiant ones. โ€œI wonโ€™t make you stay here if you donโ€™t want to, but I really hope you will. I will help you train. I will help you gain your strength.โ€

Toya came over next to me, and Wendy stepped out of her room. Toya gestured to her and Wendy. โ€œWe will help you.โ€

Wendy stepped closer. โ€œPlease donโ€™t leave. I know we just met, and I know you donโ€™t really feel safe in your own skin. But allow us a chance.โ€

Lynn looked away. โ€œI would be useless.โ€

I shook my head. โ€œNot useless.โ€ I stepped closer to her. โ€œNever useless, never a burden.โ€ I raised my hand and cupped her face. โ€œPlus, I have so much to tell you.โ€

โ€œAbout what?โ€

โ€œEverything,โ€ I whispered.

Toya came up behind me. โ€œWe had to keep you in the dark because of where you were, but now, now you can learn the truth.โ€

Her lip trembled. I could see she was almost ready to agree. But she shook her head. โ€œI canโ€™t do that to you.โ€

Tiny footsteps came behind us again. โ€œYou are wounded, warrior. You are lost.โ€ Carlyโ€™s voice took on a deeper inflection. Everyone slowly turned to see her white eyes staring back at us. โ€œIf you leave, you jeopardize everything, including your life. If he catches you again, and he will look, you will lose everything.โ€ Lynn shuddered.

โ€œNo.โ€ She shook her head, and a tear slipped out.

Carly stepped forward. My skin prickled with the magic surrounding her. โ€œYou want to run because he made you believe you are not worthy of love, of care, but that is far from the truth.โ€ She raised her hand slowly and gently took Lynnโ€™s. โ€œLet his words fade from your mind. Let the three spirited one in. You will find your peace once again.โ€

Lynn trembled as she stared down at the little girl in front of her. โ€œWho are you?โ€ The words were whispered but held so much wonder.

โ€œYou know what I am, warrior. But I do not think you know what I do. I am a vessel.โ€ Carly looked up. โ€œA vessel for the future, the present, the past. I see all, and I weigh paths. I am the truth bearer, the pathfinder, I am the alpha, the omega, I am the storyteller. I am everything and nothing.โ€ Carlyโ€™s voice changed a little, and her eyes shifted to darkness. โ€œI am the goddessโ€™s voice, and her will on earth.โ€
