Chapter 358

I was digging into my second sandwich when there was a soft knock on the door. I looked up to see Alannah staring down at the floor. โ€œAlpha Amy?โ€ I put my sandwich down and smiled.

โ€œAlannah, please, I am serious. You can just call me Amy.โ€

She shook her head. โ€œAlpha Vince likes the distinction.โ€

I sighed. โ€œOkay. What can I do for you, Alannah?โ€

She bowed again. โ€œAlpha Brandon is here to take you to lunchโ€ฆโ€ Her eyes flashed in terror as she looked at the food on my table.

โ€œSend him in.โ€

Brandon came in a few seconds later but stopped short. โ€œOhโ€ฆโ€ He looked back, and I heard Alannah running back to her desk. โ€œI didnโ€™t realize you were already eating. I wanted to take you out for lunch on your first day.โ€

I smiled and winked. โ€œIโ€™ll have to reschedule. Maybe we can go tomorrow. Today, I have a date.โ€ I rubbed my hands together and checked the time.

Brandon furrowed his brow and walked over, sitting down. โ€œA date? With who?โ€

I looked up, surprised to hear the jealousy in his voice. โ€œWith Rick.โ€

Brandonโ€™s mouth fell open. โ€œYou have a dateโ€ฆ with Rick? Old man Rick? Seriously?โ€

I laughed. I laughed so hard tears fell from my eyes. โ€œWait.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t see whatโ€™s so funny.โ€ He started to pout.

I laughed harder. โ€œWait. Wait. Wait.โ€ I wiped my eyes and then heaved a deep sigh, trying to catch my breath. Brandon growled. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, itโ€™s not what I meant.โ€ I wiped my face again. โ€œItโ€™s not a date, date.โ€ He finally stopped pouting.

โ€œWhat do you mean, then?โ€

I smiled. โ€œRick wants to test me. Heโ€™s currently finding a spot to hide a bit of code in the mainframe, and I have to find it and try my best to eradicate the hidden code.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ Brandon looked out the door. โ€œLike a test?โ€

I nodded. โ€œExactly. Heโ€™s testing me and seeing how good my abilities are. Thatโ€™s why we had lunch a little early. While I finished eating, he laid his code, and once the time limit is through, I can start hunting.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re excited about thisโ€ฆโ€ Brandon looked at me, confused.

I nodded, excited. โ€œI am. I have a friend that I play around like this with. They have honestly helped me so much in finding hidden code, and I am super excited to give Rick a run for his money.โ€

โ€œA friend?โ€

I nodded, then lied. โ€œA girl who is human.โ€ I watched his eyes widen. โ€œWe met online, and she helped me with my course work since she went through the same course years ago. Like a mentor.โ€

Brandonโ€™s mouth was hanging open. โ€œYouโ€™re friends with a human woman?โ€

I shrugged. โ€œSorta.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s crazy. What do you guys talk about?โ€

I chuckled. โ€œServer maintenance. Website design. She helped me set up my business in my first year.โ€

Brandon leaned in. โ€œA business?โ€

Nix and Megan rolled their eyes.

This whelp of a man is so predictable. Nix shook her head.

I know. Say a friend, he thinks man. Megan chuffed. Say human and he loses his mind.

Say business and he zeroโ€™s in. Predictable. I tossed back.

Nix whipped her tail across the ground. But we donโ€™t actually know anything about Thoth.

True. I focused back on Brandon. But he needed to think Thoth was a woman, otherwise he would make my life even more difficult. Both my wolves nodded and turned away.

I nodded to Brandon. โ€œYeah, I help humans build websites for their businesses. Itโ€™s a fun little side job.โ€

โ€œHow much money do you make?โ€

I thought about it. โ€œI think last year I made a couple hundredโ€ฆ five hundred thousand dollars is not really chump change,โ€ I laughed. โ€œIt was a nice little boost into my investment portfolio.โ€

โ€œYou made five hundred thousand dollars from your side business?โ€ His words were soft.

โ€œUh huh.โ€ I bit the side of my cheek to stop the smile. โ€œYeah. It helped build up my portfolio for school, so the money wasnโ€™t really my goal. I needed a better portfolio for my finals.โ€ I shrugged and pulled up a program on the computer. โ€œI just took the money and invested it. I donโ€™t even know what my investments are at.โ€

There was a knock on my door, and we both turned. Rick opened the door, and his smile faltered when he saw Brandon. โ€œIโ€™m ready whenever you are, Amy.โ€

โ€œAwesome. Iโ€™m just going to finish my sandwich and then Iโ€™ll start.โ€ I saw Rick vibrating with excitement. I laughed and glanced at Brandon. โ€œI should be less than fifteen minutes.โ€ Rick nodded and knocked again before he left.

Brandon turned back. โ€œHe is actually excited by this?โ€

I nodded. โ€œI am too.โ€ I grabbed my sandwich and took a bite.

Brandon sat back and watched for a few minutes, but I busied myself with my food. โ€œTomorrow then, keep your lunch open, okay?โ€

โ€œWill do.โ€ I smiled up at him and then turned back to my computer. He stood and then, with another look, he turned and walked out of the office. As soon as he was gone, I hopped up and ran to the door. โ€œAlannah.โ€ She looked up. โ€œTell Rick itโ€™s on.โ€ I winked at her, earning a soft smile, and then I ran back to my computer.
