Listen to this chapter:

I was deep into programming a new firewall when there was a tentative knock on my door. I looked up to find Alannah standing there, looking a little lost. โ€œAre you busy, Amy?โ€

โ€œFor you? Not at all.โ€ I saved my progress and sat back. โ€œWhatโ€™s up?โ€

She stepped into the office. โ€œThere is someone that wants to come talk to you, but I donโ€™t want him to.โ€

I lifted my brows. โ€œWhy not?โ€

She looked down. โ€œItโ€™s Ternen.โ€

I smiled. โ€œSend him in.โ€ I leaned my elbow on the desk. โ€œI wanted to ask about his day yesterday.โ€

โ€œWhat, why?โ€ Her head snapped up.

โ€œBecause Brandon said he was going to give him a new job in the house. I wanted to see how it went.โ€ I watched her body tense and her face fall. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

She shook her head. โ€œItโ€™s nothing.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I had a sinking feeling. I stood and walked around my desk, grabbing her hand and pulling her to sit. โ€œSit.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€ She turned to look at the door. โ€œTernen is waiting.โ€ I pushed her into the chair and walked to the door, opening it.

Ternen stood with his back to me. โ€œTernen, come here.โ€ He turned, and I saw his face was still mottledโ€”green, yellow, and light purple. โ€œWhat theโ€ฆโ€ I held up my hand and waved him off. โ€œJust come here.โ€ I opened the door and allowed him in. Then I went to grab Rick. โ€œHey. Are you ready?โ€ His eyes held a bit of confusion, but he nodded.

He slid his chair back and nodded. โ€œOf course.โ€ I went back to the office with him, his eyes landing on Ternen and Alannah. I felt him stiffen, but he didnโ€™t react past that. โ€œHey guys. Howโ€™s everything?โ€

Ternen and Alannah just smiled. โ€œItโ€™s okay.โ€ His voice was softer than normal. Rougher. Like he screamed for too long. I felt my anger spike, but I pushed it down.

โ€œSince everyone is finally here, letโ€™s go to lunch.โ€ I smiled as I grabbed my bag. Alannah and Ternen looked confused, but Rick nodded.

โ€œSounds great. The reservation is in thirty minutes.โ€ Rick, the genius of a man, played along. He patted his pockets and nodded. โ€œIโ€™m ready.โ€ He walked to the door, then turned back. โ€œAmy, can you drive today? My mate has our car.โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€ I smiled widely and grabbed Alannahโ€™s hand, โ€œItโ€™s birthday lunch!โ€ I bounced, forcing myself to be upbeat as Ternen did his best to hide his face. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€ We walked to the door of the main office, but it swung open before Rick got there.

Brandon stood there, almost panting. โ€œHey.โ€ He smiled widely, but it never reached his eyes.

โ€œHey, baby.โ€ I let go of Alannahโ€™s hand and walked up to him, giving him a hug, earning a growl from Megan. Sorry, I sent back to my wolf. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

โ€œI came here to take you to lunch.โ€ He smiled down at me, but I pulled away.

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry. But I told you yesterday that Rick and I were taking Alannah out for lunch.โ€ I pouted as I stared up at him. And I had told him. I wasnโ€™t actually planning on going anywhere, but I just wanted space from him. Every day, he came to have lunch. I was tired of it, so I lied and said we planned on taking Alannah out for her birthday.

Brandon looked down. โ€œI must have forgotten.โ€ Then he snapped his head up and smiled. โ€œIโ€™ll just tag along.โ€

I dropped his hand and crossed my arms, pouting. โ€œIf you come, then everyone else wonโ€™t be able to relax.โ€ I looked at him through my lashes. โ€œI have lunch with you every day. You promised me I could go with my friends today.โ€ I sounded like a petulant child. But somehow, this is the only way I can get what I want from Brandon. He has to see me as a child, which, in all honesty, opened a new disgusting aspect to the man.

Itโ€™s because he is a fucking child. He doesnโ€™t understand adults talking shit through. Megan huffed as she retreated into the trees, leaving after one final crack at him. Heโ€™s just so fucking pathetic. I canโ€™t fucking look at him anymore.

โ€œYou donโ€™t want me to come with you?โ€ He tried to pout.

โ€œThatโ€™s not fair.โ€ I turned my back to him. โ€œI told you yesterday, the two omegas wonโ€™t feel comfortable around you.โ€ I turned and pointed. โ€œIt took Alannah four months to stop calling me alpha.โ€ Then I pushed tears into my eyes. โ€œYou promised.โ€

Brandon opened his mouth, but Shannon busted in the door. โ€œThere you are.โ€ She squealed and then froze when she saw me.

Brandon turned to face Shannon, and I could see the anger just below the surface. โ€œWhy are you here?โ€ His words were light, but I could see he was about to lose his mind.
